I sold my 8core 6.1 with 64gb and 512 SSD D700 for 1900 €. It felt fair, given that you can still do pretty much everything with it.

It's a really interesting situation we have. Instead of dropping, prices are definitely on the rise, especially for D700 models. For example, there hasn't been a D700 that sold for under $2200 on eBay within the last month. I think several factors are at play, including, but not limited to:
-The 7,1 is too expensive for most people, or overkill for their needs so the price can't be justified.
-Support was dropped for the 5,1 and it's only a matter of time before the latest OS will even be able to run on it.
-The eGPU situation has turned into a nightmare so the Mac mini is a poor choice for any task that needs a GPU.
-Other current Macs with worthwhile specs are even more expensive than a 6,1 ($3k+ for a decent spec iMac or MBP)
-More people are working from home due to the pandemic and they need a computer that will get the work done.
-Some people prefer the smaller footprint and portability over the larger towers.

you’ve touched on a few major points that attracted my attention to the Trashcan Mac. Always wanted one since release, but the price was beyond my budget, and I’ve always been a MacBook guy. Only recently, with teleworking and realizing my 2010 Mac Mini behind the times did I seriously consider a desktop upgrade.

the major appeal for me, besides the beautiful design, is the modularity and size like you pointed out; discrete graphics and the processing power and upgradeable RAM limit. Another contributing consideration is the macOS supported.

I have several 32 bit applications that were never updated in the App Store, as well as Adobe applications like Lightroom 6 and Photoshop CS6. Don’t intend to subscribe to CC, and the latest Macs (Air, Pro...) support Catalina at a minimum going forward. I’ll be stuck on Mojave for quite a while, and I’m happy with that.

That said, I started shopping for a Mac Pro 6,1 and found a retailer that had one in stock brand new. Drove 800+ miles to make the round trip in one day and purchased it. Spent a whole week second thinking about opening it, studying it’s configuration against modern day systems, and I even listed it up on eBay with a ridiculous price to buy time on thinking about it.

In the end, I decided it was a good move and opened it up. Good system, love the size, and I don’t feel so constrained like working on my MacBook all day. Also, it handles Witcher 2 from the App Store very well

What exactly do you think makes an eGPU a "nightmare" situation?

Oh my. You don't know? There are multiple threads all over about problems people are having with them. Black screens, restarts, fail to boot, panics, apps not supporting them, apps losing support, etc.

I've been running an eGPU setup for quite a while. I haven't had any of the issues you mention with my 6,1 driving an LG Ultrafine 5k.

That's great! I noticed you have a Vega 56. I have read that Vega 56 & 64 are working better as eGPU than Polaris and Navi cards right now.

Nice setup! That's so awesome you found one in stock at a regular retailer. Totally eligible for AppleCare.

Thank you, sir! Just got the AppleCare updated today, had to call support because the warranty didn't auto-adjust and the site kept refusing the date I set for it. But the advisors were friendly, and it took probably less than 30 mins. Now to make a decision on AppleCare+ for 299...hmmm ?

They still have same model in stock with the D700s at the Houston Micro Center at time of this writing, if you can get there. I had to make a decision whether to drive to Kansas or Houston, decided Kansas would be least troublesome.

They also have one with the D500s for a few hunndy cheaper... but, why?

Cheers,

Sshh don't tell everyone lol. I saw that actually. I would grab it if I was closer, but with tax, airfare, and hotel it would be kind of expensive still. It's about $1k less for me to pick up a D500 at the store in California. So guess what I'm doing. :) Since it's not that far I was able to find flights there and back the same day for about $200 round trip. I had a hard time deciding between going with that or keeping the refurbished D300 I have coming, but I think going with the new D500 and buying AppleCare+ is a smart move.

Update: They cancelled my order. They said they couldn't find it in the store. Oh well.

I had considered flying, too, but these gas prices! Plus, staying home all day with the pandemic going on gave me cabin fever. It might be worth driving some long distance, and if you have to, staying at a hotel overnight. I only had to fill up three times, and I drive a V6 stang!

Noticed the new D500 price is back to regular! Maybe it's worth keeping the D300 if the price is back up?

I've been feeling the cabin fever too. It'll be nice getting out, even if it's a boring flight. It'll be fun looking out at the scenery. They had one marked down as clearance. They have a demo unit at the Rockville, MD store with the full warranty marked down even lower.

Better pick it up! I actually found that one while playing around changing locations, it's a great deal

Seeing as it's only $2.4K and I live in Houston, I might consider the 8-Core D700.

Go for it! The 8-core is apparently a very good compromise between the 6 and 12 core. You should check this guy's video out when he talks about the processors in the 6,1. Plus, the model I got is a 2017 model with High Sierra installed.

But would it be worth the price? For that same money I could get a base 16in MBP or even mid-tier one on sale for about the same.

It's not worth the price if you're asking that question. If you want a laptop get the MBP. The Mac Pro is something different entirely and you definitely know it if it's for you.

I don't have any issues myself, so I'm not going looking.

Tech issues are like medical problems—you start looking for issues unprompted you're going to become a hypochrondriac quick.

Okay, everyone. Just purchased the 8-Core d700 from the Houston Micro Center. Apparently several people called throughout the day for it but I was the first one to physically make it there.
I finally have one after all these years. ?

Enjoy! In my opinion, it's a wonderful and elegant machine. A 6,1 D700 12c is my daily driver at home!

hah, you could do a 'retro' unboxing video ;)

? I can't corroborate that. Good news, I also have an RX 580 (Polaris architecture) with a Mantiz Venus box. Just booted the 6,1 and worked fine on the latest public Catalina build. FYI; any TB2 Mac requires purge-wrangler.

Also learning (I must have dumb luck plugged it into the correct port) that TB Bus 0 (bottom ports) is where eGPU needs to be plugged in on the 6,1

I'm envious that you guys found new D700s. Be sure to get AppleCare+ for them! You'd not have to worry about any repair costs until 2023! :) Those D700s are expensive to replace... Too bad the closest Micro Center from me is over 1,600 km and over 3,600 km to Houston. I'll have to make-do with my D300 that's scheduled to arrive tomorrow. If the eGPUs are working fine then I can get one of those to compensate.

Sweet, look at that! I figured it would probably be a hot item, they just don't ship. You might have to call in to get the warranty corrected, but it shouldn't be a lot of trouble. Have fun and enjoy!

That's quite a distance either way. If the Micro Center were closer here, I wouldn't have minded grabbing one for you. The trip to Kansas was fun, and this is like the best time to go on a road trip. But it sure wears ya out after a whole day of travel

Thanks! I got it plugged in to my TB Display right now and it looks fantastic. I guess I’ll be using my 2018 i5 Mac Mini as a server of sorts, or protein folding. Lol

I called after hours apparently so I have to wait until tomorrow, but yeah I’m getting the warranty corrected. ?

Was it a good price?

It was $2.4k last night but this morning was $2.2k so I decided to get it, and add my gift card laying around to drop it down a bit more so I can get Apple Care + for basically free.

Love the brand new feel. Considering plopping it next to my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 and using Luna Display. I’m sure I’ll find a nice setup for it.

Next items on the list: 2015 MBP 15in R9 (doesn’t matter whether it’s 2.5 or 2.8 ghz as long as it is a good deal) and base model iMac Pro ($3.5k Apple Refurbished at OWC right now but hoping to drop a bit more by the time the new one comes out)

Oh and that custom AC/BT 4.2 airport card for my 2.9ghz i7 Mid 2012 MBP 13in.
