Remember when phones were essentially just phones that could maybe message, and a few added on some really basic versions of email and calendar, and that's about it?

You can't ignore the fact that phones are overpriced these days. Yes they can do almost all the things a computer do, but still, I don't think it worth all that money and yes, I have the new XS max model but I know its a little luxury I gifted to myself.

Apple’s inflation for the smart phone ‘mark up’ is extending beyond what most consumers are interested in. The hardware is always excellent, but it’s not much about the hardware anymore as it is the software experience. And most of the iPhones perform exact same software capabilities.

I remember the Garmin StreetPilot 2720 cost $1,200 in 2005 with a 3.8" screen. All it did was GPS navigation. It was an extra $200 option if you wanted traffic, with a $60 a year subscription.

Adjusting for inflation, that would be a little over $1,800 today just for in-car GPS.

Not really. I sold cell phones in the late 90’s and the simplest most basic phones were $300.

They were just subsidized.

My first smartphone was the Toshiba 2032SP and it was $650.

That might certainly be that, but that's not really how the OP laid it out, which is how the response was laid out as well in reply. More importantly thigh, what else can't be ignored are some of the facts that I and various others have brought up in reply.

Cell phones are at worst about the same price that they’ve always been in 2018 dollars. On a cost-per-feature basis, they’re dirt cheap. That $1,700 in 2018 dollars StarTAC would only make calls and basically included a two-way pager - TAC was a pager data network for the younger folks.

A recent flagship cellphone is probably the best bang for the buck in computing history.

Yeah because unemployed gamers spend between £1100 and £1500 on an iPhone rather than buying a £400 iPad lol. Ridiculously misinformed but hilarious all the same.

Sure, there's plenty of money to be had living at home with mom and with no rent to pay. What else would they do with their unemployment checks. There's just so much ice cream one can eat.

I think your view that the only people who buy larger smartphones are unemployed people who live with their parents is fantasy, and I’m sure you know that really. If you’re not winding us up here then you need more exposure to the business world to see for yourself.
