Sorry to hear your experience was crappy. Hope you are able to resolve this.
Although I have always done an in-person trade in the past (Apple Store or AT&T), I went ahead and sent my iPhone 11 in via the UPS package Apple sent. I received an email within 24-48 hours indicating "Your trade in is a success!".
Sounds like I lucked out.
I must admit, if I had seen a forum such as this before I mailed it, I would likely have traded it in in person.
Best of luck, keep us posted...

Nice, glad yours was accepted. I also traded in my wife’s 12 mini and that went through without an issue.

You certainly sound disappointed, and I don’t blame you. From the standpoint of the receiving company, I’m sure they are bombarded with phones with user damage where the user claims there was no damage when they sent it in. This is the world we live in — the honest people pay the price while the dishonest continue to abuse the system.

I think the answer might be insurance — in this case, a monthly AppleCare policy to prevent this scenario in the future. It sounds like you might be upgrading again next year. I’ll be upgrading each year myself, and the monthly $10 insurance seems like a good and inexpensive benefit for peace of mind.

Yeah for sure, AppleCare is nice to have when there’s an issue. I seemingly didn’t have an issue, at least one that is catchable by the human eye. I guess I should have run my phone through some sort of display/system diagnostic like an OBD2 scanner but for my iPhone prior to shipping it out LOL.

It’s really weird because when I purchased my 13PM the Apple store said they don’t do in store trade ins. When I went to pick up the new phone they did they trade in right then and there!
Same here.. traded in my iPad for the new one ( even though I was initially informed I'd have to mail it in... ) at the store w/o any issues!

I just ordered my 13 yesterday. When I get it I'm heading to the local Apple store and try to trade it in there. They didn't have what I wanted at the store but they said if they did they could have done the trade right there. Time will tell.

My wife just upgraded her 12 PM to a 13 PM. Email said nothing about in store but we asked if we could and they had to get us another Apple Genius to process the iUP trade in but we were able to here in California.

Traded in a 12Pro by mail. Full credit no issues. But aren’t all 12’s under warranty still? They have not been out a year. So have them return it and go to a store. On the other hand, I traded and old iPad mini and FedEx seems to have misplaced it. Apple is “investigating”. Also did two trade in in stores of two other iPads, that was easy. They ran diagnostics and issued a gift card right there and then.

Traded in my fully functional, perfect condition, 12 PM. Received a notification today that there is a revised trade in value taking the value from $790 to $310! The comment states “Display has functional issues (lines, flicker, pixel damage)” which was simply not the case when I had possession of it. I’ve called Apple and opened a case stating exactly that. I’m sure this happens all the time, but I’m certain that the display had no damage or issues whatsoever. The phone was in like new condition and I’m the type of person who keeps their tech in great shape.

I might just be venting a bit at this point, but this is nonsense. Does anyone have experience with this? Will Apple adjust the value and make this right based on my phone call to them? I took photos of me packaging up my trade but this all just seems like a bit of a scam. If I reject the trade and they ship my phone back, am I going to receive a defective phone even though it was pristine when I shipped? Hopefully this works out because I’m feel deflated and won’t be able to enjoy my new 13 PM until this is resolved 😬.

That's really frustrating, and I'm not sure how to handle it. I'd heard of Apple's partners doing this in the past (I think there was an article here about it). When I traded in my iPad by mail, I took photos of it as I packed it away so they couldn't claim physical damage. It wouldn't have saved me from this though-- I'm not sure how to capture proof that the screen worked flawlessly before I shipped it in. I could video the screen or something, I guess, but...

There has to be a level of trust for these systems to work, and experiences like this break down that trust.

Enjoy the new 13PM though. Don't let them take that joy from you. I can't think of anything you could have been expected to do differently. People are saying trade-in in store, but doing it by mail is encouraged and far more convenient.

I got my 13 pro on 9/24. Took my 12 pro to local Apple store at the mall and traded in. $640 showed up on my account today — 24 hrs later.
I initially marked my 12 pro as trade in during online purchase of the 13 pro.
no question asked. Glad I didn’t send mine.

I avoid all the scenarios mentioned here and just sell a private party through Facebook marketplace. I got $850 for my iPhone 12 pro max 256gb. I would have sold it for more but I thought Apple was going to pull that $520 max trade-in like they did last year. If I knew they were going to do $790 trade-in value I would’ve sold my phone for closer to 1000 bucks. Oh well. By the way my phone sold the same day I put the ad. Probably because I sold it cheap

I also keep my future trade-ins in great shape. No scratches or damage, new out of the box and into a sturdy iPhone case. So far, Apple has given me my full trade in value for my Macs, iPhones (including my iPhone 12 Max) and iPads. The only company that eventually didn't give me full value was Amazon and they sent my phone back. Kayak has also given me full stated value.

Side note to Apple trade in value: I've heard that online trade in (what I've been doing) has a bigger tax hit, and in store is less. Why that is, I don't know, but that's another reason to go in store (if possible in a Covid-19 world).

Even if the iPhone has suddenly developed a screen issue, it’s a model that has been out less than 12 months at this point and they should be fixing it under warranty and giving you the full amount for the trade in. I know the consumer laws in the US are pretty rubbish compared to Europe, but a standard 1 year warranty should still apply. That’s a massive reduction in price and I would not be accepting that. I would also be pushing the fact the phone has developed a fault in their possession, therefore they should also be liable. Good luck.

Well said. I’ve learned a lot about this 3rd party company that Apple uses for trade-ins and it seems there is a massive disconnect between Phobio and Apple. I’m pretty disappointed that Apple outsources this service and in turn screws their customers. Seems very anti-Apple as I’ve always had great customer service with this company going back to my first purchase in the early 2000’s.

If my 12PM screen has a defect, then so be it. I certainly didn’t notice an issue and to my eyes it was 100% in great shape without a nick or a scratch. In theory, Apple should repair the “defect” under warranty!

In a effort to relax some I received this yesterday.

I traded in my iPhone 12 pro max and 12 but both in store.
This time they have some diagnostic test going on and I had to be connected to their wifi in order to complete. Also during the test it asked to take pictures of phone front back, front and side.
Although for my iPhone 12 pro max they offered me $390 out of $790 which I asked why. It turned out that the csr answered questions in yes instead of no when it asked about camera working and all that. She tried again and it turn out the total trade in for it.

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but earlier this year The Verge did an investigation into the third party company Apple uses for mail-in trade-ins. Lots of other people with exact same issue, phone or Mac in perfect condition, the third party company somehow manages to find something wrong with it and offers 50 percent of the original offer to pad their profits.

Again, do it in store or I have had luck with SellYourMac.com.

I wish I would of read these articles before doing what I thought was an internal Apple trade-in! 🤦‍♂️. I feel like a fool now knowing that many others experienced the same issues as me. I’ve been buying a new phone and selling my gently used gear for about a decade now and have always sold my stuff local or through Swappa but I got suckered in this year with the near $800 trade that I figured it wasn’t worth my headache to monkey around with the other options. Wish I would have known that there was a 3rd party involved and not Apple with my return. That’s on me for not doing my research so I’m definitely kicking myself a bit. Lesson learned for this guy here!

bad news, hopefully they resolve your issue. I sell mine privately every year. This year I sold mine within 30 minutes of posting it. I got $1,000 for my 256GB iPhone 12 Pro. You probably could have got more. Never trade in with Apple, you’ll never get close to what you can selling privately.

I use Apple Trade in - and have for the last 6+ years with no problems. I've told family/friends to do the same and don't know anyone in person who has had a problem. But I've read of a few people having problems on Macrumors.

If I can I'll do the trade in - in store - I've done this for the last year and I feel much better about it vs Phobio. But I have to say my personal experience (and those I know) - I've had no problems with Phobio.

Sorry to hear you did :(. I wonder if it got damaged in shipping?

I usually sold mine private party as well but I was being lazy this year! Figured I’d just trade it to Apple and not have to worry about it. Boy was I wrong 🤦‍♂️.

As much of a pain as is this is, I’m really hoping that the phone wasn’t damaged in transit because if Apple doesn’t resolve the case I’m going to reject their assessment and have it returned. If I get a damaged phone, that would really stink and I never seem to have good luck with FedEx claims either!

Just because of this fear, I select store pick-up and trade-in all my devices in-store. Tried the same this year too and was surprised when the confirmation email said that I won't be able to trade in-store this year. Cancelled my order straightaway. If I need to wait another year for the 120Hz display, so be it, but I don't want to risk sending my device out of sight and that too to a third party.
