I have the 9.7 and just got the 10.5. Although, yes, I can definitely see a difference when scrolling or flipping through pages, has anyone found an app or something that truly shows the benefits of ProMotion? Where do you notice it the most?

Thanks.

How is Office free on 9.7" Pro? Are you talking about read-only mode?

I too was curious about this. It seems as though ProMotion shows its full glory during drawing but other than that, is it really noticeable?

I know that youtube caps out out 60hz and probably movies (netflix, hbo, etc) too so is there any media consumption avenues where you truly take advantage of the high refresh rate? A person can only swipe through the UI so many times to get their monies worth.

Media isn’t really the kind of thing that benefits for 120hz - most broadcast content is filmed at 24 frames per second, the only exception I can think of is the Hobbit movie which was shot at and shown in theatres at 48. The difference is now the display can operate at 24hz during playback rather than having to add duplicate frames in order to display at a fixed 60hz which is the case for older iPads with non variable refresh rates. This saves a bit of power.

Some TVs offer a 120hz option, this often leads to the “soap opera” effect, where additional frames are generated to pad out the content, which gives smooth motion but can sometimes look a bit too real/smooth to the point where people tend to dislike it. Obviously content matters - for sports I find it actually enhances the experience, but prefer watching movies without artificial enhancement as the directors intended.

Aside from delivering a fluid UI, one area 120Hz really shines is with AR/VR - it really adds to the smoothness and realism of the experience.

I just got back from the Apple Store after trying the new iPad Pro 10.5" here's my review.

#1. It's NOT a Pro iPad without 120hz Promotion it's that amazing hands down.
#2. On full Brightness the 10.5" Pro makes my 9.7" Pro on full brightness look as if it's a Half brightness.
#3. It gives me a Headache after a short while With Text and Video moving side to side and scrolling at 120hz it gave me a headache Once I moved my head away.
#4. Apple Pencil speed going from 50ms milliseconds to 20ms is a game changer again no lag.
#5. Colors are equally as good 9.7" Pro vs 10.5" Pro
#6. Everything else feels the Same there's No better LTE, No WiF, or Bluetooth improvements.
#7. I still have 1 year of AppleCare left. On my 9.7" Pro that's value I can't throw away.
#8. Job requires Microsoft Office Apps and they are 100% Free on 9.7" Pro and Cost a Monthly fee on the 10.5" Pro with a Subscription. Not a fan of Subscription Apps
#9. 120hz Makes a huge difference even for YouTube Videos they look crystal clear has to been seen in person.
#10. Holding out hope Apple runs dry on 9.7" Pro models and has to give out 10.5" Replacements.

As they have been known to do.

https://9to5mac.com/2017/04/15/apple-ipad-fourth-gen-replacement-upgrade-ipad-air-2/

And since the 9.7" Pro was a very short lived model and discontinued stock is no doubt tight. Vs the 10.5" SIze which will live on for many years.

Thanks for the impressions. However, #9 is simply not true. The new iPad Pro doesn't run at 120hz (120fps) on YouTube. It'll match the source material - i.e. 60hz with either 60fps or 30fps videos etc.

The 24fps thing is a tiny bit more complicated than that. It's really 23.976fps. I don't know what the new iPad Pro supports as yet. 24hz is not the same as 23.976hz and causes a frame skip playing 24p (23.976hz) material every 41 seconds. Mac OS doesn't even officially support 23.976hz (can't make it work even on the newest 2014 Mac minis in OS X). However, Mac OS DOES support 24hz (24.000hz). Annoyed me for a long time, and part of the reason I use a Windows PC as my media center - that and Mac OS also doesn't support the major HD audio codecs.

while the screen looks super nice (noticeably brighter than my ipad Air) and crisp/ great colors with evenly whites and nearly no backlight bleed on highest brightness with black.... I don't notice ProMotion much... flipping through pages looks *about as smooth* as on my iPad Air and surfing in safari is similar as well. it's a tad smoother and you can read better when scrolling slowly - but not night and day.

do we know what apps even support promotion?

google chrome ?

You all do realize that 24 FPS is not the same as 24hz? One technology is flipping pictures at you 24 times a second while the other is refreshing the screen 24 times a second. Here's an article explaining it: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2379206,00.asp

Essentially unless the timing and synchronization of the content were perfect with 24 fps we would all hate 24HZ video these days.

The advantage of the higher refresh rate on the iPad isn't so it can play HD video better, rather it's for the animation capabilities of software. The screen should always look smoother and rock solid at the high rates. If you could do a slo-mo of the screen you would see it redraw every 1/60-1/120th of a second. Then the question would be how many frames does the software take to redraw its content.

So for a 24 fps movie to play like in a theater the screen would actually have to redraw at a faster rate just so our eyes would not notice a studded between frames.

Complicated the rule is to enjoy better stuff and not wish it was like the old days.

This is my experience. Comparing my Air 1 to my new Pro 10.5 while scrolling content in Safari, side by side, the scroll blur is barely any different between the two. If I didn't know the Pro was supposed to be better, I absolutely would have never noticed. I do notice the true tone (and love it), it does seem like the screen is closer to my fingertips, and even the brightness difference was pretty self evident. But ProMotion is pretty negligible, at least in Safari, and that's where I would most often want to read while scrolling.

As many people keep giving it such high praise, it makes me think mine isn't working right or something. I cannot see the hype. I'll have a make an Apple Store trip soon and do a side by side of my Pro vs some floor models.

Nonetheless, this was an amazing upgrade from my Air 1. I'm glad I waited and have no complaints. Just feeling left out of the ProMotion love bubble.

What about within a long list of items in iOS (e.g. in the Settings app)?

Oh good suggestion. Side by side scrolling that list, the difference actually is pretty obvious. Although I'm still not positive I would have ever consciously acknowledged that improvement, probably not until I went back to a device lacking it and wondered why it seemed so much less smooth. And even then, I might have ignorantly chalked it up to the faster processor.

But thanks. The settings list did a much better job of illustrating it to me. Needless Apple Store trip averted!

Just got the new iPad Pro and have to say the promotion screen makes the upgrade 100% worth it . It makes the screen look and feel amazing this is the best feature apple has added to the iPad in years in my opinion

I have the 10.5 ipp, but really cannot tell at all that there is an improvement via pro-motion. What's the best way to see it in action? My 10.5 ipp feels a tiny bit snappier than my 9.7, but nothing amazing. Side-by-side comparison is not impressive. What am I missing??

Not everyone is going to appreciate the difference. Same with Retina to non-Retina. Yep, it may be nuts to many of us that some people don't care/notice the difference, but those people exist.

I'd say if you don't notice the obvious speed difference in the CPU/GPU and the 120hz difference, return it. That's the main reason for buying the new Pros.

I noticed the difference straight away. It's unrealistically realistic if that makes any sense. I notice it on the springboard, settings menu, safari and the Tapatalk app make the biggest difference to me, vs my ipp 9.7.

Would you give an example in the speed difference between last year Pros and now? Maybe a game or app that takes long to open up or a website that takes awhile? I have last year’s 12.9 Pro, I want to see if there is an appreciable difference.

Upgrading from 9.7 is worth it for either new one, not sure 12.9 really is.
