Just got my Mac Pro on Tuesday and set it up in my dorm on the small-ass desk provided by the school:
Dual 2.8GHz, 6GB RAM, 8800GT card

That looks like a long fall for the Mac Pro if it gets bumped. I'd be a little more leery of putting such an investment in a precarious spot like that.

I would not have a Mac Pro so close to the edge like that

Anyroad. Altered my setup, iTunes 8 genius thingy is so great for me that (since I flick between XP and OSX on my iMac all the time) it's time to replace my iPod as the hifi and finally give the PowerBook a use.

And in the next few weeks this whole setup might be changed (24" iMac, 15" MBP, likely new amp/EQ, 1 monitor per system)

Good point. But to be honest, the photo is a little deceptive (perhaps it's the angle?) because there is a good few inches between the edge of the case and the edge of the desk. Also, like any smart college student would do, I locked my computer to the bed with a U-lock.

Edit: I measured the distance....four inches. But you guys are probably right, so I moved it further away from the edge.

Thanks for the advice

Okay, it's a good few inches. Think about it, how tall is that Mac Pro? You and I, very well know that others don't care about our gear like we do. I would put it against the wall.

Edit:
I find that it's pretty difficult to accidentally topple an almost 50 lb Mac Pro. They're pretty hard to tip over, even on whim.

There's allot of drinking in college.

I'm assuming they mean the side, not the front... the front looks pretty far back.

Yeah, the front was fine to start with, but I took the advice and moved it closer to my monitor.

Very funny, shfreelance. ;) Fortunately I don't have to worry about that in my current living situation.

Get an Airport Express to put in the closet and do wireless printing. Or if you run into a little $$, buy a time capsule to take care of both those needs (storage, wireless printing). That would eliminate the cables running in the doorway, which you may trip over at some point...
Just my 2c though

Also, get a cover plate for that outlet, dust is capable of starting fires in open outlet sockets.

Proof? Never heard of this in my life.

Well its not a formally documented problem but just in general, Dust + Spark = Flame, and an open receptacle will collect much more dust than one with a cover.

*I didn't mean to induce panic about anyone's outlets lol

It's best to use cover plates anyway, just for general safety, especially in a frequented area like the computer using two power strips.

Which means that

A: Dust has to build up IN the outlet
B: Have enough to become conductive.

Not true one bit, and has never happened to anyone in the world.
