That was how I felt last year. Clearly the sales of the X were so good that Apple decided to release a larger version.

Good for Apple. Their success pleases me.

If you knew how long the R&D process was for most products then you’d realise a product like the XS Max would have been developed long before the sales figures were in for the iPhone X. We had leaks right at the beginning of this year and you dismissed them and took the mick out of everyone here and said a Max would never be released because there is no need for a flagship phablet. Remember wen you used to call Plus users teenage gamers and Netflix watchers?

You also said you only buy Apples most expensive iPhone because you think it gives you status, so why haven’t you bought the Max?

The title of this thread should read...Remember when iPhones were $1000.

As we see new technology like 5G NR and perhaps a Foldable or dual Screen IPhone
The price will certainly be $1500-2000
And don’t kid yourself, many people will pay the price

That would force me out of buying the new iPhone unless they keep making a budget phone like the XR. I don’t begrudge anyone spending that kind of money I just can’t do that myself.

And many people also won’t pay that price. I think if iPhones went to that extreme with their pricing then it would be for the niche end of the market. The mainstream consumers who make up the core segment will never pay that much. Apple would have to still offer a £700 iPhone and hope it ticks all the boxes or they’ll be in big trouble.

‘Many’ is grasping I think. There always be someone that will pay Apples prices, no matter what they list it at for an iPhone. But the reality is, the market as it stands right now, can _barely_ afford a $1000 iPhone XS without the help of carrier financing, let alone a possible folding iPhone in the future that could breach over $2000, That’s a very minuscule market that would be willing to pay that kind a premium for ‘new age tech’ that may or may not Flourish for Apple. No matter what Apple innovates for a phone, at the end of the day, it’s a smart phone that makes/receives calls, that’s its core functionality, and I don’t think the general consumer sees that type of investment for a smart phone.

I think it’s sometimes hard for enthusiasts here to realise that there is a disconnect between those who love Apple products and happily pay the price, and those who are just iPhone users and see it as a smartphone. I think the latter like you do is by far in the majority.

Don't worry. Apple with continue to make a "budget" phone, or decrease the price of previous flagship device. A huge chunk of their revenue comes from services, so they can't afford to have people leaving the ecosystem by being priced out of a device.

The used car salesman didn’t get it. The only irony is that Windows phones of the day we’re also expensive. And they were terrible. It’s like he didn’t understand the market he was already participating in, let alone the future potential.

This is the key. New phone pricing is horrendous. However, an older model is a viable option for a comparative bargain if you can forego the novelty of a new release. I’ll take that.

I remember my first experience with an iPhone 4. The design and screen rez brought with it a high novelty factor. But I remember thinking that it was still so slow, knowing that the market would mature. Take away the novelty and a 2 year old phone is now is a much better experience than that new iPhone 4 was.

We had 500 dollar phones in the 90s with 1Mhz processor and basic PDA functions. Now you have a full blown computer for between 500-1000 dollars in your pocket with thousands of very useful apps. Now we can even get the phone for free with a 2 year contract.

It seems the say-home unemployed gamers had their say and wanted their toy and Apple made them a phablet.

I said I would always been seen in Apple's most expensive standard sized iPhone. I have a job and no time to game or watch illegal video streams so I don't need the Max.

I use that 1994 StarTac as an example - I had one but ‘only’ paid $900 for it but after a spare battery, car charger, and case, it was a few dollars from $1000. BTW, that’s about $1700 in today’s dollars.

A friend always said buy the most expensive hardware you want, it’s not much different compared to your service plan.

Eleven years ago I had a Nokia E90 communicator. It was about $1000. So no I don't remember when flagship phones were $500. Hell the Motorola RAZR was like $600 when it was released and it was piece of junk.
I can’t believe I’m paying $3.95 a gallon in gas. I wish it was 1992 again.

When it cost $30/minute to make international calls on Bell Atlantic? Screw that!

No, I don’t and you neither. Listen to Steve Balmer, he’s laughing about $500 fully subsidized with a plan! So in fact the first iPhone was way more expensive.

Exactly! Add $200-$300 to get the real price! And adjust that $800 for inflation and you get very close to $999

Well, it was really only Ballmer that laughed in the face of high end phones. Then he realized MS was falling behind and they came out with a 'competing' product that never went anywhere. Today, the high end smartphone market is complete absent of MS. I attribute this largely to Ballmer's inability to read the market and unwillingness to take offerings from e.g. Apple seriously.

A multi-billion dollar opportunity squandered because he wanted to be smarmy instead of analytically honest.

Yeah because unemployed gamers spend between £1100 and £1500 on an iPhone rather than buying a £400 iPad lol. Ridiculously misinformed but hilarious all the same.
