I just received my new Mac Pro 2.8GHz 8-Core from Apple yesterday with default configuration (dual quad 2.8GHz/2GB/320GB). Mac OSX version is 10.5.2.

Ran the test six times as per the instructions in the README.rtf file on Photoshop CS3 10.0.1. Timed it on a Casio G-Shock stopwatch -- starting the stopwatch and action (after the pop up message) at the same time then stopping it immediately when the Complete pop-up dialog came up.

Run # Duration
1 - 28.21s
2 - 24.12s
3 - 24.16s
4 - 23.74s
5 - 23.82s
6 - 23.55s

I just received my additional 12GB ram from OWC, so I will install it as per OWC recommendations, then run it again tonight to see if there's any improved performance. I'll also try the test on my 2.2GHz MBP w/4GB ram + 200GB 7200rpm Hitachi HD. I'll post my results later.

Johnny

Okay, I just ran it on the MacBook Pro 2.2Ghz 15" upgraded to 4GB ram and 200GB 7200rpm hard drive using same test method as my previous post.

MBP is running Mac OSX 10.4.11 and the same version of CS3 as my Mac Pro.

I only ran it 4 times this time since it takes a little bit longer.

Run # - Duration
1 - 53.45s
2 - 50.37s
3 - 50.63s
4 - 50.31s

I'm actually pretty happy that the MBP yields some respectable results considering it's just a Core 2 Duo, weighs tons less than the MacPro, and is soooo much smaller.

Now... time to upgrade the memory in the MacPro...

After adding the additional 12GB of OWC memory in the Mac Pro (now 14GB total), I'm only seeing a very very small improvement with the speed test.

Here are the results now with 14GB of ram in the Mac Pro...

Run # - Duration
1 - 26.23s (the first run always seems to be the slowest... this is immediately after restarting the computer)
2 - 23.78s
3 - 22.77s
4 - 23.30s
5 - 23.07s
6 - 22.83s

Johnny

After seeing the results of my new MacPro 8-Core compared to my MacBook Pro, I was curious to see how long it would take on my Dell desktop PC.

The system is a Dell Dimension E510 running Windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP2 with 2GB ram. CPU is a Pentium 4 3.0GHz w/HT technology. Photoshop version is CS2 version 9.0.

I only ran it twice since it was so slow... again, I used this same test method as I did with the MP and MBP.

Run # - Duration
1 - 3m 09.62s
2 - 3m 19.33s

No wonder I never doing any photoshop work on that thing anymore!!!

Fair enough. I just remember reading that guys webpage about OSX being faster than Windows (Though i don't think he ever specified which version of windows he used), i'm running a Q6600 @ 3.4, 4GB ram @ 1063mhz, and a slower 250GB 7200rpm hardrive under Vista64, and getting 18 seconds?

Maybe it isn't the pig slow hog afterall!

I'm still trying to get Leapord to work on this machine. It's proving a little tricky to say the least, even with all the recent osx86 advances. They solve some problems and i just run into others! I'l report back when i've got it working, run it again and see what the difference is (if any!)

try the latest kalyway distro. should end your problems. also check out insanelymac forums:cool:

i must admit that i didnt bother to restart or close other apps lol.

Tried it, like i say, solved some problems, ran into others! Still can't get past the dreaded "Please restart your computer" screen. I think it may be a problem with my 8800GT, but i dont have anything else sat around to check with.

which mb are you using ?

did you try the nvject and natit drivers ?

do you have an older graphics card, it is probably the problem, though efi 8 should have it working.

You have PM, best we keep this thread on topic.

28 seconds on my $1,000 hackintosh (quad core). Only ran it once, though.

How is the stability on that thing?? Are you able to update your OS normally?? Or you will have to wait for a patch to be released before you can do any update??

:)

It is perfectly stable. It has not crashed in the 5 weeks that I've had it. The only updates I don't do immediately are the system updates (e.g., 10.5.2 -> 10.5.3). They often replace Library files that are necessary for using non-Apple components (e.g., video cards, audio drivers, etc.). I'll wait a couple of more weeks before making the migration to 10.5.3. All other software updates, including those from Apple, have installed fine with Software Update app.

Genghis, I see you have 4Gb on your iMac 2.16. I have the same Mac but thought it was limited to 3Gb. I'd be happy to be proven wrong and upgrade: any link to such info?
Thanks!!

Dr, I have the same rig. The mbp is not limited to 4g, but it's the adobe programs that won't address more then 3gb, at least that's what I understand. It does help to have 4gb for example if you are using Photoshop, and then want to do other things as well. Cheers,
Coocoo

I read about this photoshop theoretical 3 Gb limit. But I was talking about the hardware limitation of that model of Mac. When you buy memory in some sites you first select your model and it tells you what is the maximum RAM that model can be upgraded to. And it seemed the white 2.16 max ram was 3Gb. Very confusing...

Nothing confusing at all. The chipset of pre-Santa Rosa Intel Macs will only recognize 3.3 GBs. It has nothing to do with Photoshop.

As eXan has already said, pre Santa Rosa models could only recognise 3.3GB of RAM. However as the iMac and MacBook only have two RAM slots, you need 4GB to get that maximum RAM.

I'm not sure about the Photoshop RAM limit thing, but the maximum amount of RAM I can set my Macs to use is 2.7-ish GB (both are pre Santa Rosa), which points at a total 3.3GB used (as Leopard needs 0.5GB)

I ran the test according to the instructions (history states = 1, Cache level = 4, memory usage 100%).
Time: 7 min 20 sec

Dual 800 MHz G4
1.12 MB SDRAM
Dual 60 GB IBM hard drives (stock with that machine at the time) -- one with apps, OS, the other, with about 51 GB free space, as scratch disk.
Standard video card available at the time (GeForce2 TwinView)
CS3
OS X 10.4.11

Might be time for a new Mac

67 Seconds. MPB 2.33 4GB ram 7200RMP HD. This one time, without a restart and while browsing on Firefox3, itunes and ichat all going at the same time, in spaces.
