I'm sure this has already been answered on another threat, but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I have an iPhone 6, and I installed the iOS 10 beta on it for a preview yesterday, but I noticed that the raise to wake feature isn't working at all.

Has it been confirmed that this feature is only going to be for the 6s and up? Or is it just a bug for beta 1?

Thanks!

The iPhone 6S users apparently were complaining that the updated Touch ID was "too fast" allowing the phone to open up rather quickly for you to read notifications. I believe and from what I've seen in posts, it is an exclusive feature only for the 6S.

It may possibly make it, but I doubt it in the GM. It is sad that they support the 5 still on iOS 10 and the 6 gets to take a back seat in most of these features (except 3D touch for obvious reasons).

It's only available on the following devices: iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone SE

It's not related to the Touch ID hardware, as to why those are the only phones that have it. The SE model does not have the second generation Touch ID hardware. It has the same hardware as the 6 and 6 Plus.

It's because those three phones have the newest M9 motion coprocessor.

It makes absolutely no sense for them to not be on older iPhones, at least all the way down to the iPhone 5s because they all have motion co-processors.

I think it has to do that the iPhone 6s has the "always-on" M9 motion co-processor, which allows this functionality while also being battery efficient.

Im not sure what is so hard here.

S line and SE have the M9 always on coprocessor. Older models do not. Clearly a hardware choice.

If they turned the older ones on all the time then you would have the whiners complaining about battery life. Same reason older phones Hey Siri, which uses the coproceesor, only works plugged in. Battery drain.

Has to be some line. Done issue.

Anyone tried to test if it's only waking when raised or accidentally when on your hip or in your pocket?

Did you know? iPhone 5S/6/6Plus has a always on(when the phone is on sleep) embedded motion processor (m7 and m8) ? It can track ur steps, distance and floors(m8) even when the phone is on sleep.

M9 chip has a only difference and its always on microphone. In this feature we dont need microphone.

Explain us, this motion coprocessor's how could measure -even phone's get turned off while they're locked -our steps, floors and distance ?

I'll tell you.

Step counter in the health application uses the gyroscope, accelerometer, gps and other sensors to detect if you are walking.

What does this mean?

This means m7 and m8 motion coprocessors works phones get turned off while they're locked.

We need always-on Gyroscope or Accelerometer for this and we already have both of them.

Yes, we can run the gyro etc constantly even when the display off.

Remember that Apple developed that motion coprocessor for improve battery life and this coprocessor always works even when the display off. If this coprocessor does not work on display off then it couldn't count our steps. But it can count.

And on the power save mode iPhone's step counter doesnt work. Because we are disabling that sensors for better battery life.

If we are still worried about battery then we can turn it off. Like battery saver mode. But its not about battery.

I believe Apple must get this feature to m7 and m8 devices.

If Apple cant get this feature, I could lose my loyalty.

Me and this m7 and m8 device owners can say that;
Its about planned obsolescence.

I like the idea of raise to wake but why I have to press the button to unlock, like is called Touch ID for god sake. With the new lock screen you don't have to press it one but twice :(

No you don't. Just press it once and leave your finger there until it jumps to the home screen, the same as Touch ID has always worked.

What's changed in iOS 10 is that you can now unlock your phone and stay on the lock screen. There is a lock symbol next to the time in the status bar that disappears when your phone is unlocked.

Both iPad Pro's have the M9. I know the 12.9" doesn't have Raise to Wake (doesn't even have always on Hey Siri either despite having the M9) But what about the 9.7" Pro? It has always on Hey Siri. Does it include Raise to Wake?

Doesn't the 6 have an always-on motion co-processor? If not, how can it record the # of steps and flights climbed when the phone is in sleep mode?

Touch ID now press ID

As mentioned it's no different just in reverse so people can utilize their lock screen without using the sleep/wake button then Touch ID but Instead use the home button (which is what everyone does anyway).

It does, people are just making ill informed comments. The distinguishing feature of M9 is that it's hooked up to the mic so always on Siri is possible. But M7 and M8 have always on motion processing, that was the original point of them.

To be a bit more clear, the M9 is built onto the chip now where the M7 and M8 were separate. Hey Siri was possible before but only plugged in. Likely a power issue and the M9 built into the chip itself solves this somehow.

Bottom line regardless, it appears by all accounts to be a hardware limitation.

I dont represent to know anything about the logistics. i would suspect Anandtech or someone like that would be more equipped to answer that.

With the 12.9 screen it could be a matter of left out of the software for battery purposes since it already struggles to match the 9.7 battery life as is. My understand is the IPP 12.9 does Hey Siri plugged in which suggest a power choice

Cannot say on the 9.7 raise to wake- no ipad here.

I love the raise to wake because there are times where my Apple watch is of my arm and my phones is on the desk.. If I receive a notification, I'll raise my iPhone to look and determine whether or not to respond or delete. Also for 6S/6S Plus users, Touch ID 2.0 is still part of that iPhone. A quick tap and press, your in the homescreen in less the 3 sec's

Inside or outside whatever. Its not the point.

In any case(sleep or wake), OS can access this motion data's.

Could you say this?
My iPhone 5S/6/6Plus doesnt count my steps, distance and floors(m8) in my pocket.

You cant say this.

Your iPhone get turned off while they're locked. How can count your activities?

Because this coprocessor's always works until the power saving mode. Power saving mode turns to sensor's idle mode and spends so little energy.

So what we have?

We have always-on motion coproccessor's qualified enought for this job M7 and M8)

What we dont have?

OS support. (Yet) Its just a developer beta 1. Hopefully Apple adds this feature to iPhone 6/6 Plus next beta's. Because Apple still selling this devices and this devices was not obsolete.

I got confirmation that even the 9.7" iPad Pro that has M9 and has Always On Hey Siri does not have Raise to Wake. So it would seem like perhaps it's just not fully enabled yet in this Developer Preview 1 build for other devices.
