Yeah, but I'm not saying "this is a universal problem with every single M1 computer that has been created, and will ever be created".

I think that's the disconnect that we keep running into here... people keep assuming that I'm stating this to be some universal problem that affects everyone.

That's not what I'm saying.
I suspect the thread sets the tone for readers, and thus their interpretation of what you're writing.

You're also kinda saying something that's a bit of a "okay and..." from the stance that solid state device failures are typically heat related in some manner. Some portion of components designed for a particular environment fail to operate in that environment; hopefully the number is few and most are culled in testing or other QC mechanisms. Some pass testing (or get past a sampling based QC methodology) and fail within a few hours of operation.

None of which really has anything to do with MBA or MBP or even M1 vs Intel.

We also have no idea whether ESD was a factor in any failures either - we're definitely in ESD season in the northern hemisphere.

How can I tell if my Macbook Air M1 is throttling? I have several monitor apps (istat etc.) that show it sitting in the 80s, while TG pro spits out numbers in the 90s, nearly 100. This is with the screen open and connected to a 4k lg display. I do notice some slow down when I have a ton of things running, which coincides with higher temperatures, but I'm not 100% sure if the slow down is totally related to throttling or that I've simply taxed some resource in the first place. You know, like 50 tabs across 10 windows, a few in chrome, the rest in firefox, several text editors, spotify, handbrake, whatsapp/signal. Not actively editing/exporting, but a lot going on. The easiest way to tell the system is under stress is that the audio cuts out for a split second.

See below for a pretty regular readings I'm getting during the work day.

If you’re running stuff on an Air that makes it fry then you’re definitely holding it wrong.

It’s an Air. It’s an ultra portable for office use not a 3D rendering, CG modelling, 8K video rendering, 50 Safari tabs workstation.
Sadly, this type of responses kill credibility...

M1 Air is sufficiently powerful device to be used in any scenario...

Better way of helping Apple to define their product target use is applying for the job...

Here you go:

You can use iStatistica to show temperature in M1 devices now.
TGPro on my M1 MBA shows 96-98 C while playing Witcher 3 (CrossOver)...

Makes me nervous, and now - hearing of these dead M1s on YouTube - makes me even less happy...

I would love some quick root-cause analysis/statement from Apple - esp as my new MBP M1 arrives tomorrow...

We aren't seeing anything. It's one guy.
Its not one guy - I went through the comments on YT video and saw it myself...

However... there is a strange evolution when one user asked the poster to "hold power button for 17sec" and poster thanked for that but did not respond if that solved his problem...

I wouldnt be surprised that people oversaw such a thing - on any computer (Apple, Windows etc..) holding power button (keep it 20seconds or more) leads to soft reset...

Like yesterday I remember in 2013-2014 seeing my office colleagues taking their batteries out of their laptops when they get stuck in Windows... When I told them for power button holding trick, they were shocked...:)

I don't blame OP

If you are having any issues at all that are concerns for you, return it and let Apple fix this stuff and jump back in at a later date.

It's **very** early in the M world still
