The difference between buying an option and paying for a subscription to activate hardware already in the car is beyond Apples and Oranges.
Probably coming to a “smart tv” near you soon: either pay a subscription fee or we will push advertising to your screen- even when you’re just watching something from your own collection. Within a year that will just be the only option. They might even push it as a firmware update to existing TV’s.

It just takes one “brave” smartphone company to do the same.

just like the “not-included-charger” they all want to do it. They’re just waiting for someone to make the first move.

People keep posting that as if it is some sort of genius insight that nobody understands.

People here are also free to criticise Apple if they don’t like their policies.
Nah, that is baby talk, and I am rather surprised it comes through as genius. Maybe I did strike the target group after all 👍

Bash them as much as you like. This IS a designated Mac Mini M4 sob thread, Mac owners or not.

I think the base model is fine. And plenty of others do. Apple already figured out the optimal price to sell/start the pricing ladder. Some people will be annoyed, as always. They’ll sell plenty, and everything will be fine.
Don’t be annoyed at Apple, be annoyed at people like me who will buy it at this price.

That's really what it boils down to. I hate the upsell pricing too, but not enough to spend my money elsewhere. Apple's not stupid.

Even the OP went on a rant about this and then bought an M4 Mini anyway. None of this is new - if you're gonna start a thread about the very same thing everyone's been complaining about for decades, at least change it up a bit. Go buy an Intel/AMD NUC, install Linux on it, and let us all know how it went!

As an example:

Mercedes might charge $500 for heated seats.
Kia might charge $100 for heated seats.

Do you post this way on the Mercedes forum, or do you accept that Mercedes simply charges more because they can?

You can want more for less all you want, but that won't change the price of eggs.
On the other hand, commenting about how useless it is to comment doesn't really help either.

This is the most cynically, yet correct, post I have seen in quite some time. Really great job! (And I am there with you. I see a $799 16/512 M4 Mini in my future.)

Perhaps outrageous not blaming Apple for it, but I`d prefer M series all USB C hardware for that too ;)

The remaining code making it swell should be rather easy to fix:
"Siri": "Make this Linux kernel work with M4 and add compiling instructions"

I'll raise you another, good sir! This is what I put in my Windows laptop. SK hynix actually makes the NANDs for some of the bigger brands. It's not some sketchy bargain brand. 2TB for $135
Hynix is an Apple supplier. They have been providing SSDs and RAM to Apple for decades. They don’t have the name brand that Samsung has in the West, but they are some of the highest quality parts around.

I don’t believe that you do anything out of the kindness of your heart. Why would you do it if there nothing in it for you?
I’m confused about your question. I think people sometimes do things out of kindness of their hearts, but not corporations.

The CEO has a legal duty to shareholders to put their interests above his own. Sometimes people get upset because a corporation appears to be greedy, but that’s what the corporation is supposed to do. However, the CEO is also trying to improve the public image of the corporation. A common method is corporations will encourage their employees to donate. It doesn’t cost the corporation and it gives them free advertising.

All this makes it sound like I’m cynical, but I’m really not. I’m just a realist.

Does it really matter if I donate because I feel guilty about something I did or because I have joy in my heart? Does it matter if Apple donates because it’ll he mentioned on Good Morning America giving them free advertisement or because Tim Cook woke up overjoyed. I don’t think it does because the outcome is the same. The charity gets serious help that they really need.

I have been using Linux for a long time, but i cant pretend that they have the desktop market in any meaningful way.
Heck, 30 years after and its still hovering around 2-3 %.

How bad is it?

Like this:

Boss: lets release our latest Creative Cloud on Linux!
Dev: Cool, which way would you like it created, RPM, Deb, AppImage, FlatPack, Snap, Tar or give them the source code and let them compile it themselves?
Boss: never mind, let’s continue with exe and dmg.
Do you know why it’s like this? It’s because there’s no incentive to make it better because no one’s going to profit from it. Sure the people that use it could get together with major software developers and make things more compatible but why. The logic is what’s in it for me. If that’s nothing other than a better operating system for everyone else then it doesn’t work. I love the concept of Linux, but it’s never going to become a mainstream desktop operating system, unless someone puts major corporate funding into it.

MS is giving Linux the keys to the kingdom with the mess that Win 11 is, but Linux is still not ready.
I totally agree it’s a mess but it functions and I can game on it without any issues. I despise Microsoft as a company, but that’s just my feelings.

Love the excuses saying “just get external storage”.

Thats just wrong on a desktop computer.
How is external storage wrong on a desktop computer? I could see if you said a laptop because it’s annoying to carry around an external hard drive but on a desktop it just sits there. That’s where external storage shines.

Again, i dont understand why people side with a trillion dollar company and furiously attack other consumers that simply want more for their money.
I don’t think people are siding with the company because they’re not agreeing with you. People are happy with the product and understand how the pricing structure works. I don’t agree with attacking anyone because they want more for their money. I actually support that concept. If you want more for your money, then buy the product that gives you more for your money. If enough people feel the price is unfair and stop buying it, Apple will see this downturn in sales and lower the price. If you’re just complaining about the price, but still buying the product then nothing will change.

Having read many recent Mac mini posts (not many Mac tasks are more irresistible than reading what others think of it), I'm pretty certain that if the $599 base came with 16/512 the same arguments would still exist because nobody would believe it wasn't a devious trick to get them to pay more the next level up.

The cynicism would be understandable, but I think if that did come to pass, people would be genuinely speechless.

Apple obviously have a load of telemetry data about their customers' Mac usage, and will have got SSD sizing down to a fine art (albeit capacities are a factor of 2). The issue with 256GB is that for many people, its too small to completely contain the OS, application resources, cloud storage files and the like. If supplementing with an external disk, it leads to to a messy split of actively-used stuff. And whilst you can boot completely from a (large) external SSD, Apple Intelligence, ApplePay and the like is blocked when doing so.

512GB - and certainly 1TB - would likely cover the day-to-day needs of a large percentile of Mac users. Most of us have a relatively small amount of actively-used files, so if faced with high storage costs, it would be easy enough to move the bulky-but-stand-alone stuff (the Photos library, movie folders, game installs etc.) to an external disk, avoiding the Apple Tax.

There is a solution to your problem. Don't buy the mini, or anything else from Apple. Vote with your dollars.
Agreed. On the desktop there are better machines available for my needs, and I have voted with my dollars. I voted five years ago, and the current OS is supported until 2029. I suspect the next OS revision will also run on that machine.

For an Air type laptop there is not yet an alternative to the Air. Hopefully Qualcom or AMD will put out a really good laptop chip by the time I need to replace this M1.

If you are talking about the Windows environment, the Surface products are very much comparable to the MacBook Air. I have a Surface laptop and found it just as capable as the Air, maybe not as fast as it is older. The Surface is light, looks good in black, runs W11 Pro without issues, along most of the Windows productivity programs. If you don't like Apple, want an Air like machine, consider the Surface Laptop.

As well as MS, Google and almost all of Silicon Valley.

Most people selling RAM specifically for Apple devices recommend them (which is how I found them). Been buying their stuff for over a decade.

So you’re buying a machine where a lot of effort was put into the design and ensuring a minimalistic, clean desk experience. And you then add some random looking external disk, dangling from it.

Mind you- we’re not asking for +12 TB storage like in a NAS. Just a reasonably priced TB or two or the option to upgrade it yourself.

I really hate that I now have an extra disc dangling from my iMac. The speed is slower, it can get unplugged by mistake, it takes up a port and it’s ugly.

So….you really, truly believe that the nands used by apple are really worth 200 bucks per each 256 gb?

Yikes….

But lets say that there is a possibility that you are either trolling or being a fake white knight, here is another one with better reviews and perhaps a better brand.

That’s still junk

Comparison would be wd black or Samsung

No Windows allowed here. :) The server just got converted to Linux, the desktop main PC was always Linux, the shop music player/reference_PDF_reader/web searcher is Linux. The stereo cabinet is still Monterey (2014 mini) and this laptop is Sequoia. When the iPod dies the stereo cabinet will go to Linux too.

Well, that's how they get you. Pony up or spoil the clean minimalism. They could obviously use internal NVMe drives, but that's not in their interests.

The only thing macOS currently does not have are some of the more popular games like Call of Duty and Fortnite. There are ways around this of course like with GeForce Now but that is an additional service.

I dont understand why Apple doesn’t try to really go for market share and instead it’s complacent in abusing their loyal customers.
The same reason that BMW doesn't want to sell to Ford Escort buyers. The profits are all in the high-end consumer market, not in the price conscious volume market. The volume market brings the unwashed masses to sink the ship. Apple's business model is to chase profits, not people.
