It'll need to be numerical otherwise no one will know what you're talking about. Someone mentioned it might go the same way as iOS, but I don't support that idea. I reckon the Air will be its own line with the Air 2 being released next year alongside a new foldable device.

I get what you’re saying, but we have this with iPad’s, Apple TV’s, and MacBooks. While there’s ancillary information further identifying them. It’s pretty much just the model name.

iPhones are refreshed yearly so getting rid of the numerical identifier would cause too much confusion.

I don't think we will be referring to the next iPhone Pro as the "iPhone Pro, A20 Pro model" like we do with M4 Airs/Pros, etc...

It wouldn't confuse me or other tech enthusiasts, however I think regular consumers would be perplexed. MacBooks are different as laptops are only a small segment of Apple's sales.

But it’s largely a prosumer designator right?

To Apple it’s simply a MacBook Pro. The name doesn’t change. We as prosumers further designate it with the processor.

If you take a look at their website. The iPhone, watches, and AirPods, are the only products with numerical designators.

The iPhone Pro is more of a fashion symbol though. I see more Pros than non-Pros and no one seems to be using them for the extra powerful hardware. Perhaps it's different this time with the Air being the luxurious device on offer and the Pro being designed purely for power and efficiency. Time will tell if there will be an iPhone Air 2.

Like I said, I don't particularly mind if Apple go with date designations.

Got my 17 on Saturday. Today I took it off the charger just over 14 hours ago. Screen brighness is set at about 40-45%. Used it for 35 min carplay drives to and from work (one way with Google Maps running, just to see traffic and so on). Streamed music each way. Normal use at work and so on all day and at home since. Intentionally have not placed it on any sort of charger since I woke up just to see how it would do.

In the battery app, it shows this:

For my use, yes, it seems fine so far. My prior 16 Pro was getting only a tad less battery life later in the day. Of course like anyone, it depends on your usage, screen time, streaming time, etc.

I'm coming from a 13 Pro and I can't decide between the 17 or 17 Pro (or perhaps keep the 13 Pro for another year since it's still running great). Would the cameras on the reg 17 be a significant upgrade from the 13 Pro? Even though I've gotten used to the 13P, would really prefer the lighter weight of the reg 17.
I swear this 17 camera is noticeably better than my 15P! I wasn't even paying attention and kept saying wow - these are amazing (without any tweaking etc.)

For me the „base“ 17 is also the best looking phone in the line up (apart from the 16e). No distractions, clean lines. Especially the white one. Even better than the Air - the titanium frame looks a bit cheap I think. Anyway, this is just my opinion about the looks, not functionality.
Agreed - super happy w/ my white one, blue speck grip case, feels great in the hand and performance has blown me away after being a little nervous "downgrading" from 15P. Got Anker white accessories, white stand, etc - it feels fresh/clean/streamlined :)

Oh and side note, had to speak to 2 people from the executive office yesterday/today and both referred to it as the base, said sales for them were huge/beyond expectations, and they both were getting one themselves (who knows if that part is true) - but was interesting info!

is performance as good as/ better than 15pro? how are thermals?
I'm not doing any tests or in depth comparisons but in terms of normal/regular use etc - it is 100% noticeably better in all ways. I figured it would be some improvement, but this has really surprised me. Ended up getting 3 friends/family to switch from the pro line and they are all extremely happy too. I will note - I did set up as new, so I'm sure that helped, but the 15P was solid, clean/strong batt life, and not overused. Everyone I spoke to at Apple (2 higher ups on the phone and 3 people in store over 3 days) - all said it's the star and oversold even beyond their expectations.

what were your reasons?

Nothing the Pro brings to the table justifies the price difference for me.

- Screen: same screen this year (finally with Pro Motion)
- Battery: 17 base model has better battery life than 16 Pro. Granted, 17 Pro battery is on par with 16 Pro Max.
- Cameras: all cameras are 48 MP this year. Pro only has the telephoto lens, which I don’t use that much.
- Materials and design: 17 Pro materials and design are not substantially better than the 17 base model.

This time around, the Pro really seems intended for photographers and videographers.

Just over 1 week with the 17 and no real complaints. Missed not having the 5x optical zoom while at a college football game on Friday night, but other than that, this 17 is at least as good as my 16 Pro it replaced. Lighter in hand for sure. Not sure if battery is better, but no worse.

If you set the main camera lens to capture (HEIC) at 48MP, it might help when you crop-to-zoom as there's more pixels to play with.

This past Saturday, I managed to upgrade from a Space Black 14 Pro Max to a Sage iPhone 17 and couldn't be happier. For a guy, I don’t have very large hands, so I’m relieved that I don't have to do hand gymnastics to use the phone one-handed. Also, the weight difference is crazy. I never knew how heavy the stainless steel, while very nice and premium, was. I’ve always wanted a green phone, so I’m glad Apple decided to release this one.

I had a 16e with me at a football game the other night and there was one moment where I thought, "oh shoot, I wish I had the 4x or 5x zoom here". But I didn't in that moment. So I ended up zooming in ~3x with the 16e. Did it look as good as the 16p (previous phone) or 17p (tried briefly)? No. But I could still see what was in the photo, see the individual I wanted to see, clearly tell it was them, see that they were smiling, and get the general idea/feel of the situation even though the photo wasn't as good as it could've been.

I've also been, in general, trying to photo/video less and enjoy the moments more - I might get one or two for memory's sake, but I'm trying not to be that person that wants to capture every second of a moment b/c I personally believe that takes away from fully enjoying the moment.

That scenario pushed me to the base 17 the next day and I'm loving it. The zoom situations are rare for me; plus they're usually serviceable even without the telephoto. The 17 is buttery smooth, solid battery life for me so far (even though I'm still only about 56 hours into having it and it's still "indexing"), and the general feel of it is just great. Definitely the under-the-radar success this year IMHO.
