Especially when the same thing is reproducible off many previous tablets from Apple and Samsung and others, but this is the first time we’re all suddenly disturbed by it.

Smacks a bit of people being bored and looking for problems (which is absolutely one of my favorite pastimes).
I don’t think its fair at all to call people who are getting motion sickness / nausea from using the new Mini “bored”. Let’s try and be empathetic.

I‘ve owned different models of iPad’s every year since they were first released, and I’ve never had this kind of experience of using one before, thats the only reason I’ve been posting about it. It was apparent as soon as I booted it up, I didn’t go looking for it. I’m aware that all devices have their limitations, but this feels like much more than that when in use. I’m not “bored”. Its a real issue for some people👍🏼

Yeah, I just watched my most trusted review channel, TallyHoTech. She did her traditional deep dive into the Mini 6, and said she saw no jelly or tearing, and then showed a closeup of scrolling up and down quickly, and I saw no tearing either. So I would not be shocked if it’s certain models coming out of one factory that are to blame.

I’m getting my 64gb tomorrow, and I’ll be brutally honest with what I find (as well as comparing it to my 2020 12.9 Pro). We shall see…
Have you got a link to that TallyHoTech review? I can’t find it anywhere on the Youtube channel

I agree. I may not be sensitive to this issue but I can empathize with those that do. We all have different reactions to different sensory input, some good and some bad. Some people clearly have different sensitivities to different kinds of displays.

In my case, I could care less about the alleged "Jelly Scrolling" issue by itself. I never actually saw or noticed it on my Mini 6. I just had a display that almost immediately gave me a headache just by staring at it and trying to use it, even when the display was still and not scrolling or moving. I don't know if I just had a bad display or if it is something about my eyesight, or the display frequency of the display? I just know it was unusable to me and I need to send it back. I loved the design and layout of the device, and I am disappointed that it didn't work out for me. If it was just a bad panel, maybe in a few months I will try one out in person in a store and maybe give it another try if I have a good experience. I did learn one lesson though for me, don't preorder - wait until I can actually use the product in person before I buy.

Increasingly smart advice with modern Apple -- unfortuantely

Particularly painful mistake if someone perhaps traded-in their iPad mini 5 and now wishes they could have it back.

Whit’s bugging in me in particular is that I have other iPads at home and I can see a similar phenomenon in various orientations on those, but it’s minor and not bothersome. But on the new Mini it just jumps out of the screen and smacks me in the face, thats what makes no sense to me. . It’s really weird.

If they could just make it happen in the previous orientation, I'd like to think this would be a non-issue again..

But -- I do also worry that the screen is in some way technically inferior on this particular issue.

We know how Tim operates...

That is not true. The M1 12.9 iPad Pro doesn’t have the jelly effect.

It used to be a common problem in OLED displays (has been fixed now). So it is simply Apple choosing a low quality display for the iPad Mini.

The question is, would people pay a higher price for the iPad Mini if it had a higher quality display, as Apple will not do this for free.
The iPad Pro has a screen so it it has the jelly effect (I have one at home and checked).

For all I care they could double the price of the mini if they included enough goodies in it.

It’s nothing to do with the new phones. Apple made the decision to prioritise landscape mode over portrait despite portrait being an extremely popular mode for the mini. The 5 wasn’t like this so people who come from a 5 and use the 6 for reading see their usual way of working compromised.
I agree with you on that. Apple should not have made the change to landscape as the default. They messed up on that. Oddly, I used my Mini4 in landscape all the time, but I use my Mini 6 in portrait. (the touch ID being on top is what changed what I did.)

BTW have people who suggest not scrolling and reading at the same time developed a technique where you close your eyes every time you scroll?
You don't need to close your eyes to not see something, you just have to not focus on it.

Apple should not have made the change to landscape as the default.

Hear hear!

Also - not all of Apple even got the memo on this.
The units in stores, nearly all the official promo material -- it's all heavily skewed towards portrait mode.

Even Tim holding it when talking to iJustine -- both of them in Portrait

@Macintosh101 gets all the credit for highlighting the prevalence of Portrait mode usage by Apple themselves.

👍🏼 Thanks. This is what irks me. I’m now trying to see if it will suit a purpose for me mainly in a landscape orientation.

Switching from iOS to Android simply because of the issues with the Mini 6 seems extreme, IMO.

I'm still greatly enjoying my Mini 5 (the only iPad I currently use) and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. But my phone is Android (Galaxy A20) and my full-size tablet is Android (Galaxy Tab S6) which replaced my iPad Pro.

Android and iOS are significantly different and a person's interaction with personal devices like a phone and tablet are...well... personal, so it is very difficult to gauge how well these devices would meet your needs.

The Galaxy Tab S6 (and the Tab S7+ even more so) are far better at meeting my needs for full-size tablets than iPad Pros. Given the current direction that Apple is taking the iPad Pros in, I don't see myself ever returning to them.

There are many review videos out on YouTube on those devices. Those will give a variety of perspectives, some of which might resonate with your needs/wants.

Regarding texting from different devices, I am able to send texts from my Android tablets, iMac, chromebook, and Windows systems using my phone. The only device I can't do that from is my iPad.
I mean I wouldn't switch to Android simply because of the Mini 6, rather that I am bored and wanted something new and now I won't have the new mini. Been going between Android and iOS for 10 years even though it has mostly been iOS. The thing that has been pulling me back has always been the tablet apps in Android, they haven't been as good at being a dedicated app for the tablets that use the larger screen real estate and more felt like enlarged phone apps.

The problem is using different OSs for phone and tablet, they do not play together nicely so it needs to work as a package.

Yeah same (I didn't notice on Mini 4 before), but the difference is that for me (and probably a lot of people), they read/use this device in portrait mode (I guess because of the size being close to a phone, and seeing text narrow and tall is faster to scan/read than wide and short). wonder if they could put in a software fix to 'adjust jelly to portrait/landscape' .. then I'd be more inclined to keep it.
I just grabbed a purple 256 cellular. Great little device, jelly is there but I think it looks quite cool. Kinda reminds me of the genie effect in macOS. But seriously, I’m not phased by it. But, how I’ve missed touchID!!

Just returned mine and got a refund. All the other Mini’s in the store had the jelly wobble. Yes, other iPads do it in landscape but it has never bothered me anything like the Mini did. It is horrendous, especially given the price. Shame as everything else about it was great. Maybe next year if the sort the issue out….

The only deficiencies I've seen with regard to tablet apps for Android has been the lack of a quantity of quality notetaking apps. Nothing really like GoodNotes is available for Android. There are a few adequate options, but nothing that I feel is robust enough to switch over from GoodNotes on my Mini 5.

Many apps have been updated to make better use of the larger screens. It becomes less of an issue when I'm multitasking. Multitasking on the Galaxy Tab S6 is amazing even when using the Tab in tablet mode. Switch over to DeX and it's out of this world.

I highly recommend trying to get some extended time with a Tab S6 or newer (S6 Lite, S7, and an alphabet assortment of variations) to see how well it'll work for you.

this is exactly the same reason why I Returned the mini 6 and I also will wait for the next update and hopefully this will be fixed.

How exactly are you expecting this to be fixed? This, being a phenomenon that every 60hz LCD panel experiences?

By positioning the display connector so that the jelly scrolling is present in Landscape instead of Portrait; jelly scrolling is significantly more noticeable in portrait. Hence why you've never seen anyone complaining about jelly scrolling in any iPad until this one. The displays also seem cheap, iFixIt said they think they may be using a cheaper display which makes the effect more pronounced too. This has the worst jelly scroll of any Apple device ever made

Interesting.

I’ve been wondering about that part as well.

Tim loves to cut costs

let’s all remember they jacked the price of these things 25% across-the-board

I use my iPad mini in landscape, so that wouldn’t be a fix.

So do I primarily.
Jelly scrolling is way more noticeable on portrait displays than it is on landscape displays that have jelly scrolling. I've used every iPad I've had in landscape and never noticed jelly scrolling; until the small amount of time that I use this mini in Portrait. Even as someone who predominantly uses it in Landscape, it is absolutely unbearable to even use for 5 mins in Portrait. Jelly in Landscape is way less noticeable and I'd trade it for that in a second. And I am right, you can go read through to find that practically NOBODY complained about this on any other iPad until this monstrosity of a product.
