Well, there's not a whole lot of clutter to begin with, so I can't think of much to improve :) One thing maybe...a simple twisty tie to bunch all the wires in the back, away from view, of course.

:eek: so many responses, thank you.

i can't do much of wire control unless i go bt.
well, you asked for it :p

As you mentioned, you could go BT. You could also buy an Ikea Signum which would help you hide wires beneath the desk though those don't really show in the picture.

@slieu92 regarding improvement:

Give me your desk and speakers! Oh wait, you wanted to improve your setup? Don't bother, it looks great as it is.

Very cool setup. I like that artwork on your wall too - can we get another shot of that? (If that's allowed of course...since it technically would have nothing to do with a "Mac Setup")

sweet. thats a crazy network setup. is everything wired except for your MacBook Pro? who did you get to wire your house and was it expensive?

also what dual CPU mobo do you have in your Linux box next to your Mac Pro?

There's 17 network drops around the house; 10 of them are in the office. I think the electrician charged me around $1500 (I spent around $20,000 on electrical, so not sure what the breakdown was), but left the patch panel and ports up to me to sort out. I forget how much I spent on the wall plates.

In my mind, $1500 was worth it. The drywall was removed from most of the rooms, so there was very little snaking to do through existing walls.

It's all Cat-6. I think Cat-5 would have been a little cheaper, but I saw no reason to save a few bucks on that. In hindsight, I wish I had done more drops, but this is fine. I am very glad I had him put in a 60 amp sub-panel in the office with 7 circuits out of it. There's 3 AirPort Expresses around the house for wireless + AirTunes.

Motherboard: I'm using ASUS server boards these days. They're relatively cheap, have serial console and PXE support, dual GigEs, take 8 GB of DDR2-800 RAM. The ~$300 boards support ESX 3.5, which is important for me. On non-ESX systems, I am just using the $150 low end boards. That particular machine is a 2.66 Xeon. The cheap litttle shuttles in the closet are lame ECS consumer boards, but they were also extremely cheap ($200 for the entire system).

^ thanks. im considering wiring my future house. id probably have 2 wall ports (one for desktop and the other for living room) and use Cat-5e cables with a hub, wireless and a file server in the closet. seems expensive though!

I would not have done it if I hadn't gutted so much of the place to the studs, moved walls, new ceilings in places, etc. I am very glad that I did do it though, even in the age of wireless--I want faster transfers than Wifi offers and by having Ethernet by, say, the TV, I don't have to deal with wondering why the Wii's wifi wouldn't connect to the AirPort on the first try.
