Kev, I'd like to reply to everything you've written, but since I'm a little short on time at the moment, I'll hit the most relevant.
See, what I think is currently my biggest problem is that I've become fixated on this idea of being able to trace an object with my eye, and keep my hand perfectly coordinated so I can duplicate what I'm looking at perfectly.
This is why I've been doing blind contours over and over again. This is why my hand drawings aren't coming out proportionally correct. I'm not looking at the page while I'm drawing, I'm tracing the contours of my hand with my eye, hoping my pencil keeps up.
Funnily enough, this is something the book I'm reading tells me not to do. I should be practicing for the experience, not to attempt drawing a perfect replica on a sheet of paper. This is all just a tangent I've found myself going off on. On the plus side, it is helping my hand-eye coordination, but I'm not taking the right lessons away from it.
I need to study form. And to do that, I need to do more gestural drawings. I'm gonna hit that hard tonight.
Understandable although you seem like you would be fine if you just established your sense of form. Other than that it's reasonably clean. I mean have you considered just a bit of digital where you can transform things at will or doing more of the scribble blockouts to establish form? It seems like that intermittent distraction is taking a toll.
