Apple could add something useful instead of the camera button nobody asked for. Like 16GB of RAM, the X80 modem, and a 1-inch main camera sensor. The hardware on the iPhone is quickly falling behind if they don't add these things. But Apple probably doesn't care. It's all about the money!
Why complain? Just do not use the new button if it confuses you. Some of us consider it to be a good value add.

Yeah, Apple, a company whose business model hinges on getting people to buy their products, doesn't care about people not buying their stuff.

The correct answer is more likely that Apple has a better understanding of what people want in a phone, and it's not necessarily more ram (well, more ram than what is required to run AI anyways), or bumping specs for the sake of ticking off a checklist. Maybe try to understand why Apple does things the way they do, rather than assume it's all solely for the sake of cutting costs, or that people only buy their stuff because they are brainwashed sheep.

That’s fair enough, and a pretty good solution. It won’t work for iPhones as that is already mapped to Apple Pay, and triple click for accessibility shortcut, but a quick muscle memory camera open is something smartphones should have.
When I had an iPhone, I used to use triple-click to toggle brightness to 1% for bedtime reading while my wife slept. I can't remember if shortcuts can map to camera or not for triple click. Does double click only map to ApplePay? Can that be customized?

I doubt Apple will ever remove it, and I like how Apple is trying to innovate there new ideas. But the iPhone is becoming the Buzz light year of phones with all the flashy buttons.

I mean, it has two of them, one (the action button) which is almost universally praised, and one (camera button) where the verdict is mostly that it’s a good idea, with a flawed implementation.

I do wish there was an option to remove some options from the camera button. Personally I like the exposure and tone just to set there and then take the photo with the on screen shutter or volume button as actually taking photos with the new button feels too stiff.

NO

They're going to milk this Camera Button.

Not just Apple but why would any company give us what we really want.

They could have saved the money and used if for something else, like on the X75 modem for example, or bigger camera sensors. The camera button is not only a waste of money, nobody likes it either.
"Nobody"? Speak for yourself, please. I like it 🤷‍♂️
Even if Camera Control ends up having a niche user base and most people will just use on-screen controls, it should still stay in my opinion. There are a lot of features in the phone (especially the Pro models) that many people will never or almost never use. For example the LiDAR sensor or even something like Wi-Fi 7 - most people wouldn't notice the difference between Wi-Fi 7 and 5. Hardware accelerated ProRes is also one of those things, as is the USB 3 10 Gbit/s controller. This all adds costs everybody buying the phone pays for. I'd argue that of all features I listed as examples, Camera Control will likely end up seeing the most use across the widest user base.

Why only 16GB of RAM? Why not 32GB? 64GB? Why doesn't Apple add a full mechanical zoom lens that comes out 3 inches?
Probably because people want certain features that Chinese phones provide, but with Apple levels of polish. 16-18gb would be very welcome for future proofing and a 1” sensor would definitely help with low light photos and video.

Just got my 16 Pro today and I have to say, camera control is sweet. Apple, thank you. Texting and taking pictures make up the majority of use cases for most people that use a smartphone. A dedicated physical button for the camera is long overdue.

Not sure what y’all are doing wrong, but it’s the fastest, most convenient way to launch the app and take a picture.

Thanks again Apple. Hit a home run!!

For several years now on Samsung phones I've double-clicked the power button to launch the camera. So quick and convenient, and beats having to go back to the home screen to launch it. Works even if the phone is locked, so instant access to the camera.
Back Tap in accessibility is one great solution for you! Or Action Button if you have an iPhone that has it…
No need to go to home screen at all

I like the camera button. It’s way better than the previous phones, which instead of the button had a metal frame with a flush mounted antenna window that did nothing. I like more things, not less things.

I have a theory on the split feelings about Camera Control… when you’re trying to take a picture of a fast moving situation, it can shave off precious seconds. I suspect this is more important to people who have kids, because when the little ones start doing something cute, you only have a moment to capture it or it passes you by. Before I was a parent, it felt like I had way more time to set up a shot then hit the shutter button.

I don’t think that is the cause. Since all of the on screen controls are still there and remain fully functional on new iPhones. When Apple added the new camera control, it was an ADDITION. There was no impact to taking pictures like one did on previous phones.

I think I see your point. What I was trying to say was, if you can frame the subject and hit the shutter button even a half second faster, it can make the difference between getting the shot or not getting the shot. That's an invaluable upgrade for some people in many situations. True it's not just parents, but also street photographers and really anyone in fast-moving situations. For people that are rarely shooting in that scenario, you're right, it's not as huge an upgrade.
