[doublepost=1537643240][/doublepost]Have one question. A very typical scenario for me. My phone is laying on a desk, 20-30 cm from me. I press my finger to unlock it and see if I have messages. I do not take it. How do you do it with face id?
[doublepost=1537643319][/doublepost]You take Apple’s word as the Gospel?
Oh we know :p. Also as far as the phone on table question goes, it was one of my greatest worries and nobody ever seemed to address it but im not sure if this is one of the differences between the new FaceID and the older one on the X, but this one reads my face from the side. More so if I come at it diagonal. I was SHOCKED.

How about a case like this: Have one question. A very typical scenario for me. My phone is laying on a desk, 20-30 cm from me. I press my finger to unlock it and see if I have messages. I do not take it. How do you do it with face id?

I’m not sure if this thread is serious or not. Face ID information is not shared with Apple and I find Face ID to be faster and more reliable in a lot of situations. I’d suggest trying it out before thinking it can work for you. It’s already better than Touch ID and is just getting started.

Actual privacy experts tell people to tailor their security to their situation. OP, are you a dissident, on the run from any governments or criminal organizations, or a reporter trying to uncover state secrets? If not, you’re probably way overstating how important your data is to the NSA.

And if you are someone who has truly grave security concerns, why are you using a closed source device like an iPhone? If you believe Apple is willing to lie and upload your facial data to their servers and pass that along to the highest bidder, then you shouldn’t trust the iPhone for anything. Because if Apple is willing to do that, they’re willing to upload everything you do with the phone. They’re willing to take photos of you without you knowing. They would have all your usage and personal data and you’re already screwed.

Of course, I think the above scenario is absurd paranoia. Apple has built their brand in part on privacy, distinguishing themselves from Google and Microsoft and Facebook and most other tech companies who offer you everything for free so they can mine your data. If it were revealed that Apple has been lying this whole time, they’d take a hit to their bottom line far bigger than any payout they could get from selling user data.

This concern over FaceID is the tech version of making people take their shoes off at the airport. It’s security theater. You want to look more clever and security conscious than everyone else but you’re using flawed logic and not even following it through to its conclusion. If you’re truly that security conscious, the iPhone and any Apple product should be off the table for you. So spare us the conspiracy theory rantings please.

There are ways to make iPhones more secure than they are out of the box, but you still have to trust that Apple is honoring what it claims in order for that security to mean anything. If you don’t trust Apple, don’t use Apple products.

You have to rely on notifications in this situation. You can tap the screen to wake it up to see if there are new notifications. You can only unlock the phone by looking almost directly at it.

Oh OP is one of those. Why do U even own a smart phone? It’s a tracker right? They’re watching anyway

Tap the screen. It will show you if you have messages.

It will if you have notifications on. I have notifications off

How is it better for seeing if you have messages?

Well great, you willfully made your experience not fit your requirement and then complained about it.

You really believe it?

Do you really think Apple would risk compromising the privacy and security they have touted related to the Secure Enclave? They have an interest in protecting your privacy as well as protecting their proprietary technology behind FaceID. Storing sensitive data is a major liability and Apple knows it.

I could’ve used Face ID today. Got caught in rain so bad and couldn’t access my phone as fingers were not recognized. Wife was at an airport trying to make a decision and I couldn’t respond.

I work in a restaurant and there were many times I had to reply to the owner for things needed that day from the farmers market. I couldn’t reply right away because of course I had a 7+ and my fingers were wet so touchID didn’t take my fingerprint. That reason alone is why I love faceID.

I work in a company that uses customer data for many things and therefore I do not have social media and know that big companies can do everything

Here's the thing about the government getting a copy of your face. If you drive a car, they already have it! Check out your driver's license next time it's handy. There are traffic cameras all over where I live. They can get my face there as well. Best Buy, the grocery store, Target, Macy's, etc. all get footage of your face on their cameras as well. You put your face on display for the entire world every time you leave your house. And you're afraid your phone will see it?

I kinda wish these conspiracy theories had some truth to them. I'd love to see a secret agent make a 3d mask of my face to fool... Well, that's where my imagination runs dry. Other than unlocking my phone, I can't think of a single instance where mimicking my face buys someone anything at all. But it would be cool to see another me running around.

If the OP wants an XS/XS-Max and is worried about Face ID then that’s a problem. If he doesn’t trust Apple to do what it says it does in terms of the Face scan data never leaving the phone then, as already pointed out, disabling Face ID can’t be the solution because how could he possibly trust Apple to actually obey the disable switch and not carry on scanning his face and sending all the data back to Apple, NSA, aliens and the lizard people? He can’t but luckily I think I have a solution.

Why not wear a disguise whenever you use your new iPhone? If you have a local theatrical costumer anywhere nearby then a wig, false beard and false moustache should be fairly easy to keep in a bag with you at all times ready to put on whenever you need to look somewhere vaguely in the direction of your phone. When you’re not wearing the disguise though you must be very careful to keep your back to the phone at all times.

Thought I would miss TouchID. I was wrong. FaceID is awesome and “just works”.

Not thrilled with how they handle Apple Pay Transactions by having to confirm with a double tap but sure I will get used to it.

Data privacy and security is a legitimate concern. However, if you have this much concern, you should just use a dumb phone. Android wouldn’t be any better. Google lives for gathering and selling data. Get a nice flip phone and you should be okay.

Best of luck to you. The truth is out there.

OP: You do know Apple phones all have front facing cameras that could be filming you all the time you’re using your iPhone and sending the video and logs of what you were looking at to Apple for analysis.

My Apple Watch tells me if I have messages, but if I only had an iPhone, I’d keep it 20 cm closer to me on the desk, touch the screen, and look at it. Or I’d have it in its elevated charging cradle and do the same thing, touch the screen and look at it. That’s my desk set up at least. Hope that helps.

@Kulfon

Serious question: If you don't trust Apple... what makes you think they aren't taking your fingerprints, picture, location, browsing habits, etc. every time you use your phone? You're staring right at a camera all the time. If you think they are evil/bad actors, they they already have a pristine 3D replica of your face and record everything regardless of what you have set in preferences

I see people at work ALL the time with tape over the camera on their laptop, but not on their phone which they most certainly have with them in much more compromising locations. Also, I know people that won't use TouchID because they "don't want Apple to have their fingerprints". But yet they put their finger on the sensor every time they use the phone. It's irrational - they don't trust apple with their fingerprint, but they do trust apple not to use the sensor if asked not to.

Does everyone else walking around the street, sitting next to you, etc.? You know they are recording your MAC (Bluetooth and WiFi) and using everyone's camera along with facial recognition to build a database.... right? Also, I hope you don't use your phone for email or phone calls, because those can be easily recorded and sent for storage and analysis.

After a year of using the X, I forget what FaceID is doing as it has been and still is so automatic. My MAX seems to be the same so far. It just works.

I stayed on an 8 Plus (wanted the larger phone) and with the Max I have my first experience with FaceID. But with the first 24 hours my experience is the same: It just works!

In safari for passwords at least, faceid just scans automatically after you choose to use your saved password.

I will say, faceID seems to be a LOT more reliable and easier to forget about than touchID. I wasn’t expecting to like it better, but I do. Now it doesn’t matter if my fingers are wet or if I’m not getting a good placement and then have to press my finger down repeatedly and wait for it to get a good position. I just swipe up and it’s unlocked. I was expecting it to be slow too after I’ve heard reviewers say it’s not as fast as touchID, but it’s been way faster than I was anticipating. Highly recommend.
