Retina Display: Chill Out

Retina display is to compensate for the fact that people are holding the iPhone a lot closer to their face than they would the iPad.

iPhone users are usually holding the thing a foot away from their faces, while iPad users will often have it sitting in their lap, or held out at near arms length.

The iPad doesn't need a retina display, and all these hope/wish threads with people expecting one in the second gen iPad are ruining my life.

Good luck waiting for that. No way a "retina" display makes it to a screen that large unless you want to pay $1200 for your 16GB ipad with no 3G.

how is the ipad obsolete? strangely my ipad still works even after the release of iphone 4. seeing as you don't have an ipad you may have received some bad information. the retina display is beautiful, but the ipad is still a great device.

PS. ipad has 256mb of ram.

It's actually quite amazing and makes text readable at much smaller sizes than any other phone can.

It's also not coming to the iPad any time soon. While I'm sure it's technically possible, it would cost thousands. Not only do you have to build the display, but you have to find a way to drive it and fit all that within the case while staying within required heat parameters.

Calling it an over-hype is just plain wrong. There is a difference and the Retina Display should be a requirement by law! Hehehe...just can't stop bragging about it.

You know, I feel for ya. If I hadn't had mine yet (after numerous exchanges due to dust under the screen), I'll actually hold off until the display is:

- updated to a higher res (Retina Display, etc.)
- the LCD is fused with the glass (to prevent dust under the screen)

For now, I shall live with it. But man, after using my iPhone 4, it hurts to see those "big" pixels on the iPad. To those who haven't seen the Retina Display in person, I strongly suggest you sample it, and you will understand our obsession with it.

I have both and yes the retina is pretty sweet, but the ipad looks so damned good anyways I don't care.

And the distance of viewing is right my iPad is usually further away than my phone when viewing.

I wish peeps would stop this iphone4 vrs ipad thing - each has its merits and drawbacks.

would I like to see the next iPad have retina? yes of course as it is a lovely display, but at what cost (in ££, processing required and resources needed (GHz & Ram).

Alright, I did the math. An iPhone 4 held 12 inches from your face is 68.3 pixels per degree. An iPad held at 24 inches from your face is 55.3 pixels per degree, or 23% more pixels per degree.

One of the things Apple has been successful at is marketing their devices without using all of their tech specs as selling points.

When I bought my iPad, I did not know how much RAM was on board. And frankly, I didn't care. All I know is that it works, and it works well.

Why would you thumb your nose at 256 megs of RAM? What, specifically, do you need to do on the iPad that you think would work better with more? Or are you simply jealous because you realized that the iPhone 4 ships with more RAM than the iPad does?

By the way, this latest rumour of a 7" iPad might be one way Apple will address the pixel density without having to put in a Retina Display. A 7" iPad would probably have the same 1024x768 resolution, but more densely packed in the smaller screen.

I hold my iPad at the same distance as my iPhone. Before the rein display I would hold the iPhone much closer though. I have 20/12 eyesight.

I was never a fan of e-books until using ibooks on iphone 4. The quality is, so good I'm gonna pick up iPad 2 next year(It would look great on a 9" display), since it does that plus a lot more. the iphone actually makes me want an ipad now.

I've heard people say this but I have never (ever) sen this message before in any iOS device I have had. I don't mean to say that you are lying, In just have never seen this message. As far as I know, iOS automatically makes more room (memory) when needed, so I dont understand why you would need to reboot.

Anyway, whether the ipad could use the ram or not, is a moot point. Apple decided to be cheap and to unsure future upgrading as well as keep magins in line. We shouldnt be surprised. Besides, my GF's 3GS runs excellent on iOS 4.0, so I could imagine the ipad doing very well too. We need to remember that the ipad and iphone team were kept away from eachother. I expect iOS 4.0 to open up the ipad quite a bit. Hopefully its not wishful thinking
