Hey everyone, today my AT&T Pre-Paid data plan on my iPad just stopped working out of no where. I contacted AT&T and they informed me that my iPads IMEI has been blacklisted due to suspicious activity. I have no idea why?

I’ve been using this iPad for months, I bought it new, I have the receipts and proof of purchase, I even have AppleCare+ on it.

Unfortunately, AT&T customer service closed on me during a call on hold and before I could get much further in to the resolution.

I’m very concerned. This is a mistake. Has anyone ever had this happen? Why would this happen?

I’m going to call AT&T back in the morning. Just figured I’d chime in on here.

How can AT&T just blacklist your device like that? It’s my iPad lol. I’m confused.

I’m actually panicking very much so. They cannot do this to people.

Ive checked my IMEI on websites and it says it is clean, and on the global whitelist. And my device is not blacklisted.

Didn't you buy it through ebay or Craigslist? Do you know if the iPad was originally purchased on contract or via installment plan? I think that and lost/stolen are usually the most common reason for blacklisting by carriers.

P.S. I've also seen reports of people selling on ebay or Craigslist reporting devices as stolen after they've sold it.

AT&T stated the device was free and clear before I bought it, never activated, or on a contract, and no outstanding unpaid balance either. AT&T even unlocked it for me, and I rest it on iTunes and it shows all carriers in “cellular settings”. And I have a screenshot of the unlock from them. I’ve also spoken to the seller again, just giving him a heads up. He has sold over $20,000 dollars in items in just a few months with an excellent 10 year feedback record at 100%. I am dumb founded here honestly.

I’m anxious to speak to ATT again. As soon as they open.

If at&t doesn’t resolve the issue in the morning, I’m either filing a claim with PayPal, or going through apple care.

How can you say you bought it new if you bought it from a seller such as that?

Either you/ they were scammed and your checks were in the window before the original contract/ plan defaulted, or possibly someone has miskeyed the IMEI that should have been blockd and yours was collateral damage...

You need to take it up with the seller and/or AT&T - it isnt an Applecare problem at all.

Sounds like stolen and At&t just now getting around to flagging it and blacklisting it. It’s a common scam. Same as the Check deposit scam, where you can deposit a seemingly valid check and 4 days later it bounces.

At&t will just say it was purchase through a non authorized dealer.

Properly stolen and not due to financing being paid on it...i’ve Sold devices that i was paying off at the time with no comebacks.

I hope att can resolve it at 8AM this morning when they finally open the phone lines for customer service.

Then I’ll try PayPal..

And if that doesn’t work..

Then I’ll trip and break it in half, resulting in total incapacitation. And call Apple

Or make a durability test video!! Yes!

Alrighty then! AT&T told me that they could’ve helped me out if this iPad was blacklisted due to a bad account, or monies owed on device. They said they would’ve removed it from the blacklist with my proof of purchase. “This was not the case at all though” the item was not on a contract, and had zero balance. It was reported lost or stolen plain and simple.

It was never on a contract, and had no balance..

Yep! He got me!

I filed a claim on PayPal. I’m getting my $1,344 back.

I’ve dealt with something similar before “it usually works out for the buyer”. I’m about to hammer his perfect feedback. Yesterday was a nightmare when my data just went off while I was in the middle of something very important.

I’m thinking now... I’d rather just go in the apple store and hand over $1,699. I was so dead set on saving money lol. This is the first time to get jacked up on eBay haha.

Sometimes it's just best to bite the bullet and purchase new. People are becoming very clever in how to scam us these days. For me, it's just not worth the risk so I buy all my electronic gadgetry from reputable retail stores.

If you know a student or better yet a veteran... you can get the iPad Pro 11” 1TB for a great price... heck Amazon has these deals...
1.) $1,529 for the 12.9” WiFi only.
2.) $1,399 for the 11” WiFi only
4.) $1,594 for 11” Cellular/WiFi
5.) $1,699 for 12.9” Cellular/WiFi

Apple’s Veteran’s Website has the
1.) 11” 1TB Cellular for $1,529.99
2.) 12.9” 1TB Cellular for $1,709.99

Have you looked at buying one from your carrier and just paying monthly?

He probably tricked you with that low price (for a 1TB iPad Pro).

I have some recommendations.

1. Sometimes things are too good to be true. Always do as much research as you can when buying something that costs a lot of money.

2. Reviews and feedback can easily be botted to make the seller seem legitimate.

3. Bite the bullet and buy from an authorized seller (preferably Apple).

4. Try not to fall for another scam. ;)

Well, not purely due to financing but there have been occasions where the original purchaser stopped paying the monthly installments for a device they've sold.

This is why for high ticket items, I just buy from authorized retailers.

That is not necessarily true. (see below)

Sounds like you might have got caught up in something that is pretty common with iPhones... there are many reports of people buying new iPhones directly from Apple (or an Apple retail store) and then having their phones mysteriously locked out. Sometimes it is because the IMEI is registered by some email address (typically a Yahoo account) overseas.

The problem was so pervasive that Apple had to revamp their website that allows you to check the status of a particular iPhone. Turns out that scammers were using that site to calculate valid IMEI numbers that they would then use to clone.

I'm not saying that it is definitely the issue in this case, but that it's possible... and could happen even if you buy your cell-capable device directly from Apple.

You are right that this can happen even with a new device from a reputable source. The difference is that the reputable source will make the sale right by either correcting the blacklisting or providing a new device.

Every time I read one of these types of issues with eBay or Craigslist or any other "bargain" place, it just reinforces my desired to buy new from a reputable place and just not worry about this. Yep, I'll pay more but I'll have peace of mind and won't ever have to worry if I decide to return it.

It’s all good everybody, I appreciate the support. I’m gonna keep this thread updated until this is resolved, and a new iPad is here.

I could’ve bought one in an Apple store from the get go. I think because this model here was gonna be the third iPad I was getting, I really let my guard down on where it was coming from.

PayPal claim is open. Buyer has not responded yet.
[doublepost=1557871965][/doublepost]Seller sent a message back on eBay. And said this.

I do not have anything to do with what you’re being told from AT&T you have to sort that out with them. I am not at fault and I have no knowledge of it being stolen. My family we operate a business and a young man who is now deceased bartered the iPad as a method of payment for additional services. And you’re opening PayPal claims is ridiculous.
[doublepost=1557872114][/doublepost]I thought it was interesting that he only said the word “Stolen” and not “Lost or Stolen” as I’ve never mentioned it like this to him. It’s almost like he knows it is stolen? Hmm. I dunno.

Regardless PayPal claim is in. I’ll escalate soon enough. These always result in refunds.

He doesn't sound like a very nice guy and the whole deceased young man story is more than likely a sob story.

So what does the seller recommend as a remedy since opening a PayPal claim is ridiculous? It's amazing how many deceased people seem to factor into questionable deals online!

They normally sell used designer clothes and handbags so it’s doubtful they have an acceptable remedy to offer (unit to exchange).

An acceptable remedy would be getting a refund I suppose. I would rather keep my iPad and not have to deal with any of this though.. I see you’ve managed to find out who I purchased this from, regardless of what they are selling he should do the right thing. If he knew nothing about the iPad, I wonder how he knew it was a AT&T iPad? No branding, nothing. Just an Unopened iPad sealed in the box. How would he know what carrier it was attached to? I dunno. Anyways.
[doublepost=1557884846][/doublepost]I sold a iPad Pro 11” unlocked 64GB used on eBay. I sold it right after I bought this 1TB iPad, so I could recoup some funds.

I sold it as “good condition” “unlocked” and a “clean IMEI” that was ready to be used on the Apple sim, or insert your own SIM card.

The buyer was thrilled! He was extremely happy. No problems whatsoever. I have not heard from him since. And I never will.

Lol I love how these stolen devices always have a unbelievable story tied to them when they get called out on it. “I have no idea why it’s coming up as stolen, my wife’s aunt had a friend who knew someone who’s mom had one that her son had found for her for a gift”

No sorcery here, you linked us to the seller’s profile when you quoted him in your previous post.

It is possible that the seller came into possession of the iPP in a way that they thought was legitimate only to have things go south on you the buyer after the sale. Hard to say.

As for them knowing the carrier the iPP was linked to isn’t that normally on the label on the back of the box? I don’t own the latest version of the iPP but my Verizon 2017 model’s box has the designation of what network it is tied to.

I have no idea how these blacklists work but perhaps things looked clear to the seller at first only to have the blacklisting occur later.
