Steve Jobs was very clear on this matter.

“We’ve been innovating like crazy for the last few years on this, and we filed for over 200 patents for all the inventions in iPhone, and we intend to protect them...I think we’re advancing the state of the art in every aspect of this design. So iPhone is like having your life in your pocket. It’s the ultimate digital device.”

“Our lawsuit is saying, “Google, you ****ing ripped off the iPhone, wholesale ripped us off.” Grand theft. I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go to thermonuclear war on this. They are scared to death, because they know they are guilty. Outside of Search, Google’s products—Android, Google Docs—are ******.”

"And Boy Have We Patented It"

Samsung decided to poke the bull anyway, and they got gored and trampled.

This is the shot heard around mobile world. Dont steal from Apple...all while MSFT and Nokia are laughing at Samsung and HTC .

Yep, Apple still won. Samsung owes over 1 billion dollars, Apple owes nothing. This didn't surprise me at all. Whether Samsung did it knowingly or not, it's clear that their devices greatly resemble the iPhone. It was obvious Apple wasn't fooling around. They have patents and intend on protecting them.

Like I said, this will be in appeal for years. And when Google takes Apple to court over patent infringement, karma will be complete. You can expect Apple to be fined billions for willfully and knowingly copying Google's (patent pending) Notification Center and it is all thanks to the precedent set by Apple here in this very case. Mark my words, Google will cite this very case.

Of course, that will be in appeal for years too, only difference is Apple continues to utilize a stolen idea in all versions of iOS and now, even on Macs. If Apple is found guilty, the verdict today is gonna look like chump change.

Why are you quoting Steve talking about Google? This case had nothing to do with Google or Android. This was Apple going after its only competition the only way it could. Nothing more.

Riiighhhtt...

And who else is Apple suing for making a rounded, black rectangle that is currently kicking the crap out of Apple in sales? Oh yeah, no one. If HTC had been the successful company, you can be rest assured that Apple would have gone after them. Apple's only goal here was simply to slow its only competition.

LOL...Apple didnt innovate most of their stuff. They just took something that wasnt patented from someone else , made it better and patened it themselves.

All this BS is really nothing but a pain in the ass for the consumer.

Samsung needing to fork over 1 billion wont put a dent in their bottom line. It was already announced three days ago they are going to spend 4 billion to boost output of smart processors in Texas used in phones and such and as we all know, they have a big hand in Apples phones and tablets and their own and need more capacity to help keep up.

In April, Samsung announced it would spend $7 billion building a semiconductor factory in China to satisfy growing demand for mobile devices.

They arent hurting and this victory wont slow then down a bit. But it just might hurt the consumer since these lawsuits seem to keep coming back around. All it did was give posters who have no clue to say things like "Samsung copied Apple, i told you so".. Yeah so what?, Apple copies too!

Well-deserved win for Apple. Android copies certain things from iOS, and vice versa, but Samsung just made clones. Hopefully this will put them in their place and spark some innovation.

Hi all!

Well, what a kick in the crotch for SS eh?

Ahhh!! I am very divided on my feelings about this one. I feel that these patent wars can't be good for us in the long run. Now that Apple owns the rounded or rectangle shape for a phone, were doomed to see phones that are round or oval??? Disregard the practical nature of the shape and now that Apple has moved away from the initial iPhone design to the glass rectangle brick, is that shape patented too??

OK the reason I can't feel anything other than OUCH for Samsung is these 3 facts:

1) It did take Apple a few years to design and produce the first iPhone and Samsung less than 3 months after to release their "new and innovative design change".

2) There was some hella damning evidence in court that went against Samsung, ie design crisis, make it more like iPhone etc.

3) Apple offered to licence the patents to Samsung who refused.

Where this leaves us as the consumer, I am not certain.

One poster in a forum relating to this did make a valid point though. Trial by Jury does not require Apple to prove that their patents are valid, they only have to convince the Jury that Samsung violated them.

I think there is some room to investigate the practicality of some of the patents that Apple holds: ie: rounded square icons.

I also can't help but feel that the trial was biased to begin with. I am not saying that Samsung DIDN'T copy some of Apples patents etc, but when they were forbidden to present evidence to the court and what can I say, it just felt like Judge Koh really had her mind made up in the first place. American Jury, American Company, American Court system. Isn't it odd that not ONE of Samsung's patents was recognized in this case?

Nice try spinning the subject, but the main issue is that Samsung's smartphone sales exceeded Apple's smartphones sales this year.

Samsung sold more smartphones in the first three months of the year than Apple and raked in more than 70 per cent of its operating profit from mobile businesses.

After narrowly beating Apple last year, Samsung's smartphone sales exceeded Apple's by a large margin in the first quarter. Strategy Analytics said Samsung became the world's top smartphone maker, selling 44.5 million handsets in the January-March period, followed by Apple's 35.1 million.
http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/mobiles/samsung-beats-apple-smartphone-sales-20120427-1xq29.html

And that's why Apple brought Samsung into the courtroom.

Lots of flag waving and chest thumping. Will be a shame when the only smart phone one can buy in the US is a $699 phone from an American company. Innovation won't even reach North American shores, there will be no competition, prices will rise and the US will get small advancements on the same old same old while looking on enviously while the rest of the world advances.

Pretty funny (not meaning anyone on here specifically) how many think it's like Samsung is going to exactly write a check for 1B to Apple (nevermind that biggest chunk of that money won't even go towards them). Please, this will be tied up in Appellate court for years to come and will pry be 1/4 of the amount when said and done. When Google presses ahead with their patent collection against Apple, samething will happen. Apple could easily lose against that, fined, and tied up in appeals for years and so on and so on... just another day in the corporate world, business 101. There's a few things that I agree with on the patents, but others that should have never been granted b/c for one there's a huge white/black interpretation since quite a few of those patent weren't even specific (goes for other companies as well). Just another showing at how poorly setup our patent system is which needs a complete overhaul.

Notice how Apple barely could give a rats ass before, but was only in the last year or so. Why? B/c in the last year or so was when Android device (especially GSII) directly challenged iOS in sales, as well as becoming a top notch OS with tons of flexibility (personally before I got my GSII I would have never bought an Android device). Their threatened plain and simple, however you can't really blame Apple either b/c of our flawed patent system laying the groundwork that gives Apple the legal right to do so, any other company would exploit those loopholes giving them an advantage. If tables were turned, Samsung would have done the same exact thing.

Wasn't Steve Jobs famous for following the mantra, "Good artists copy. Great artists steal."

Here's the video that includes the "we've been shameless about stealing great ideas." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CW0DUg63lqU

Ha, love the double standard, which trickles down to its "fans" like Technarchy and his ilk. They live in an amazing world. :)

Yeah, Jobs was a hypocrite and kinda of a douche when it dont fit his own criteria. Had to have Gates bail him out back in 97 i think it was.

Oops, you failed at quoting and put a false spin on Steve's words. Let's not mislead anyone here.

Here's what Steve Jobs *really* said:

"Ultimately it comes down to taste. It comes down to trying to expose yourself to the best things that humans have done and then try to bring those things in to what you're doing.*

I mean Picasso had a saying he said good artists copy great artists steal. And we have always been shameless about stealing great ideas and I think part of what made the Macintosh great was that the people working on it were musicians and poets and artists and zoologists and historians who also happened to be the best computer scientists in the world.

The only problem with Microsoft is they just have no taste, they have absolutely no taste, and what that means is - I don't mean that in a small way I mean that in a big way. In the sense that they they don't think of original ideas and they don't bring much culture into their product and you say why is that important - well you know proportionally spaced fonts come from type setting and beautiful books, that's where one gets the idea - if it weren't for the Mac they would never have that in their products and so I guess I am saddened, not by Microsoft's success - I have no problem with their success, they've earned their success for the most part. I have a problem with the fact that they just make really third rate products".

Steve was talking about innovation.
