For me, fiddling with the printer tray appeared to be the resolution, but it could just be hitting print multiple times until it went through. This is really the first "show-stopper" bug (relatively small as it is) in macOS I've come across in a long, long time!

UPDATE: I spent a little over 90 minutes on the phone with Apple. I created a new volume on my MBP's SSD, loaded Sonoma on the new volume, installed the printer on the new volume and voila, problem solved. Apple technical support told me the problem was related to my volume and that the solution was to migrate my data to the new volume and then delete the old volume. Although I can do that, I think the time involved to tweak all the settings is worse than living with the "Printer out of paper banner" but time will tell hat I decide to do.

PS. What would really suck would be the migration to the new volume brough the bug with it. This has yet to be tested:

OTHER STEP: Apple technical support is going to share this news with engineering to see whether they can come up with a fix given the added / new information. I have a follow up call with Apple technical support in 1 week's time.

UPDATE: I have two different laptops. First laptop (mine), I wiped the disk clean, I reinstalled macOS 14.1.1, I configured the printer and all good -- no banner. I printed a page and the banner is backed! Conclusion, that was a lot of work for nothing. Second laptop (my friends), I installed the printer and all god - no banner. I printed a page and the banner appeared.

The problem is NOT my install / machine. The problem is repeatable!

Now what?

Print Center is a new - even if resurrected - app (as you probably know anyway). Most likely, you're dealing with inevitable bugs of the first version. Make sure to log this bug with Apple and hope for the best.

Apologies, redundant.

I do wish Apple would post a list oh known annoyances / bugs like this one to avoid wasting time. I must have spent 3 hours between Apple support and rebuilding my MBP (and I still have a few nits to resolve).

3 hours? well consider yourself lucky. i once spent several days troubleshooting a rare Xcode bug that only affected a few users - but made it impossible to use Xcode for those few users affected by the bug (including myself). astonishingly, Apple did fix it in a few months (with the next Xcode release).

there's plenty of stories like this.

the worst bugs are those that most users don't experience. they're therefore hard to reproduce and take longer to fix (if they're ever fixed). so your best hope is that other users will run into the same bug and report it to Apple.

there's a list of known issues, but very few are listed there - and your bug is probably not considered officially known anyway: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/macos-release-notes/macos-14-release-notes

Appreciated, all of it!

I should have been clearer. I spent 3 hours over the last 2 days but I started reporting the bug on October 10. I dont want to think about how many hours have been wasted!

I will take a look at the list later tonight, thank you!

OP:

Questions:
Even though you're getting an "out of paper" alert, will the document still print?

Or... does the "out of paper" warning PREVENT the document from being printed?

If it will still print anyway, I'd just take note of the bug... and continue on.

It might be fixed in the future, or it might not be.

But so long as the printer still WORKS, just put up with it.

I spoke with Apple (again) and Epson (definition of pain). It took a while for me to work my up to teh Epson food chain but I was finally told by Epson that this is known issue and they are working on it.

With a little luck it will be solved in time for macOS 15.0! 🤯

For me it just took opening and closing the paper tray a few times before it started working again. I suspect flipping the printer off and on again would work as well.

I wish!

I tried both of those numerous time with no effect!

It seems I am left waiting for Epson to fix the problem.

Sorry to hear that. I have two HP laser printers (one color, the other B&W) that showed the error message.

[Update:] the latest macOS update (14.1.2) seems to have fixed the problem for me. At least, I no longer have the issue. But I don't know if it had anything to do with the OS update.

I have the same problem. My printer is an Epson ET-5800. Both my M1 pro MacBook and my wife's M2 Mac Mini running Sonoma 14.1.2 show the out-of-paper error. Printer prints and scans fine.

@Dutch749 , I have been speaking with Epson and they confirmed to me that teh problem is on their end (i.e., driver and/or firmware) but certainly no one there is in a hurry to fix it! It is very annoying!

On my previous Epson printer set to Dutch language I often got messages in Portuguese. I guess that's how much care they put in their machines. They print nice when they work, though. And this one (my second, first was spitting out prints) works fine except the warning. I'll just ignore it. And get on their asses about it.

They should put out less different machines and make those work better. Who needs 100 different choices of a printer at 100 price points.

Thanks for the answer!

@Dutch749 a pleasure. I to wish that they weld get this fixed. While I am not hopeful, perhaps macOS 15 will fix the problem!!

I have to deal with this problem very often in my house and for me, the problem is simple although maybe not relevant for you?
The problem here is the driver defaults to 'rear tray'. This is always the case if you try to print an image as it always assumes you will be using photo paper and will want to place a single sheet in the rear tray and always true when trying to print from the phone.
I haven't seen anyone mentioning this so just check that it really is trying to print from the cassette or main tray-or whatever it's called for you- where you do have paper, and not the rear tray where you don't.

I changed the paper tray from "Auto-select" to "Main tray" and the problem remained. I wish it would have been as easy as changing the paper tray.

The problem remains. Sigh!

I have the same problem. A couple of days ago I upgraded my MacBook Pro and iMac to Sonoma 14.3.1 and installed a new Epson WF-7840 Series printer on both Macs. The Print Centre on both displays the same error message for the Epson printer 'Paper Out' and '!Printer is out of Paper'. It is not out of paper and I can print successfully from both Macs to the Epson using the any of the paper trays. My other, original, printers don't show the same problem. Interestingly, if I go to the Apple Menu/System Settings/Printers and Scanners the Epson WF-7840 is correctly shown as 'Idle'. I have no problem with my Windows 11 machine. So I guess I'll log a case with Apple and Epson.

@BobS2931 I am saddened to read that you too are feeling the pain. To make maters worse, it is an Epson problem, they know about and they don' seem to care about it.

I think the best we can hope for is that macOS 15 will somehow fix this.

It will be the last Epson printer I buy! Their lack of concern puts me off!

I have the same with an Epson EcoTank 5800. It seems as though more than one model is affected. Annoying enough to come looking here, but not worldshattering. Not going to reinstall MacOS.

My previous Epson (Workforce 3540) was setup in Dutch Language but displayed several messages in Portuguese every time it was done printing. Worked for 8+ years that way through several updates. They should build less different machines and make those better. Whoever needs 100 different models of printers...
