That's pretty new. :) You can use VLC player for videos QuickTime won't play. You might want to get more serious about your photography. You know these workstations aren't meant for gaming.

I'm trying to, I need to take my M9 out more. Hahaha, but I got quite a few games already! It would be cool to consolidate entertainment and business into one setup ;)

Nice. I got mine for about $40 on an OWC clearance sale under 'Used Apple Brand RAM for Mac Pro' or something like that. Just confirmed and all of them work. I might consider the 64GB later, but that's as high as I'll go. Don't wanna go with 128GB and lose some of the speed and bandwidth for for more capacity.

That's a great deal! I've been looking at OEM RAM on eBay, and haven't found 32GB any cheaper than 100. Used. Have mostly been searching for 64GB, but my wallet can use a little break. I feel like I've been spending more since teleworking lately.

I noticed the new D500 model I previously ordered for pickup at the California Micro Center store showed it was back in stock after they cancelled my order. I've also read their online stock system is live so so they lied about it being sold. I asked them to hold it for me and they told me they don't hold items for customers. I don't know why they have the store pickup option on their website then. Maybe they figured I wasn't local since my billing address is out of state. Still crumby of them though. Last night I noticed they marked it down to $1399 so I thought about flying down there this morning to get it. I checked about noon when I would have got there and it wasn't there so someone must have bought it this morning. I'm glad I didn't fly down there since it would have been a wasted flight. Someone got a heck of a deal. It would have been silly for me to get that one anyways though I guess since there isn't much of a difference at all between the D300 and D500. If was going to get another one I should get a D700.

Still after that D500?? Might be worth keeping an eye out, you'd definitely still be able to recoup a lot of money out of the D300, and the peace of mind having what you really want is worth the extra $$$. I reserved the D700 from Kansas after deciding the make the trip, but I was definitely feeling uneasy about it....I knew they had a couple other open box D500s, and I didn't plan on coming back empty handed!

I ran a couple passes of Memtest86 overnight and it found no errors. Seems to be good RAM.

I called Apple to ask them if my machine has a warranty. It doesn't hurt I figured because when I entered the serial number on the support page it doesn't give any info. It just says to validate the purchase date. I went through two lower employees before they put an "agreement specialist" on the phone. I told him I just bought it and he said it doesn't have a warranty. I said that doesn't make any sense and he said it doesn't need to make sense to me and I'm not getting a warranty from Apple. He was very rude. Oh well. :) He did mention the purchase date was sometime in 2017. He didn't say where it was from. I guess I'll assume it came from their online store.

My experiences with their phone support has varied, and I've been lucky to deal with some very nice agents. When I went through for the warranty, I talked to two different people, and like Noel mentioned, it probably helped to have that receipt handy. But it sounds like yours was purchased or stored for a while before being purchased. If you bought yours from an individual, I'm wondering if it would be worth asking them for the original receipt if there is still any warranty left. I can't think of why someone would buy something in 2017, keep it in the box for a few years, then resell it and never opening it. Just a thought

Yeah that is interesting isn't it. The seller has a ton of different random things for sale like liquidation you'd find at Ross Dress for Less or Nordstrom Rack. It's hard to say where it came from and why it remained unopened for three years. I'd like to get more info from Apple about it, but it looks like they won't share info like that. It would be nice to have a warranty for piece of mind, but it's not a big deal. Hopefully it wouldn't be super expensive to have it fixed if something like the GPUs fail. I've read some people say they've had the GPUs replaced in these two or three times, but I'm guessing that's not typical. I imagine the majority of them are going strong since new.

Maybe a company bought it but ultimately decided against deploying it. Could be the employee who needed it left or the company itself went bankrupt and it’s was part of a liquidation sale...

Sweet. I got someone better on the phone at Apple who knows their stuff and they sold me AppleCare+. :)

What was different this time? You/He found new some info that it's the first activation after refurbishment?

I don't know. The agent I got this time didn't understand what the issue was before. They explained to me there's an original purchase date from Apple to the 3rd party reseller and they're supposed to update the purchase date for the customer.
[automerge]1588891245[/automerge]
Also, not exactly a complaint, but something to point out is that AppleCare+ costs the same for the 2013 Mac Pro as the 2019 Mac Pro now. I guess after they raise the price it becomes effective for that whole product group.

Pretty much what happened to me. First person said it was already purchased before and warranty was halfway done, and then their supervisor tells me basically what you said.

Finally started to see some downward trend on the 2013 Mac Pro. There’s a six core going for $1600 CDN, but it’s on the other side of the country. Others are still posting theirs close to MSRP, which is insane, but par for Apple products on Kijiji.

I’m not even gonna look anymore. I got a brand new one for a good price. Don’t wanna end up with buyer’s remorse if refurbs start dropping to new lows. Besides we’ll get Apple Care + and they won’t. Lol

True. Sadly up here in Canadatown you can’t get any new or refurbished units. Very few resellers even carried them. So I’m waiting on a bankruptcy or surplus sale to pick one up.

The 12-core in my department has less than 1000 hours of use since we got it in 2015. And my projects account for about half of those hours. Once it goes to surplus, I’ll grab it.

If you can't find a new or refurbished unit you might be able to find a used one that still has AppleCare+. This D700 unit for $2999 with 2022 expiration was a fairly good deal.

Here are a couple brand new units for sale. If they won't ship to Canada perhaps you could utilize a mail forwarding service.

6 core D300 unit for $2380:

8 core D700 unit for $3239.09:
Also listed on the Sears website for $3234.09: https://www.sears.com/apple-mqgg2lla-apple-mac-pro-desktop-computer-eight/p-SPM12647007840

Maybe you all know this already, but I was looking over the terms and conditions for the warranty and it says Apple can reject covering any repair for any reason if they think the computer has been opened by someone other than Apple or an authorized service provider. So that kind of puts a CPU upgrade out the window, at least a DIY upgrade. Of course those of you who already have an 8 core probably don't need to upgrade unless you require a teeny bit extra multicore performance. Have any of you had success having the CPU upgraded by an authorized service provider? I guess I'll need to call some of them. I noticed OWC offers upgrades, but it doesn't look like they're authorized.

interestingly, I bought my 6,1 “Apple refurb” from them during a flash sale last summer just after the 7,1 was announced. It came in the Apple refurb box. It was a 6 core with OWC upgraded 64GB ram and OWC faster PCIe SSD and D700. When I registered it for Apple Care+ it was supposed to be a 8-core. I reached out to OWC and they assured me if I ever had an issue it wouldn’t be a problem since they're an Apple authorized reseller and repair shop? I have since upgraded to a 12-core but always wonder if I did have to send it in for service what would happen since I don’t have the serials numbers stock CPU and SSD. Here’s hoping I never have to find out!

That's really strange. I wonder why OWC put a 6 core in it if it came with an 8 core from Apple. I imagine Apple would want to see the 8 core in it if it came in for service. I can't find anywhere that says OWC is authorized by Apple. On their site they say it shouldn't void the warranty, but they can't make a guarantee. Then they mention the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. That sounds like non-authorized to me.

FAQ for OWC Upgrade Service for Apple Mac Pro

Edit: It looks like you can't search for authorized service providers on Apple's website for the US. It just takes you to the support page. You can search for authorized resellers though. It doesn't find anything at OWC's location in Woodstock, Illinois.

Nope, they're not authorized. OWC is located in Woodstock, Illinois. No authorized service provider found in that location.

[automerge]1588993387[/automerge]
No authorized provider found at their locations in Henderson, NV or Austin, TX either.

Good to know! :(

I may have misinterpreted their response as they were authorized and never dove into it. It’s likely they claimed similar to the link you posted. I was very excited at the time, I think they were blowing out their stock so I got a pretty good deal on this refurb. It’s been nothing but a charm.

They used to allow you to customize the 6,1 for purchase. Looking now, the page has changed since I bought. You used to be able to select processor, including the 8 and 10 core not offered by Apple, video card and the faster OWC SSD. There used to be a statement on the page if memory serves that their techs would only open the box to upgrade ram and SSD. My box is definitely a legit apple refurb, it has the apple serial stickers on it and was still eligible for AppleCare coverage when I purchased it. I guess if I ever have to send it in I’ll grab an 8-core on eBay, lol.

That's great you got a good deal on a certified refurb from them. It's too bad I wasn't looking for one when they were still selling them. It looks like they don't have any 6,1s in stock now at all.

So it looks like at least some of the authorized service providers perform upgrades. Here's an example. It's a shop in Costa Mesa called The Mac Guys. I found them searching for authorized resellers on Apple's website. Their site says, "We carry some of the common custom configurations that Apple provides. If not in stock we can expedite an order directly from the factory for you, or custom configure in-house."

[automerge]1588995311[/automerge]
I have another suggestion for MacPoulet on finding a Mac Pro in Canada. Perhaps search on Apple's website for resellers and call around; especially the smaller shops that don't list their inventory online. Maybe you'll get lucky.

I don't know what area you're in, but here are some listings in Vancouver.

Thanks! I’ve been looking at the list of resellers around the country (I’m in Alberta, but have friends in Vancouver) and was checking their online inventories. Most only carry iDevices and the occasional laptop, but I’ll start calling/emailing them per your suggestion.

@MisterAndrew Yes, looks like they’re only selling used models now, and the prices seem higher compared to what I was able to grab. Last summer I think I could choose between new, refurb and used and recall getting a steep discount. It’s what made me pull the trigger. Paid 2,100 (6,1 was still being sold on Apple and Apple refurb). A friend was unable to get the same deal a few days or week later. Receipt says this was a few weeks after WWDCs 7,1 announcement. I recall knowing I wanted a 12-core so opted for the 6 because it was cheaper to just upgrade myself down the road. Had I known they were going to crack it open and replace the stock 8 with a 6 core though? Hindsight, don’t like that at all.

from my sales receipt:
Apple Mac Pro, 3.5GHz 6-core Xeon E5-1650v2 (Current Model) with 64GB DDR3, 1.0TB SSD, D700, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, macOS 10.13.x High Sierra. Apple Refurbished, Factory Sealed, Opened for Upgrade Only; 1 Year OWC Fulfilled Limited Warranty.

That's a phenomenal deal for a D700 model. If I saw one like that now I'd grab it in a second.
[automerge]1588996852[/automerge]
Perhaps this is another reason why the supply of these Mac Pros became constrained. A server company called MacStadium was buying up hundreds of them per month. Perhaps that's where all the refurbs from Apple's online store went that all vanished one day.

Holy sweet Macintosh. Look at all those. That's just one of 5 data centers.

In November they were searching for more. With a bounty offered.

Just this month the VP tweeted they've stockpiled hundreds of them. Look at all the brown boxes in that last pic -> refurbished models. Looks like maybe my hypothesis is correct.

It actually makes me pretty upset they've hoarded all of those. It's like the jerks who hoarded the GPUs during the stupid bitcoin mining frenzy. I'd love to see someone go liberate all of those Macs being held hostage. :) Also, I wonder how long they will keep them in service. They've caused the prices to become inflated by constricting the supply currently, but eventually I imagine they'll dump all of those on the used market. Their company alone was probably a major deciding factor for Apple making a rack mount version of the new Mac Pro and I assume they'll eventually buy up those to replace the 2013s.
