Few people have said that 3.1 couldn't be jailbroken. Most of us have been talking about unlocking baseband 05.11.07, which this does not do. The whole purpose of this is to allow you to upgrade without upgrading your baseband; those with 3.1 already installed or with new phones factory-installed with 3.1 are still out of luck for unlock for the foreseeable future (and perhaps forever).

You install ultrasn0w from Cydia, just like you did with 3.0.x

Yes, you can. But you will have to borrow a Mac or get someone to post a customized ipsw made on a Mac.

Never. PwnageTool is a mac-only application and always has been. But as I said right above, if you know someone with a Mac you can make an ipsw and use it on your PC; or you can look for customized ipsw files online. Be sure you trust your source, though.

Correct. Pwangetool as got the option to upgrade the baseband greyed out and not ticked. I upgraded. I didn't hacktivate. Installed Ultrasn0w and then stuck my Vodafone SIM in and get signal. Have made numerous phone calls today. Data works fine as well

winterboard wont work because of a mobilesubstrate issue, taken from saurik's twitter:

saurik MobileSubstrate 0.9.3043-1 fixes the issues some extensions (like WinterBoard) are having with the new dyld "shared cache" in iPhone OS 3.1. Link: http://twitter.com/saurik/status/4026438292

dumb question i know, but been so long since i last had to jailbreak... do i install 3.1 from itunes onto my iphone before jailbreaking or just download so i can make the custom ispw??
 
Did anyone restore new(or can you w/o updating) before JB or just install the new FW right over the old?
 
Quick question guys...I live in Greece, and got it from here, so the phone was factory unlocked. Do I choose yes or no when it comes to the question of activating the phone through itunes? Idiot me forgot which one I chose when I JB 3.0. I guess if I choose wrong, I can just restore and try it again.

Run Pwnage first and it will make a custom firmware for your phone. Once you have that you can use that to restore your phone to. I think upgrading will also work. Just alt + click on upgrade or restore to use the custom firmware.

one of the dev tem members has said keep your phone jailbroken to 3.0 or 3.0.1 (which ever yours is at) then build custom ipsw in pwnagetool and just hit restore in iTunes DO NOT use update

There are known vulnerabilities in the 3.1 firmware, so jailbreaking is/was only a matter of time. There are no known vulnerabilities in the 05.11.07 baseband, so there is no forseeable unlock for people unfortunate enough to have upgraded to or purchased with the new firmware. If an exploit can be found, I imagine it will be at least several months. And there is no guarantee that it will ever be unlocked.

I don't care so much about unlocking, I just care about jailbreaking. I have a 2G and a 3GS that will work for that.

BIG problem:

Last week, I upgraded my 3G to 3.1 and of course the baseband was upgraded.

I downgraded the phone to 3.0 and all was well and the iPhone was able to make calls.

I used the new Pwnage tool to jailbreak the phone and go back up to 3.1.

Phone is now unable to make phone calls, it just says network unknown and will not show my phone number. I guess I will have no choice but to either restore to 3.1 and not jailbreak or go back to 3.0 and be able to jailbreak.
 
Yesterday i got a problem with Winterboard causes by MobileSubstrate. Today MobileSubstrate is silent updated to version 0.9.3043-1 and comes through Cydia with the Winterboard package. Works like a charm!

Since you are using a Legit sim you need to make sure you DON'T check the Activate box when creating your IPSW in Pwnage tool. :) I did the same thing.

I assume you followed the instructions on downgrading as outlined here:http://www.saurik.com/id/12

I am still trying to figure this out on my Mac. Can't seem to find '/etc/hosts' anywhere.

That's the actual location... /etc/hosts

Open finder and then (I think, not on my mac) go to Go>Open Location and then type in /etc/ and it should open up the folder with the hosts file.

Or go to Terminal and type
Code: 
su root
nano /etc/hosts

OR I think with TextWrangler you can browse in the Open File dialog to /etc/hosts
 
can someone help me, the pwnage tool 3.1 does give me an option to create custom ipsw file! how do i create one?
