I'm debating going from a 13PM to a base 17 to have a lighter phone. Waiting to see reviews confirm if the battery life truly is better/all-day with heavy usage in real life, as I'm always a bit skeptical of the video playback stats.

It looks like the big 3 carriers in the US are giving the value of a 17pro with trade in. I would probably consider a 17 or even an Air if I weren't able to get a Pro for 'free'. I actually plan to go with a pro max for $100.
This... If I decide to buy outright, I'll trade in with Apple for a regular 17 from my PM. Otherwise I'll find an old phone lying around and trade it in with AT&T for a free 17 Pro, but then I'm locked in with AT&T for the next 3 years.

I'm not in a rush to preorder and get on release day this time around. I'll wait for the smoke to clear and see what I want to do after some reviews and the hype dies down.

i have the 15 pro, and the only feature i really cared about that stopped me from getting a base iphone in the past was pro-motion. I usually upgrade every 2 years but the base 17 feels like mostly a side-grade from the 15 pro. 12gb ram might have made me feel different. i'll wait for some reviews and then make a decision

Honestly, you can probably wait a couple more years before upgrading and not lose out on anything major.

We still have the iPhone 12 and 13 that we use for travel abroad (physical SIM) and they work just fine. The 13's battery life is actually still pretty decent. The 12 needs a power bank by afternoon.

Thinking to trade in my 14PM and get a base 17! I detest the bulkiness of my current phone. 3 years and I still don’t like it. Yes, screen is pretty but I never watch videos nor play videogames on my phone. I have an iPad for that. Battery on the base model seems excellent too nowadays. Very tempted for a delta of £400.

Same for me: 17 (256 gb) is smaller and lighter and I can upgrade from my 14 PM 512 gb for 250€.

I have a 15 pro and i have ordered a standard 17 in white. I get terrible battery life on my 15 pro so was going to upgrade to a 17 pro but the only reason i got a pro in the first place was due to promotion and always on display. Now the base phone has these, i don't need a pro. I don’t game and I don’t take many photos so i can save a load of money.
15 pro owner here

Yeah my Iphone 15 Pro's battery health is not great, it think it's due to the 15 Pro overheating/having a poor cooling system

But it's still a great phone and I love my titanium blue :)

I'm not upgrading this year BUT if I did , I would go with the base model - the hardware upgrades are really good compared to the previous base models

The 17 Pro is better but not $400 better than the base 17

The 17 Pro is also ugly and chunky
(and the base model has better colour choices)

I would miss the telephoto lense but I can live without it; what I would really miss is ProRaw photography though; I'm a pro photographer but I don't have my camera with me 24/7 lol

So I preordered the 17 Pro and I have been debating this all week. Then the other night we had the Northern Lights. My son took a picture with his 16 and I used my 16 Pro. I could see the picture quality difference between the two. That sold me on staying in the pro line.

If the rare occasion of northern lights is worth the price difference for you thats great! In the end everyone should pick what they can afford and what they need. And no one else can decide this.

i will buy base iphone17 because i am so unhappy with the constant overheating and weight of my iphone15pro

do you think the iphone 17 will less heaten up in daily use?

Yes. As far as I can recall, the main problem with the 15 Pro was overheating issues and throttling under load.

so how is everyone feeling now that reviews are out
The battery doesn’t seem quite improved enough for me to justify moving from my 13PM. I’ll probably just let the battery degrade until I can get the free replacement and then check up on next year’s lineup.

Good just thinking about if the Pro would have been the better choice for a lil longer battery life. But in the end the price difference is really big and the 17 is also more lightweight.

I have always been a Pro Max user and have bought several. This is the first time I am buying the base model for myself. It is absolutely not a cost decision, it is just that the base 17 has every Pro feature that I personally want or need in a phone and is much lighter than my 15 Pro Max.

Base feels excellent - noticeably more comfortable/lighter than the pro I felt in store this morning, very similar to the 15 Pro, almost a bit sleeker even though a teeny big "bigger" if that makes sense. Extremely snappy/smooth. So far, very happy with it - setting up fresh so taking a bit but well worth it!

14 Pro to base 17 in white, reporting in! It feels like the perfect blend between the Air and the new Pro. Enjoying the lighter weight and USB-C in particular.

Exactly what I thought! Love the white too even though I felt like I had the most boring order in there :) So far this is running noticeably better than my 15P, and I'm not missing what's missing.

I just finished setting up my base iPhone 17 last night (replacing my 16 Pro as my primary). Seems very much the same, but noticeably lighter in-hand. Screen is just as good as the Pro now with the ProMotion. Gonna use this as my primary for a while and see if any downsides or other noticeable upsides.

I got the base too but with a GVC screen :(. If I move the base of the phone away from and tilt the top towards me I can see a distinct green tint.
