I think the point is that it should only use a tiny bit of power as it presumably keeps the processor at the lowest clock-speed, maybe forces the use of only one core, and since it requires an SSD there should be no significant heat, no need for fans etc., so power draw should be tiny.

The decision is whether you want to trade off a small amount of power drain for ensuring that syncing features continue. That said though I really don't see the usefulness if you're on the go, as you're unlikely to have access to Time Machine, and the last thing you want is your machine to be trying every nearby WiFi hotspot in an attempt to get online for e-mail etc.

Result is that this is most useful for a machine that's plugged in to charge at home, as you can save power without interrupting Time Machine backups, and when you re-open the machine it'll be up to date on e-mails etc.

Would be good for those macs with Mail configured to automatically SORT your mail -- IF it supports that while in PowerNap mode. For example -- I have Mail automatically sort incoming email from students, but it can only do this if my macbook is on and active. Otherwise my iPhone grabs the mail first and whatever it grabs gets sent to the Inbox on my mac (where I have to select the messages and run the Rules to get it all sorted... manually).

As for battery drain. It would drain as much (little more or less) as an iPad would when it's doing its thing. And what's the standby time on an iPad? Well MacBooks have bigger batteries, see.

How long till someone hacks the feature on to 3rd party SSDs?

EDIT: Nevermind. It'll never happen.

But where do you go for that? I don't see that I have any updates that I need to install in the Mac App Store..

No one knows when its going to be released, probably later today, but the Keynote had a disclaimer at the bottom saying a firmware update would enable the feature, just keep checking throughout the day.

Same deal with my new 2012 Air — waiting on a firmware update to enable the option in energy prefs.

Weird thing I'm waiting for the firmware update for the MBA 2010 but I am not so sure Apple will deliver.

A guy in another thread posted screenshots showing he has it on his late 2010 MBA.

Edit: check post #16 in a thread called "Power Nap?". I'd link you but I'm on tapatalk.

But doesn't it only work when you have have power plugged in?

You can choose if you want it to run while on battery power.

It appears to only work when connected to power. This is from my 2012 MBA.

EDIT>> Woops... I was wrong. It works on both battery and power, just with different features enabled. See this Apple KB.

I wonder if this will eat the battery when my mac is asleep?

I believe it's only active when the laptop is plugged in.

I can imagine it being a 2 tiered service though. While the laptop is plugged in it backs up and downloads updates. however if it's not, it just receives emails and notices. That's low level functions that iOS devices do while "off" and it barely touches their battery life.

I don't see this on the macbook retina? I guess there needs to be a firmware update released for it?

In your screenshots, why are the 2 options above the power nap option greyed out?

Because I have my system set to automatically lock system pref panes. If you click the lock at the bottom left then enter a password it will ungrey (<is that even a word?) and you can change the settings.

any more news on firmware upgrade for late 2010 MBA?

Can you guys update me on if there's more proof of the firmware upgrade on the late 2010 Air? I saw in an earlier post a guy had it, but still not completely positive?? Thanks!

I installed the MBA 2010 firmware update and it works very well with PowerNap.
