You can run with both but with the speed of the slower one. If you buy 16 GB (8x2) put them like this 8:4:8:4. 24GB should be enough for normal chrome use

Both sets of RAM would have the same spec'd speed, just different sizes. So how would one be slower than the other?

"24GB should be enough for normal chrome use". "Normal Chrome use"? Not following you here.

Is that on OS Sierra do you know?

Yes in beta testing right now. Official public release is in 2017.

Congrats OP, while Apple is expected to roll out new models next month, it sounds like you didn't want to wait any longer.

Enjoy your new machine :)

Still don't follow the Chrome reference as it relates to having more RAM. I don't have the RAM now, I will be purchasing the RAM that is for the 2016 model not the 2015 model.

Chrome is so unoptomize that even 128GB of RAM is not enough. As time goes you see chrome using more RAM every minutes.
On MacBook it also consumes a lot of battery.

I got you. I only use Chrome if I need to playback something that requires Flash.

Hmm, not sure I'm following, Sierra is out now, is this an update to it we're talking about? Also, this being the case then as far as the OS is concerned it wouldn't matter whether or not it was a 1 or 2 TB Fusion drive, is that correct?

Thanks! I'm sure there are enhancements and I don't know exactly what the differences will be but if it's anything like the iPhone 6+ vs 7 then I don't mind. :D

If you bought the 1TB(24GB SSD) fusion drive give it back right now. It is slooooow. Go with the 2TB (128gb SSD)

I don't think we'll be seeing a huge difference between the 2015 model and the as of yet unreleased 2016 model. TB3, USB-C, maybe a better GPU. if you're not a gamer, then the latter won't matter too much.

The APFS (new Apple File System) is not officially released to the public yet for Sierra. It is undergoing beta testing right now. I am not sure how the conversion will work from HFS+ to APFS when the update comes out in 2017.

The RAM will be faster. Also the SSD might be faster and cheaper for the 2016 model.

yes if you don't want to keep this imac for more than 3-4 years than you are ok...because the future of I/O is usb-c/TB3

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I have it all setup and maybe it's more applicable to heavy app usage but for my needs 24GB SSD on the 1TB Fusion Drive will likely be enough, right now it boots up in around 15 seconds and GarageBand loaded up in just seconds which is really impressive to me, coming from my MBP it's like day and night.

Congrats on your new iMac. I just purchased a refurbished 3.2 GHz 27-inch iMac and it's great. I was in the same position as others deciding between purchasing an iMac now or waiting (hopefully to see cheaper refurbished Late 2015 iMacs), but I was also worried that the price of the new iMacs might go up in the UK when they are refreshed due to the sterling's falling value. I am surprised, but equally relieved, Apple has not increased prices here considering current exchange rates which aren't expected to change any time soon. Hopefully that will continue into next year (no price increases, that is ;))

Having come from a Mac mini, the performance of this iMac is perfect for my needs. I realise an update is likely around the corner, but I accepted the fact I won't have the most current iMac and perhaps at a slight premium versus refurbished prices in the near future. In the end it's still a very powerful iMac with great industrial design and will serve me well for years to come. And I think the difference in price will be marginal - I suspect they will only reduce the price of the refurbished model I purchased by about £50 after the new iMacs are released.

We bought this exact same model last week for work (print/design). It was deceptively fast on initial boot and benchmarking, but once I migrated all our Adobe applications over it slowed down considerably. I knew this was going to happen, so I had the boss buy a 256GB Transcend StoreJet 500 Thunderbolt SSD to boot from. He is cheap and went against my advice of getting an internal SSD installed. Then end cost was about the same, so I don't understand the logic. Anyway... it is better now with the external boot, but still does not feel as fast as my 2015 21.5" booting externally through USB 3.0. You might want to consider spending an extra $100 to do this in a few months. OS X is now too bloated and dependent on I/O to run from a spinning drive. For anything other than Web surfing, pure SSD is the only way to go for Apple machines from here on out.

You make a good case, appreciate the advice.

My MBP is about 6 years old and while it's still a decent machine, it's time for an upgrade. I know they're about to release a new one but spending $1900 on this years model with a 1 TB fusion drive seems like a pretty good deal. Looking forward to the huge screen, coming off the 15" MBP I'm sure it will be like night and day.

IMO, you should avoid the 1TB fusion drive. The whopping 24GB SSD will not do much to improve performance over a 5400 spinning disk. Pop for the 2GB SSD at a minimum.

Buying an iMac weeks before an imminent refresh is not the smartest move. You're paying 2016 dollars for 2015 hardware.

I'd recommend returning whatever you bought, waiting 3-6 more weeks, and then seeing where it takes you. If a new model is released, then you can spend 2016 dollars on 2016 hardware. Or you can save a bit on 2015 models.

If a new model is not released, then the 2015 model ages even further, and you should be able to find similar deals to what you already found.

Either way, it's certainly prudent to remain patient as a ~month isn't too long to wait for a better value.

To confirm, is there definitely a newer model iMac being released soon?

No one can say for 100% except Apple. However, if you can wait maybe 3 or so weeks, than I suggest you wait. In October is when Apple usually makes updates to the iMac. I initially pulled the trigger on a 2015 iMac but returned it so that I could see what Apple is going to do for 2016.

We should be able to know more in 2 weeks. Following iMac recent update history I would say yes (October 2014, October 2015). A small delay could be related to kabylake CPU.

I have been waiting for an issues free iMac for 3years. I hope they don't do anything stupid this year. I won't wait another year. After 9 years I am not happy with apple quality anymore. If they want to focus only on iOS and iPhone it is time to return to windows.
