It breaks my heart, but since Apple have said they’re not going to do anything, I’m going to have to return mine.

For the premium price I paid ($150+ for the cellular), it’s just too much of a flaw for me to ignore. When the mini 6 pops up on the refurbished store or on sale, I may pick it up then. The lack of storage was also a big sticking point for me :/. $400 for 64gb seems more reasonable than $500 (or even $450 at education pricing.)

If I still can’t deal with it (meaning the jelly scrolling), I’ll have no choice but to wait until the next mini refresh or whenever apple throws the non-pro devices a pro-motion bone. 😞

Now excuse me while I go dramatically sigh into the distance.

I too am broken hearted. The mini is such a good device and this version is ruined by pointless stupidity.

I would have preferred the old design with an improved screen than a new design with worse screen.

I have no issues with the screen aside from jelly scroll—though I am coming from a mini 3. One of the big reasons I bought the mini 6 was for the design and specs update, so I won’t be getting the mini 5 to hold me over or anything. It’s back to phone reading for me :(.

The worst part is just how hyped I was for this product. For months, it was all I could think about. It’d be my first ipad in years, and I wanted it for its size specifically. If I really wanted any ipad at all, I could get a refurbed 2020 ipad pro right now!

Well… looking at the positive, I can get a 4K tv for my room instead.

Assuming what you say is correct, does this condition appear to affect only affect some screens (bad QA/QC) or are virtually all them this bad, so far?
You should be able to test this theory by using the iPad mini 6 in landscape mode. The Jelly scroll effect is only pronounced in portrait.

…just initiated return and cancelled the smart folio. Seems a rushed and cost reduced product with modern chassis. They even just literally shrink everything from the ipad 11, from text, webpages, etc. I really loved the mini and bought the first one. This is just not worth the price. Oh well, there will always be a better version.

Such a great point -- it feels so under developed for the specifics of the size of the mini and how it's used by a large portion of the user base (in portrait).

You nailed with the "literally just shrunk everything down from the iPad 11" comment.
Spot on

I thought about getting the Mini, but after about 3-4 pages on this thread and I think I'll wait. It would have been more of a novelty purchase for me as I have 12.9" M1 Pro as my main iPad, but also still use my 1st Gen 12.9" Pro and 2018 11"Pro. The 12.9's are used at home and for travel while the 11" is at work.

I thought having a mini for portability would be nice, but I think I'd want it to have 5G and I'm not ready to spend that much on a novelty. I suppose I could trade in my 11" as I don't really like it, but I have a magic keyboard for it and I don't want to be stuck with that.

I'm probably misunderstanding what you mean but for the record, the iPad mini 6 has 5G. It works very well with T-Mobile. I usually get over 660 Mbps and theoretically can go up to 3.5 Gbps. It doesn't have the little used 5G ultra-wideband antennas though so maybe that is what you meant.

for those ppl that don't see, i saw it very noticeable if you scroll up then down (and up and down) especially like on apple's tv app. it looks like the right side of the screen moves faster and the left side slowly catches up causing a jiggle / jello appearance..

i initially didn't notice; but after you see it, can't unsee. if you don't think you have it don't look for it. But from these forums, looks like ppl see them in apple store, multiple returns, so it probably affects all of them

also, currently have ipad mini 4 and with same software setup (as restored) and it is definitely in the mini 6... still on the fence, but will probably return it

I mean I can tell it’s blurry when it scrolls, but so is my iPad Pro. I can see the words doubleling in the slow motion version, but I’d much rather see it scrolling slower in real time. I mean does anyone actually try to read the screen when it scrolls that fast?

The problem is not that it's blurry, but that lines become slanted/wavy, which is (a) distracting and (b) can cause motion sickness and/or headaches. Not everyone perceives it that way (obviously), but for those who do it tends to be a deal-breaker.

Yeah, I noticed the jelly effect once while purposely trying to invoke it and taking a slow motion video with my phone. Really isn’t noticeable at all under normal use cases. I do wish it had ProMotion, but that’s my one and only gripe so far. Impeccable little handheld tablet.

Well, of course! Everything that I write here is going to be from my perspective. I do wonder how many of us here ever would’ve noticed if it weren’t for Dieter’s initial tweet, though.

Oh no question I would have...
I'm super irritated by stuff like this though -- and I'm primarily a portrait mode user

Anecdotal reports on MR seem to indicate that NOT every Mini 6 exhibits jelly scrolling.

I've been poring over the threads on this issue and it seems like the effect varies in intensity from unit to unit. Some are alarmingly noticeable, others, barely evident, while still others don't have it at all.

I suspect that part of the perception involves a person's eyesight and sensitivity to that kind of behavior.
Yeah, I just watched my most trusted review channel, TallyHoTech. She did her traditional deep dive into the Mini 6, and said she saw no jelly or tearing, and then showed a closeup of scrolling up and down quickly, and I saw no tearing either. So I would not be shocked if it’s certain models coming out of one factory that are to blame.

I’m getting my 64gb tomorrow, and I’ll be brutally honest with what I find (as well as comparing it to my 2020 12.9 Pro). We shall see…

I tried this on my iPad mini and can’t see the effect. Even recorded the screen using 240 fps Slo-mo on my iPhone and still can’t see it. I’m wondering if only certain units are affected.

I have a 2021 12.9” M1 iPad Pro that I love. Recently got my mini 6 with cellular and it’s been such a revelation using iPadOS with such a small and light form factor. At times it feels like having a large phone that can properly do multitasking, accept pencil input, easily be proped up with Smart Folio, and have a proper width vertical keyboard for thumb typing. I’ve been using mine at work constantly as a moleskin replacement and even for getting on Teams calls and responding to emails (both in the office and out and about using cellular). It’s such an awesome companion device!

I’ve personally learned to not think about an external keyboard and rely on voice input and pen input. iPadOS 15 has on device speech to text recognition which has made a world of difference when it comes to composing text messages, emails, or documents, etc.

The question now becomes, what do I do now… Just going back to the Mini 5 seems boring since I was expecting a new device for a while. One idea is going back to a Samsung Fold as a phone and get the mini replacement together with the phone, and get something like a Galaxy Tab 7+ to replace the iPad Pro 12.9”… Anyone compared the two and have something to say about them, especially the interaction between phone and tablet like text messing from the tablet and so on.
