For what it's worth, the issue still exists with the 10.11.1 public beta that got released today (at least for me).

Hi there,

I have the same problem with DSLR pictures on my Retina MacBook Pro 13" Late 2013. The only difference is that I see a gray screen instead of a green one. Maybe it's a driver issue with some MacBook Pros? I asked some friends to try to open my pictures on their Macs with El Capitan (iMac and rMBP 2015) which worked without problems.

Is the problem still present in the El Capitan release version and the latest 10.11.1 beta?

Yep still present at least for me running 10.11.1
It's still present for me as well, maybe the new Public Beta will resolve this problem ... Actually seems to be a 13" specific driver problem with these (not so powerful) Intel HD 5100 series GPU, as mentioned earlier ...
The resizing thing is weird and simple: go to tools --> adjust size --> leave everything as it is & hit ok; now the picture will show up. (at least it does for me)
Yep, this workaround works for me - but I have to do it every time, I open the picture. When I close preview.app (or it crashes) and I reopen the picture, everything's unchanged again and I'm still seeing a green screen after zooming into the large JPEG file ... Hating this, cuz I got a 5 digit number of shots right from California that I need to organise and edit ... Maybe a clean installation of El Capitan will help, I might try this on saturday / sunday.

I'm running the final release of OSX now and there problem is still there... Disappointing!
That's seriously weird. I sent several bug reports to apple and i'm sure some other users did as well, so what the heck is going on there? will they replace the (crappy) preview.app in the near future with something - let's say - more reliable?
I just wanted to downgrade from 10.11.1 to 10.11 Final Release but I think I'll stick with 10.11.1 and I will report tomorrow (awaiting the new Public Beta), if the problem is still present.

I just had a 60 minutes phone call with the apple support. They don't have a solution for the problem right now (we tried several things) but they said that it could be a problem with the GM (some corrupt GM files that are still there after the installation of the final release). So my question: Does the problem exist on 13-inch MacBook Pro Retinas which were upgraded from Yosemite directly to the final release, too?

I have the same problems.
It only happens with big photo's. Try small pictures and you will see that it works.
I worked around it by selecting a bunch of photos at once and open them with preview. Then show the navigation tab and use miniatures of index. Just go up and down though the index a few times and all pictures show normal...

Although this is a serious bug, that apple needs to deal with very quickly!!!

I've got the same issue with my Retina MacBook Pro 13" Late 2013. (No issues with this problem on my older iMac or my newer 12" MacBook. Loaded up the public release version of El Cap and immedietely noticed Preview was busted viewing larger JPG's. I usually get the gray background but sometimes it's green. I was on the phone with Apple Care for two hours, the case was elevated to a senior advisor, to no avail. He did tell me that this had been reported by others, and that they hope to have a fix. This posting confirms that!

Hey guys!
Have a little problem with my preview.app - when I want to open an Image, it shows me just a green screen ...

https://www.dropbox.com/s/m2anyd6s99f52bu/Screenshot 2015-09-02 01.46.42.png

Has anyone the same issue and is aware of a work-around or something? Restart did not help.

It's a JPG-picture, shot by a Canon 550D, 16MP, around 4,5MB in size. I've no idea what's wrong there.
(I'm aware, this is a beta and it might just be an issue that will get fixed - but maybe someone knows a quick solution / work-around etc.)

thanks!

I tested this yesterday and found that when the size of my photos were larger that 4000px on a side, I began to see the same problem. I could downsize the same photo and it would open in preview fine. I used bugreport.apple.com to report the issue. I hope many others do so that maybe they will send out a fix quickly. by the way, the size of the file has nothing to do with it. It seems to be the size of the photo. I attempted to open files that were les than 3MB but the long edge was more that 5000px. same issue. I’ve had larger file sizes but small dimensions and they open fine.

I've got the same issue with my Retina MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2014 (OS X 10.11.1 beta 15B22c),too. I change Preview setting of "Images" and seems to solved this issue transitionary. I changed the setting of "Define 100% scale" from "1 image pixel equals 1 screen pixel" to "size on screen equals on printout." I have tested on JPGs outputting from Nikon, Canon or Pentax and seem work. But when I try to enlarge photos, green screen came out again.

Johnxie, that's an interesting workaround, thanks. I am getting the same result as you, but at least I can now open and view larger images on my screen at a reasonable size. Viewing them at full size gives me the gray/green image as you noted.

This kind of bug has appeared in Photoshop and Aperture. Can any of you with large PSD or TIFF files (5000px across, with layers) please do this test in Photoshop:

- Check OpenCL is enabled in Photoshop's performance prefs.
- Open a large image file.
- Resize the image by 20 or more percent.

Please report here if you get a blank image or application crash.

I'm having this problem too on nearly every image I open.

Between this and that idiotic "SIP" "feature" I'm on the verge of doing a format and going back to Yosemite.

Yes the same problem does exist on 13-inch MacBook Pro Retinas which were upgraded from Yosemite directly to the final release too, as that's what I did was upgrade from Yosemite, I'm not even sure how to submit a bug report to Apple, can someone please send me a link or a tutorial on how I submit it as a bug?, as my warranty/phone support is out od date and I'm not prepared to spend £25 just to be told on the phone they can not fix it!
