I just looked at my order for in-store pickup and have the trade in box shipping to me. There's nothing at all in my order that says I can't bring the trade in to the store. Weird?
Look under the “items to be shipped” section of the confirmation page. It should show the “trade in kit” and have particulars for your trade in device. Directly under that is where it says on mine that I cannot trade in at the store.

I see it now. I didn't realize this when placing the order. I assume there's no way to cancel the trade in without also canceling the order? Will bring it with me to the store and hope for the best. I've never had an issue with any mail-in trade-in, but there's a first time for everything.

This is very annoying, I didn’t know this existed either. They should ask you in the order process if you want in store trade in or by mail, especially if you selected in store pick up 🫠🙈

If you call or ask they will give you a hard time. Just take it to a store after you receive the kit.
So I can take the phone + kit to the store when I pick up the new one and they’ll handle it? That would be really great.

Either do a pick or delivery without opting in for the trade in. Then, once you have the new device, you can either set up in the store or just take your time at home to make sure everything has transferred over. Trade in the device after, I usually go in store that weekend to trade it in. They will tie it to the new device so you get the trade in value either back to the original payment method or get a gift card.

I've always heard that it's best to NOT order with a trade-in, as doing so triggers Apple to mail you a trade-in kit. I'm sure people have successfully circumvented that and got the trade done in-store. But there are quite a few stories of issues coming up when you try to trade in-store after choosing the mail-in option.

And I'm sure some of it has to do with the employees. Some may try to go the extra mile to figure something out, while others just won't want to deal with it (understandably).
I ALWAYS select trade-in at time of purchase. The trade in kit is always sent to my house. Yet I always take my trade-in into the store. Apple doesn’t care if you use the trade in kit and ship it to their 3rd party vendor, or physically bring the old device into the store for trade in. THEY DO NOT CARE!

If you do not select trade-in at time of purchase, you run the risk of your trade in value getting lower as each day passes. If you select trade-in at purchase, you lock the trade value in…it’s on the invoice!

Again, Apple doesn’t care if you ship it using the trade-in kit or if you physically bring it in. Regardless, it’s a trade in.

I believe you are correct in principle. I have also completely paid off phone. I have also ordered the trade in kit several times and still taken my trade in directly to Apple Store. There definitely is a new section they added at the bottom of the order that clearly states, “Please note that you will not be able to trade in your device in person at the Apple store.” No clue why they added this, but it is there whether you or I think Apple doesn’t care. My best guess is that they don’t want each transaction to take longer this year? Total guess though. I will still try to get them to take my old phone a few days later.

I heard that I can pre-order the iPhone Friday without a trade in, do an in-store pickup, and I can then trade in my existing iPhone then and have a credit to my card for that value so I don't have to mail it in and wait. Is this true?
I did pre-order y'day with trade-in through delivery by Sep 22.

Someone posted a pic of that restriction. I’m not sure why they had that restriction. I however did not have that restriction on any of the 3 iPhones I ordered on Friday.

Also, we do not “order” a trade-in kit. If you select to have the iPhone shipped…Apple automatically assumes you’ll need the trade-in kit delivered to your address as well (some live nowhere close to an Apple Store). However, as previously stated Apple doesn’t care.

I’d be curious to know all the particulars of those people that were told they couldn’t trade-in at the store. There had to be a common denominator as to why.

I have two phones preordered for pick up, only need one. One is with trade in (via mail) one is without trade in. I want to trade it in store and not deal with shipping it in and I don’t know which one to keep and which one to cancel .

I ordered a instore pick up with no option to trade in store, it automatically ordered the trade in kit to be shipped to my residence.

That makes sense too. You could always trade-in at the store when you pick up your new iPhone. However, I think most wanna set up the new iPhone before they part ways with the old one.

Ask your Apple Store what their policy is for trade-in. Mine says bring it in whenever and they’ll apply the credit towards the original form of payment. I have to have the Order # to do this.

I don’t have anything that says cannot bring into the store.

On my order confirmation email, it legit states my phone cannot be traded in at the store, is that truly the case?
Did you report any damages to your iPhone during the trade-in process?

Mine has the exact value of trade in but yours doesn’t. Wonder why?

Also, hate to beat a dead horse but this from Apple’s trade-in website:

Look under the shipping address where the trade in kit is, it’s directly
Under there
I’ve looked high and low and absolutely do not have any language that says I cannot bring it into the store.

Also, I posted above from Apple’s website that says trade-in can be done in all the stores.

Who knows????

I believe you.

I DO NOT have such a statement anywhere on my 3 separate orders. It’s not in the original emails, nor is it anywhere under my order details/shipping information/trade-in kit information using Apple Store app where my 3 devices are preparing for shipment.

I did read an older thread last night from last year. Apparently others had similar statements last year as well. Not sure why…but if you search Trade-In iPhone at Apple Store. You see under Apple’s website it clearly states all Apple retail stores accept Trade-In.

Again, not sure why some have this statement and others don’t.

FWIW, I just chatted with Apple on the store and they said I can still do the trade in in-store when I come in to pick up my 15 PM order. I guess we'll see if they let it happen.

Ha! I just did exactly the same thing and the rep assured me that in store trade in will definitely be an option.

I just finished up a chat with Apple and according to the specialist’ “because the phone was purchased online despite it being an in store pick up, it can only be traded in online by using the trade in kit” 🤦‍♂️ I guess we shall see what the actual story is on Friday.
