Another Powermac saved from the crusher...

Sorry in advance for the long winded post,
but always get a thrill out of rescuing old, unwanted treasures
and being able to give them a new lease on life...

A good friend of mine wanted to get rid of his old 2003 Dual 2.0Ghz Powermac and 23" Acrylic Cinema.
He said if I didn't want it, he was just going to throw everything away
since "it was too old and didn't work" anymore.

It all came with the original boxes/inserts for everything.
Everything was all pretty filthy (Dust, pet hair and unidentifiable food all over the keyboard,
inside of the Mac and the monitor).

The HDD/Superdrive were DOA and the fans were acting very wonky.
Not so bad...

I disassembled and cleaned all the components,
and gave the boards and connections a light bath and cleaning with de-oxit
and cleaned all the dust off everything.
Turns out dust is a pretty good preservative...because beneath all the filth was some very minty looking kit.

Brought the G5 in to my local authorized repair center to get the fans re-calibrated
which is required after cleaning and removing the CPU's.
He also replaced the superdrive with a used one that was laying around. (Total cost $110.00)

Had 8GB of old crucial ram and a spare 2TB Caviar HDD layin' around
layin' so I guess you could call those free at this point.
(The HD is partitioned 500GB/1.3TB)

Using the old girl as a music server and for misc backups networked to
a 2010 6-core MP workstation.

I'm sure the workflow on the MacPro will improve now that 4TB of external music files, Itunes,
the Apogee Duet and PureMusic software have been taken out the CPU /ram loop.

Everything on the G5 is working flawlessly including music, mail, internet
(was able to transfer all bookmarks/preferences from MP's FireFox over to the PPC Tenfourfox browser).
Been running it all weekend and she's running cool as cucumber...

:D:D:D

My dual 800mhz Quicksilver running under my Mac Pro.

My 733mhz Quicksilver running in my home server closet.

My PPC Setup

My main desktop is a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 867 Mhz with currently 640mb of ram and a radeon 9000. Also has a 250GB maxtor hard drive with Apple 17" studio display and original keyboard and mouse (I use a wireless logitech because I hate the original mouse). It's getting 1gb of ram and a usb 2.0 card soon!

My iMac G4. My first ever Mac and currently my last one too since it outlived all my intel Macs. Even today this beauty is great to write on, even though I didn't like the default keyboard or mouse much. Runs OS X 10.4 Tiger.

If I had the choice of rescuing my Gaming Rig or my G4 from a fire, I'd save the G4 straight away, no question.

Couldn't help but notice you're running iOX without the system icons (finder, trash, hdd's) - have you clicked the SYSTEM iContainer? ;)

Now that's a testimony to the PowerPC platform if I ever saw one.

I have to say, although the PowerPC platform is great, Intel has passed it since. The early Intel macs were sort of unstable and.. well just a pain, but as it seems Intel macs can hold up very well also! I have also seen many PowerPC macs die in their old age.

Current PowerPC -machine setup, altough the iBook is already sold waiting for shipping.

Some say that this PowerBook G4 model is the best since it is in compact 12" size and still has 1.5GHz processor. This is indeed very nice laptop (especially since I bought mine in very good condition) altough this is lacking the backlit keyboard, I've had 867Mhz 12" model before but I assumed that since this is later PB models this would have it.

Sadly there is no way you could get a backlit keyboard working on the 12 Powerbook. :(

PT1:
This is the first part of my collection, the G5 and Mac Pro are somewhere else.

Things changed at work a few months back, so here's the new setup. Ignore the Mac Pro and the two PCs.

Off to the left is the PowerMac G4/350 PCI and the G4/450 AGP. The 450 AGP is connected to the 350 PCI via Chicken of the VNC because I am running the 350 PCI headless (no video card).

The 350 PCI is our Applescript server and the 450 AGP is now a printserver and a backup to the G5 (mine) that my coworker is now using.

The laptop is my personal 17" PowerBook G4 1Ghz.

'Auto is NOT a color' - love it :p

Here's my very first PowerPC. May be first of many. I still want a Power Mac G4 but need to find somewhere to keep them. Dining room table will not cut it long term.
