Retina Display ruining ipad experience

Even though I don't own an iPhone 4, I have had the chance to play with one and actually compared some things side by side. I did not tank the difference was significant enough to ruin the iPad.
problem is i don't see apple putting a retina in the ipad in the next gen. even though that would be fantastic! without the retina on the iphone 4, would anyone read ibooks on there? no me.
Both the cost and the technical specs are cost prohibitive. We may see a screen that supports 1080p next time (probably a WUXGA - 1920x1200), but not anything near the specs of the current retina display. Anything more would be ridiculous on a screen of this size.
My rough calculations would put the retina display for an iPad at about 2660x1774. I know that is quite a bit more than the current 1024x768, but we probably don't need anything with that high of quality for an iPad.

So, a 3.5 inch display like the iPhone's is perfect for something like a retina display--but the 9.7 inch iPad screen is too big or something? People used to say that high resolution displays are "wasted" on screens as large as 15 inches.
Anyway, I'm still happy with my iPad even though it's low resolution.

If you would follow/continue the lines to a screen size smaller than 20", then you will see that the value of a higher resolution screen diminishes.
Keep in mind that upscaling this high density panel from 3.5" to 9.7" would likely be over 5x increases in costs (it's not linear increases). Don't think many are willing to pay $3000 plus for an iPad. Also it would require a new processor and more battery power.
The OP wasn't talking about costs, display distances, or what kind of customer he was. He merely suggested that the iPhone 4's display blows the iPad display out of the water.

to the picture above. Empirically, from using the iPad and iPhone 4, there is a noticeable difference when viewing 18 inches or less for me.
The chart is for home theater applications though and not for reading text from a backlight display. My understanding is that the main point of the higher res display is to help reduce eyestrain from looking at the iPhone's screen for an extended period of time.

True. It is for HT applications. I also don't disagree that retina display may reduce eye strain. However, I've used my iPhone 3GS a few times reading my iBooks and have not experienced any eye strain. Additionally, I can use my iPad for hours without any eye strain. I am also very prone to migraines and have not experienced any symptoms from either device while reading.
I got to play with one yesterday.
I couldn't own it without going and buying bifocals. I couldn't read a darn thing on it... Sucks to get old! LOL!!
I couldn't even hold it close enough with my regular glasses on to SEE how nice it might have been, it's just really tiny when it is at the end of your arm!
Anyway, I have no envy.... My iPad is perfect. I can see it!

You are probably correct. However, I think the iPad display resolution could be improved noticeably without coming close the pixel density on the retina display. Again though, I enjoy my iPad a lot and even though I own an iPhone 4 also its not a huge deal.
