That is because you are comparing to crappy monitors.
Grab a good ips screen and see the difference :)

I wouldn't call my cinema display 'crappy' by any stretch of the imagination but every man to his own.

I sold this LG monitor on to fund the cinema display & although that LG monitor was very nice & had all the checklist ticked when it came to fancy new technologies the amazing true to life colours, brightness & viewing angles I find in my cinema display blows that panel out of the water.

You misunderstood me =)
I wasn't talking about the cinema display crappy, but most of the "current" monitors out there (TN ones).
It's very strange that the cinema display is better than that LG, but if you say I will believe it =)

Whoops - my bad, I thought you were on about the Samsung & the cinema display. Took a couple of reads :p

I had a chance to work on both the original 23" Alum ACD and the much "modern" 24" ACD. And I can say I love the 23" than that 24" shiny glass panel. Though the 24" inch have better black generation, I think that the protective glass is faking it. For me anything matte is better than glossy.

100% agree. For me glossy displays, not only are they are nightmare to keep clean & are incredibly annoying when the light's on/sun's out - but the 'vivid' colour reproduction just seems over the top & cartoon'ish when compared to a matte display.

I have 13" Macbook with glossy screen and a powerbook 15" with a matte screen, put it side by side and compared. The 15" PB even if its an older screen and probably the technology is older, looks gorgeous and almost perfect in terms of color accuracy especially when it is properly calibrated, except the black of course. The blacks on the matte are not just deep because of the backlighting. But in terms with other color reproduction it is quite amazing considering the powerbook's age.

I used to have a white 13" MacBook & was disappointed with the display all round - regardless of matte vs glossy debate. I found the viewing angles & even the colour reproduction pretty shocking.

I agree the PowerBook's displays are pretty amazing, it's a different kind of 'wow' when looking at a matte display & a glossy display side by side. At first glance you'll take a second look at the glossy display because of it's more vibrant colours, deeper blacks etc. But then when you study them for any stretch of time you realise you don't actually want or need ridiculously bright colours - but the more 'earthy' palette that the mattes give.

I have to say though as much as I love the PowerBook's displays - the matte displays found in the early MacBook Pro's completely hands down demolish it.

Nice info about the early MBP's, but those have the problematic 8600 if I'm not mistaken?

Sorry for the picture of the powerbook, it doesn't do justice to its beauty. Lol.

I have a 1080p Packard Bell monitor that I picked up for €180 and it has the worst colour and angles I have seen on a monitor.

I have a 1680x1050 Samsung that i bought for €200 and it has good colour and viewing angles, but a hideous design.

The Old ass 23" apple cinema display I have cost around 2k at release but I picked it up today for €150 and it heavily outperforms both of those for less. I am sure there are other good monitors for a higher price point maybe 500+ but this apple monitor really beats anything in its current price range. :)

I've never used one of the later (late '07/08) MBP's with the 8600M GT's, only a couple of the earlier X1600 model. I'm assuming the displays were the same across the board until they switched over to the glossy/unibody design in 2008?

Agreed.

That's awesome. The last screenshot does not show the 23" ACD. If I'm not mistaken it is the 15" ACD that came with the cube?

You are indeed correct. For now, I cannot get anything in that PL Cube besides a Rage 128. The GeForce 3, GeForce MX2, GeForce MX3 will not work at all. They all freeze at different points when trying to load. For now, I'm happy I've gotten it to work. Supposedly the Sonnet's "cannot" boot into straight 9.x or anything below 10.2. As you will also see on that last screenshot Mac OS X 10.0 Public beta thinks my Sonnet chip is a G3 chip. I used a trick I figured out on which Sonnet patch to install to make it work. If anyone has any suggestions regrading the cards I'm all ears. I'd love to use my 23" ADC on that PL Cube. I've got a NIB 20" ADC I'm sure that would work too.

I can't understand why your sonnet 1.2GHz won't boot more than 10.2.
I have one (currently for sale) and even the installer of sonnet firmware is for 10.4/10.5 only.
As for the cards, I have no experience in os9 nor 10.0 public, but isn't that because of missing drivers?

I think I might not have explained well enough. The Sonnet 1.2Ghz is supposed to work for any OS from 10.2-10.5. I've read an article talking about how to patch an extension to get it to boot into straight 9.2.1, I did it a different way and it's much more stable. The issue is that since Sonnet didn't "supposedly" intend or support Mac OS 9.x or anything before Mac OS 10.2 so I don't know if I can use the 23" monitor. I've also had someone mention that until 10.2 the use of a 23" ADC wasn't possible. I haven't done my research on that yet. I do think it might be a driver issue but don't know what I would need to do in order to have the 23" ADC work with my PL Case Cube.

Interestingly enough when I used a Cube specific fan and connected into the Stratos VRM it only stayed powered on for a few seconds. I ended up tying it directly into the molex connections so it works as it should but also thought it was worth mentioning.

The 23" ones are really nice. :D Especially when paired with a ATI X850, fastest card that can natively drive them.

I loved mine so much that I went from a 22" to a 20", and then later another 23". The 20" sadly was rained on in a water incident recently :( But the 23" is still going strong with an ADC adaptor! Not sure about that adaptor though, it makes a high pitched whine that gets on my nerves when the monitor is sleeping.

Sometimes I get bored of it though - my first ADC monitor was back in 2001! Thing is I have no justification at all to replace it yet. The 24" 1920x1200 monitors are a step down and the 27" 2560x1440 ones just aren't enough of a step up for me.

*sigh* I guess I'll wait for a higher res screen ^^

My little Power Mac G5 nursing home I have set up in my room. The one on the right is a 2004 and lacks Ram and a Hard Drive.
The one on the left is in my signature and is powering the dual monitor setup quite well even with the puny little 6600LE :)

I have consolidated my PPC macs over the past few years. All I have left is a G5 Dual Core 2.3GHz. I just recently replaced the cooling on my 7800 GT with a Zalman VF900, the card idles around 103F. I decided to alter the cooling a little bit, I placed the G5 next my to AC vent, with the exhaust facing toward the AC with a 120mm USB powered fan blowing cool air near the exhaust to cool down the air. I also placed a 120mm fan in the front for better air flow. Overall, I am very happy with this setup. It runs 24/7 running my weather station, which transmits data to different outlets.

This week I've read about changing the cooling on the Mac 7800GT.
I had a VF900 on an 6800GT in PC Time, but for this one I found a cheap (13eur) new NV Silencer NV5 so guess it will do too.

First ever PowerBook G4 and last ever PowerBook G4 :D
