So Classic is semi-broken. Audio stutters, color artifacts in a different resolution. Perhaps if I can install OS 9 native. Separate partition or erase the OS 10 partition and then install OS 9, then 10 on top?

Yes, because the OS X partition will be unaffected if anything happens to it. Did you select Install Mac OS 9 drivers when setting up the HDD? (If you didn’t, 9 won’t see the partitions.)

Nothing. Now let me be clear: I mean splitting my OS X partition into 2: one for 9 and one for 10.4

I believe you can install Mac OS 9 after 10.4 is already installed, since they use different System folders and can live on the same drive at the same time. I don't think you have to install 10.4 again after 9 is installed in this case.

This is what I've done said. Take the 9.2.2 Universal image, boot into it, and run the installer in there and it should just work.
