Haha your face getting scanned everyday of your life without you even knowing it. You seem not to have a problem with that.

Apple’s claim is that the scan stays on the phone and cannot be uploaded to Apple, correct? Is there a way for this to be demonstrably proven? Or is it based on trust?

From an information security perspective, the best way to reduce your company’s liability is to avoid acquiring, storing, and transmitting highly sensitive data.

I believe Apple when they say the Secure Enclave is entirely local. Not because I trust Apple’s desire to protect my privacy, but because I trust Apple to preserve their own interests. If it was discovered that they were syncing and storing this information on their own servers, it would be a scandal that would make batterygate look like nothing. It might even end them.

Those are different. In this case we are talking face + fingerprint + browsing data + credit cards + everything about you.

Unless you live on a private island with no cameras, your face has been scanned many times. At airports, malls, schools, stores, gas stations, restaurants, sporting events, intersections... There are cameras everywhere. If you're so paranoid about Apple or someone else having a scan of your face you should probably wear a mask every time you are in public. Never post pictures of yourself online. Never let anyone take your picture, ever. If you're not willing to do those things, you're fooling yourself in thinking that a phone is going to be the culprit in letting "big brother" identify who you are.
