I work in IT and my company often uses email in a real-time sort of way. It's not unusual for my boss to send something out and expect a response in 5 minutes. I don't think that's at all uncommon in the industry. I have a pretty aggressive set of server-side filters so that email that isn't important gets routed to different locations and doesn't notify me. If it hits my inbox, I need to know about it ASAP though.

hmm. so the speed is of essence, not long detailed content right? so why not something like a pager system, if that's so critical. you could use a pager, or use sms which has always been push, and very reliable, in my experience. if your company can afford it, they could have their own app and you and the boss could communicate over chat whose notifications would be push even on ios.

Yes, and I'm sure if I suggest that they'll get right on it :) bigger company, rapid change is not their strongest point.
