I have wondered about that. I assume it's kinda like seeing a movie in HD and then seeing it in SD. The SD version isn't all that bad, but you've been spoiled by HD.

I gotta say I was at the Apple store today and put my 3gs next to a ip4 and I think you guys who are orgasming about the ip4 display are smoking crack. It certainly was sharper, but that's about it, but it was certainly no big deal at all. After hearing some of you praise it I was expecting a much bigger deal than the reality was.

I was actually considering buying 2 ip4's as I felt myself getting sucked into the hype, but even though the store had them in stock I walked out quite happy with my 3gs.

I had the opposite experience. I went to the apple store yesterday to check out the new phones. Holding it next to my 3Gs (tuned to macrumors to compare) the ip4 was SIGNIFICANTLY better/brigher/easier to see. Then I brought my 3Gs over to the ipad and found my phone had the far better display. I talked to the staff who thought a) the ipad was marred by prints and b) the color on the ipad was cooler than the iphone. He cleaned the ipad and that improved it - but still, the phone seemed brighter and easier to read. I may just prefer the colors/brightness on the phone.

All that said, I think it would be a lot more enjoyable to look at a webpage on a 9" screen than on a phone screen - and if I could afford it, I'd buy an ipad today. But I was disappointed in the screen after my little comparison. I'll try another store in case it was the lighting in Soho.

I have heard enough about retina displays to last two life times...

iPhone 4 has a retina display..
iPad does not. Nor will it anytime soon!

GET THE F OVER IT!! JESUS!!

What's with the overly dramatic response? The OP wasn't whining or complaining.... he was half-joking in a way. I totally agree, after using the retina display, it's hard to see the iPad in the same light, just as using the iPad had an adverse effect on the iPhone's screen for many people (it seemed much smaller to many).

Second, how do you they won't use the retina display on the iPad anytime soon? Seems to stand they'd want to implement this technology in other devices. The iPad has excellent battery life, all it can do is get better, even with a retina display. I think it's a given, but that's just my view.

I own a ip4, org iPhone and an iPad and yes, you can clearly see the differences on ip4 especially reading text. I used to read email on my org iPhone and I wouldn't do that again after I got my iPad. Now, I don't mind reading email from the ip4. The text just looks much better and sharp now! So yes, if cost is not a concern, a retina iPad will be my my preference.

I was not too impress with the display at the apple store but upgrading from the org iPhone was a no brainer. The retina screen just glows on you. It's like going back to SD after u watch HD...

Wanting to and being able to are two different things. The cost would be too high to do it anytime in the immediate future.

Curse you iphone 4. I know it shouldn't, but every time i pick up my ipad I am struck by the difference. Maybe I'm holding the ipad too close. Anyway, when this technology comes to ipad, Apple has another sale.

What a croc...

Why do people just compare it to the iPad? Surely your HDTV, your laptop, your desktop monitor or monitors etc. Are all now suddenly terrible too?

Yet all the bitching seems to aimed squarely at the iPad? Do not understand the logic at all.

Because they're the two portable Apple devices people carry with them the most, that's why the comparison is made.

And yes, the retina display does make other screens look inferior and has me looking forward to similar technology being implemented in other devices.

I don't get why people seem to be lashing out at the OP when he was using a light-hearted tone to make a valid point.

The iPad resolution is because of the web, in web design everything website is coded to be viewed on 1024x768, so no retina display for the iPad in the near future

Personally, I couldn't care less about the retina display. My wife and I have discussed and are considering going back to non-smart phones when our contract expires. We both have iPad's with 3G and usually always have them with us, so having most of the same features and functions are pointless to us. I don't care how good the screen is, if I'm not using the device, then it does me no good.

Just my two cents for today.

It's human nature to defend your choices such as expensive gadget purchases. That's why each gadget "camp" has their own forums lol.

I'm still waiting for the fanboy who clawed his eyes out with his hands because the entire world looked so drab after gazing at his ip4, yeah this is how it sounds to the rest of us.

Exactly... :)

Now that I have my iPhone 4, I can truly appreciate the sharper display over my now retired iPhone 3G. As a proud owner also of the iPad (which I'm typing this from) I can confidently say my iPhone 4's retina display has not ruined my iPad experience. The iPad, IMO, has a magnificent display for a 9" screen which makes it better for reading and surfing. Even zooming in (pinch) on the text, I could not see jagged edges. Only the most discriminating, spec crazed techies would care to make such a comparison.
My iPad and iPhone 4 are now my complete package for mobile devices on the go.....couldn't be more satisfied! :D

It like comparing Apple and Oranges, I use my iPad for things I do not use my iPhone 4 for. however, I do read magazines, and like to landscape (2 pages), but I found the texted does get blur and I have to switch to portrait. This would not be so with retina, this would not be a problem due to the hire DPI, but it also could be down to the DPI of the magazine, I have passed on my comments to the editors.

but to be honest the iPhone 4 has not ruined my iPad experience, not one bit.

No Difference!!!

Seriously, personally (and this is just my opinion. I don't see much difference AT ALL!) I ordered BOTH my iPad and my iPhone 4 on the same day, the iPad arrived 2 days earlier then the iPhone 4 (so nearly the same time.) I am THRILLED with BOTH!!! I have read all the hoopla about defects etc. all I have experienced is quality products, the same as I have ALWAYS experienced with my old G4 PowerMac, my 09 iMac, my 2010 Macbook Pro, iPhone 3G etc. They are both wonderful pieces of tech! The retina "may" be better, but if it is then it's minimal. At least when being compared to the iPad. Now, compared to most of the other leading smartphones and you CAN see a noticeable difference. (I have compared several) but if you ask me Apple did great with the iPad's display. We all know that in 7-9 months their will be an improved iPad and it will most likely include a retina, but until then this is an AWESOME device!!
