unless I am not understanding - there was a "*", an emoji representation of a star in front of the title of this thread, as a leading character. it's gone now
Ah, excellent.

Very pleased to see that this has taken place.

Now, to my mind, gold stars do have their place (which, for me, usually occurred when an essay submitted in primary school had been returned by the teacher; naturally, at the time, I was delighted, but that was then, and this is now).

More to the point, I do not think that their place is to be found in a thread title.

Ah, thank you for this! Actually, yes, that really would not have belonged there, anyway, so it is good that presumably the OP or someone else removed it. An emoji?????!!!!! Why would anyone have even done that in the first place? Clearly that individual is not knowledgeable about some critical components when it comes to hierarchical structure online. For one thing it would've interrupted the normal structural sequence within MR of the POTD threads, and there really would be no valid reason for having done this/inserted the emoji in the first place.

Given the nature of this site, it isn't a surprise that many people who participate on MR are very literate when it comes to the whole underpinnings of computer language as well as what works on the internet/worldwide web or, more specifically, hierarchical structure of content within sites positioned on the internet......

But of course not all members of MR have the same level of experience, background, actual day-to-day basic and beyond basic computer knowledge.....and it is situations such as this when problems arise.

Anyway, I'm glad that this particular error and situation with a very popular thread on MR has been resolved!

Time to get back to the purpose of this thread, which is sharing images.....

Since we had an issue with AI usage and concerns recently, I propose y’all should consider the amended rules here. All POTD threads starting now will need to contain the updated second bullet point (see below 👇). Thank you.

Welcome to Photo of the Day. The POTD thread was started by iGary in May, 2006 and converted to a monthly thread in November 2007 by Arn. POTD is one of the most popular picture groups on MacRumors, often exceeding 500 posts and 20,000 views per month.
Photo of the Day is intended to be a showcase for your best pictures. There is no limit to your gear, just your imagination. P&S and film cameras are welcome along with DSLRs. There are no themes like the Weekly Contest, and no winners (or losers) either.
POTD Thread Policies

  • One Photo per Day - Don't post more than one photo each day. Diptychs, triptychs, etc. are OK.
  • All photos should be your own work and shouldn’t be AI generated.
  • Multi-Quote - To comment on several photos, click the "+ (Multi-Quote) button. This puts all your comments in one post. Multi-Quoting is required on all of the MacRumors forums.
  • Safe for Work (SFW) only - This is a site-wide rule. If you wouldn't show it in a public place, then it's NSFW (not safe for work). Think before you post.
  • Describe your photo - Tell what it is and where you took it. If you know the EXIF data of a photo, include it. The following EXIF fields are recommended: Camera, ISO, Focal Length, Shutter/Aperture and Lens.
  • Note: Anyone may start the Photo of the Day thread on the first of the month GMT. Please copy a quote of this post to maintain all the formatting.
  • Please don't alter or expand these policies - If you think they need improvement, use a separate thread to discuss.
  • Past POTD threads from August 2013 onwards can be seen here
  • Earlier POTD threads thru July 2013 can be seen here

The new language is wrong; it implies that people can post AI content with prior consent. I think we've agreed as a group that AI generated content is not appropriate for the POTD thread.

I also think (but would appreciate input from others) that we can strip out the "unless special circumstances have been agreed" altogether. Longer term members may recall that for a short period of time we had a poster who was wheelchair bound and had her companion help physically push the buttons on her camera/phone. She has not posted in a couple of years or more, so I think that part can be clawed back unless and until she or someone similar begins posting again. I think the shorter the rule the easier it is to understand.

In my opinion, the first line should state as follows:
All photos should be your own work. No AI generated images.

This makes it consistent with the weekly contest threads, where the language has already been updated.

With consensus, perhaps @oblomow can update the current POTD thread since he began it for September.

Oops, didn’t realize there was a difference between the contest and POTD threads! Left out too much of the original content.

I totally get that people might cheat on POTDs more often than on other threads where they’re posting AI-generated pics.

Thanks a bunch for building on my idea! The contest rules template on the Photo contest master list already has the NO AI rule.

Also, not at all meant to be snarky. But the entire point of the six pages of the AI thread was to come up with a consensus for how to handle this in the photography forum. It wasn't really your idea, it was actually started as a suggestion by Clix Pix. And then AI thread was started by me. It's kind of disengenous of you to come in to this thread and say that it was your idea to change the language. It was a deliberately collaborative discussion across the forum. It's been two weeks since the AI thread was started and people are still chiming in for the first time. It wouldn't be fair to change the rules without a decent discussion time. The challenge thread was a little more time sensitive since there's a "winner" and it was an issue in that area earlier.
