Both the cost and the technical specs are cost prohibitive. We may see a screen that supports 1080p next time (probably a WUXGA - 1920x1200), but not anything near the specs of the current retina display. Anything more would be ridiculous on a screen of this size.

My rough calculations would put the retina display for an iPad at about 2660x1774. I know that is quite a bit more than the current 1024x768, but we probably don't need anything with that high of quality for an iPad.

Close but no, since the retina display has double the pixel density than the ipad would too. 2048by1536. Apple would want to keep the 4:3 aspect ratio. Anyways i think that would be pointless and to expensive.

90% of people have never even used an IPS display, and now we want an upgrade?

I'll pass on a costlier unit, thanks though.

This is just fine for me as-is

You cant just butcher math like that and expect it to be correct. hammie was correct. Besides retina display is a freakin buzzword, and 960x640 res is a little better than the windows mobile phone Ive had for a year.

Only apple could turn a higher res. screen into some buzzword bZ$^#S%$t and have everyone in America talking about the retina display. Apple is a marketing genius.

Wrong I'm afraid. You're assuming that the iPhone 3GS and iPad start at the same pixel density. They don't. The person you replied to was pretty close , maybe a little over but not by much. This has been covered to death elsewhere and I can't be arsed to go and do the maths again but you're looking at a screen res higher than a 27 inch iMac.

Wrong I'm afraid. You're assuming that....
Really? But then you're assuming that you would need 330+ppi, e.g. viewing at 10-12 inches.
I think a 16-18 inches may be more appropriate viewing distance for the iPad; 230ppi should be sufficient.
1920x1280 or 2048x1536 should work fine.

Can you IMAGINE the whining that'd result if apple said it's a retina display provided you hold it further away? Plus even if you only double up at 2048 x 1536 you're quadrupling the amount of work the CPU and GPU need to do with regards video output. Theres other issues too, memory requirements go up, heat issues start to be a major problem, gaming gets more costly as more detailed art is needed... Apple would need to produce that sort of a performance leap inside 12 months and still manage 10 hours or more of battery life. Very very unlikely, certainly I haven't seen any hints of a suitable chip that'd do the trick, not that quickly and not without killing the battery anyway.

Well, Jobs SAID 10-12 inches @ 300+ppi = retina, I don't believe he ever said 326ppi = retina.
Is using an iPad at 12" inches from the eyes is common? I cannot imagine typing with my fingers that close to my face.
They could easily just re-state the math "16-18 inches @ 230+ppi = retina" and live with the whiners.

Yeah, yeah. I used to argue that 960x640 was unlikely for the iPhone too (I was wrong). You realize the iPhone 4 drives a display with similar resolution to the iPad and similar battery life yet uses a far smaller battery? Moore's Law says it will happen some day (I won't predict when).

I own both. iPad display looks great at viewing distance.

iPad has much larger display, thus viewing distance is further than iPhone. Duh!

I think the iPad isn't being appreciated as well as it should be! It isn't even out in every country yet and people are still complaining about what it doesn't have  Next thing it will be why doesn't my Macbook have retina display with resolution of 4800x3200

Live with it

It's pretty funny. Just a couple of months ago I thought the iPad had the best display I've ever used (IPS and all). Amazing that within two months it's already seeming a little dated next to my iPhone 4.

Agree with OP (to an extent anyway). But I still love the iPad.

No, none of you are getting it.. Apple Doubled the pixel density of the iphone... So if they want a retina display they will double the current pixel density of the ipad..... lol :)

Anyways, the other guys math doesnt work since its not a 4:3 ratio...

I gotta say I was at the Apple store today and put my 3gs next to a ip4 and I think you guys who are orgasming about the ip4 display are smoking crack. It certainly was sharper, but that's about it, but it was certainly no big deal at all. After hearing some of you praise it I was expecting a much bigger deal than the reality was.

I was actually considering buying 2 ip4's as I felt myself getting sucked into the hype, but even though the store had them in stock I walked out quite happy with my 3gs.

You must not have good eyes than..
Its delicious...

What kind of new definition of "retina" is that? Double a display's pixel density and it becomes a "retina" display?
Wow, I didn't know when I went from 800x600 to 1600x1200 on my 20" CRT it suddenly became a "retina" display?

I agree with double, but not for that reason.
I wouldn't rule out switching to 3:2 @ 1920x1280 as this would be double the iPhone 4 (perhaps in a 7-inch form).

I can't see pixels on the iPhone at any reasonable distance. I can on iPad. There's a big difference, and it's factual.

Having said that, I still think the iPad has a nice display, and if I zoom a little, pixelation goes away........but once I get used to the almost-liquid-like display clarity of iPhone 4, it makes me want that pixel density on *EVERYTHING I USE*. Now that I've seen the best, I want it on everything.

lol.. So, you think lowering your resolution to half the native res and than doubling you get double the pixel density? lol ok..

Make your crt 3200by2400 and than its a retina display.... Dumbass.. lol

Retina display means you cant count the pixels, like 10 inches away from the display..

No, retina display is some dumbass term that apple came up to market their higher res screens. Of course both android and winmo had 280+dpi screens for the last year, but only when apple releases a high res screen it magically becomes a retina display.

20/20 vision. I fired up the browser and went to various full size pages on both side by side, I just didn't see what the big deal was at all.

its not a big deal at all.. there is only so much you can do with a 3.5" screen. The question is which would one rather surf/read/compose email on, an iphone 4 or an ipad. I know my answer by far would be ipad

Sucks to be you dude. I haven't seen the iPhone 4 up close too much but I can't really distinguish a huge difference due to my acute ocular deficiency. I don't think I'll even get an iPhone 4 ultimately. I won't have a whole bunch of friends with iPhones to FaceTime with, I might just pick up a 3GS for a cool $100 :p

My iPhone 4 just came in the mail yesterday, so I had to do my own unscientific test, & put it side by side with my 3GS, & my iPad.... Whoa.... If you can't see the difference, I feel bad for you. Now all 3 displays look great, I tested books, websites, this one as well as some others, games, and iTunes movies.... The iPhone 4 blew the other 2 away. Maybe if you didn't notice a difference in the apple store it was because of the crappy lighting & dirty display model phones. I was slightly disappointed on first viewing in the apple store too.... But getting it home, & really running through everything it is beautiful... Apple can call it any stupid name they want as long as I can have it!
Now... That being said, unless I'm out or in a hurry, I will still reach for my iPad first for any thing I might use my phone for... Even with a lower resolution display, iPad is king for everything.... Now I just need iMovie ported over to take advantage of all that screen real estate!

Possibly it was the Apple lighting at the store, but I don't see how much better it would be at home.

As for the resolution you know the ipad has a higher resolution than the ip4?

Curse you iphone 4. I know it shouldn't, but every time i pick up my ipad I am struck by the difference. Maybe I'm holding the ipad too close. Anyway, when this technology comes to ipad, Apple has another sale.

I don't think you are thinking very straight here. Are you willing to pay more than 499 dollars for ipad? Retina display on ipad will bring the production cost too high.
