I Know this is an old topic but just wondering.

I have heard that the i7 (and I guess the high end i5 the same as the are both 91W chips) gets really warm and high revs with certain tasks.

Any of you guys playing recent games (Far Cry 5 and such) has experienced this type of issues?

i7 runs much hotter, I can't hear my cooling system spin on the i5 no matter what

i'd be surprised if a radeon-580 iMac didn't get noisy with games such as Rise of the tomb Raider at high settings. Mine certainly does, and it has an i5.
But other usages, like video encoding, don't trigger the fans.

Then again, it depends so much on what you are doing. If you have an i7 and you play a game with VSync on, your GPU probably won‘t run at 100 % and your CPU won‘t either. If you are deactivating VSync and producing 100+ frames per second (although your screen can only refresh 60 times per second), that‘s extra heat going to waste.

As for working (Handbrake, Final Cut, Logic - you name it), it‘s the same. Once you go max load, you‘ll see the difference.

On many games I use settings that yield less than 60 fps more often than not, so the CPU and/or GPU is at 100%. For instance, I watch dota 2 games at more than 4K and highest quality (yielding between 40 fps and 60 fps), and that makes the iMac hot.

Which gpu r u running? 575 or 580?

Which games
580, mostly total war series on internal monitor, while connected to a 1080p tv I played a lot of recent stuff, pubg, AC Origins, Battlefield 1 etcc.

I never heard the fan getting as loud as my previous imac with 780m on it, in order to hear it there must be silence and I need to peek my hear on the back of the mac.

100% Happy with it, well no, I wish it was closer to a GTX 1080 in terms of performance so I could run more games on the built in monitor but good enough since I also own a PS4 Pro and the gaming on the mac it's just a nice extra perk.

I have 580 and i5 3.8ghz, 40gb ram and I have played PUGB, CS, Company of heroes 2 and Northgard.

If I mute the sound then I can hear the fan a bit but not at a level that, at least I feel, is annoying. If you play with sound or with headphones then you can't hear anything.

I have already got 15” tbMbp with Radeon Pro 460. I also play games a lot on Mac and don’t want to build a Windows pc for it because ease of use is simply more delightful on Mac and I got calls on FaceTime a lot. I had a nice external monitor and rx580 Egpu setup, but that Egpu didn’t satisfy the performance I expected. Since I got iPad, I started not carrying my macbook to the university. Should I go for the top tier 27” iMac for the best gpu performance? Maybe 2018 model? How are the temps while gaming? Also does the i7 version get much hotter than i5 that affects the system performance?

That's really helpful to know, thanks a lot.

Does it get really hot? Do you think it could heat enough as to be a danger for other internal parts?

You're welcome.

I have only felt it a few times and then it is a bit hot but not a lot (When gaming). I don't think this amount of heat would be dangerous for the internal parts but as for all machines I guess then it depends on the amount of times it get hot and if it is for a long period of time.

Again thanks, I think I might end up going for the 580 or whatever the new 2018 equivalent is, just so that runs a few games faster and can run games from the next couple of year, while not max out at least let me play.

I hate that on the top level one you need to go straight for a 512 SSD, I could do with a 256 (I manage with a 128 on my laptop), what I find silly is how on the mid tier one you can change the 1 TB fusion for a 512 for the same price, you can change a 2TB fusion for a 512 on the top tier. One would think the 2TB fusion would be slighlty expensiver than the 1TB

That is what I thought as well when considering what model that I wanted to go for, to have a computer that is gonna last for some time and be able to play some of the newer games in the future, bought mine in the start of this year.

I think in the long run you will be more happy with the 512gb SDD, it fills up quickly :)

If you already have a nice external monitor get a proper Windows machine. If you want elegant get a Corsair One... 11GB GTX 1080 Ti will run rings around the iMacs AMD

Well, the 2017 i7 has been out over a year now and I have not heard of a single instance of heat-related problems, just complaints from people pushing full loads who are sensitive to fan noise.

I built a mini itx system last summer with a Ryzen cpu and GTX1080 inside. It was glorious for games. However, that was too luxurious for me both having a top spec 15" MacBook Pro and a beast gaming pc. As I said, macOS is useful and necessary for me. I can't build a whole computer just for the times I play games. So, I sold it lately. Actually I don't need that much gpu power also. I play blizzard games, and some non AAA title games on Steam. Probably dying light is the most demanding title I play.

That’s good, this computer is actually on my to-buy list. But I want to make sure it can serve as Hackintosh.

Anything doesn’t work? Is it hard to get audio / Wifi working properly?

You did that via Clover?

I grabbed that image from google but I do know someone who has it running via unibeast. I think wifi was the main issue with it.

I don't have benchmarks for that eGPU on that Macbook Pro but my hunch is you probably need a better GPU than iMac's current offering to justify a jump if you are thinking long term but if you don't need the Macbook at all then then it's possible it makes sense to make the jump to the iMac but your losing a bit of money either way by making all of these switches. Depending on what you need to do in MacOS just getting a KVM switch and a barebones Windows gaming PC might not be that much different in price when you start to factor in money spent on upgrading Apple machines.
