I hear you OP. I definitely got excited as I've been a fan of the mini for years (though I use a 12.9 Pro as my primary computer), and ordered a mini 256GB asap when it launched. For me it'll complement my 12.9, and really just be for casual use, primarily book reading. I'm in Ontario as well, tax in the 256 was $960 CAD. It is a bit nuts when I think about the casual use it'll receive. And I'm a bit disappointed with how iPadOS 15 looks on this new mini.

There's a refurb 11" Pro that is available from time to time for 649 CAD + tax, as well as the 64GB mini for 649 CAD + tax. I think I'm going to swap my 256GB mini for one of those options (more likely the 64GB mini and save a few hundred $$).

I'm afraid I am returning my iPad mini 6. Here it is on the right against my wife's iPad mini 5. The screen is worse showing at full brightness and True Tone. I tried without True Tone and still the same difference.

So, i purchased a 256Gb Space Grey Wifi iPad Mini 6, well the device is beautiful, form factor/size is perfect, im just completely underwhelmed for paying pretty much $1000CAD for this thing.. Screen is "ok"... cameras are "ok" , Battery life is "ok"..

Honestly if this thing costed $450-$550CAD as is id of probably of been happy with my purchase, but in no way is this thing worth $1000 to me.. I will just wait till a better version comes out or buy one used in a few months when people sell them for a good price.

i really really really wanted to like it and convince myself to keep it but i cant justify the price for the final product received.
You are right to think like that. If you or anyone for that matter purchases an expensive item and when you get it and try it and it does not feel like it's worth the price you paid for it then send it back for a refund.

Thinking about returning the 6 too. Not quite sure yet.
Having a iPhone with a Oled screen and a iPad 12.9 with XDR Display, it Is hard for me to live with Screen quality, specially the black levels of the mini are really bad compared to those devices.

That looks terrible. I agree with your decision to return it. My regular iPad 8th generation has a much nicer display.

Pros are cool but too big for my needs and wants , the mini is the perfect size, just not a fan of the screen and price… after Xmas I’m sure there will be people selling them much cheaper which would be a more justifiable purchase haha

Here in the UK we pay 20% tax (its actually called VAT which stands for Value Added Tax). However, when we buy anything in retail stores (or online) the VAT is automatically included so the price you see is the price you pay. The 64Gb Wi-Fi mini is £479 which is because of the exchange rate of the dollar to the pound. The £479 price does, however, include the VAT …so no surprises with sales tax after your purchase.

Do you have photos without TT on? Or is the bottom one without TT?

I have to say I experience the opposite. Ore maybe I just like the color of my Mini 6 display more. I compared my Mini 6 to my Mini 5 and I can now see what I haven't seen before: a HUGE red tint on my Mini 5. My Mini 6 looks colder and whiter compared. My Mini 5 just seems red now. Never noticed it that extreme before and like the display, now it seems weird. I try to do a photo the next days and post it here. A HUGE difference. Quality seems about the same, contrast, colors etc. Just the major red tint on my Mini 5 is very noticeable.

My major issue is a quite loose power button. And volume buttons a tiny bit loose. But otherwise my Mini 6 seems very good. Not major jelly effect visible to me atm.

No, sorry, both photos are with True Tone on. The 6 was still duller with it off. I'm getting a refund, not playing panel lottery. As people have said, if it was £279, I may have put up with it.

Just an FYI, Apple is giving you good trade in value for the mini 5. I traded mine for $225, making the net cost of the mini 6 $275. For me, that made it worth it. I’m keeping mine and I am enjoying it.

Giving it more consideration since 14.8 killed my battery (hopefully not killed enough for it to fail diagnostic assuming they do them on trade in.) With the reported issues trading in at the same time as getting a 6 seems risky.

Trade in values aren’t quite as good in the UK, on the current exchange rate they are offering $212 for my cellular model.

you should known that is not worth for you, before purchase , is not that the price was a secret until the arrival of the device

Why does everything look smaller on the mini 6?

The mini has been like this from the first iteration. Essentially it was a shrunken down 9.7" iPad, but with the same resolution (initially 768x1024), which meant it had the same pixel resolution as the larger iPad and all the pixels, and more importantly UI elements and touch targets were smaller.

I was hoping myself to see some change here as I'd prefer the UI elements and such to be closer in size to the iPhones and larger iPads. Though I do think with the mini being a pretty niche product a big part of why many people love it is for the information density they get on the small screen.

I have a mini. I’ve had one since the first generation. I’m talking about specifically in the picture posted in this thread of the mini 5 beside the mini 6. Things look a lot smaller on the 6.

Ah, didn’t realize you were referring to 6 vs 5.

The aspect ratio did change so it is both taller and has less width compared to before. Less width in portrait definitely feels noticeable in apps with 2 columns, like in the pics post above of the Settings app. Also I first felt it when using Messages. The right column showing the thread felt oddly small.

Yikes with all these reviews for the mini 6. I love the form factor of the mini and have had almost all iterations of it. Im still waiting for my cellular version but it looks like Apple failed on the QC on these :(

I'm happy with the display, the quality is about the same as the display in my 11" iPad Pro (2020 model) or my wife's iPad Air 4. It doesn't get as bright as the iPad Pro, but it's as bright as the Air 4 and plenty bright for my needs. The pixel density is pretty high. No Pro Motion, but Apple for now is reserving that for their most high-end products.

But your opinion is just as valid as mine, and it's your money. You are 100% right - the posted specs and Apple's promotional materials are no substitute for experiencing the product yourself. If you don't like the display, or for any reason don't think the device is worth what you spent, by all means return it. Apple has never hassled me when I have returned products I bought from them, and they pay return shipping costs. I wish their return window was longer than 14 days.

Sorry it didn't work out for you, but glad you will get your money back to spend on something else.

No offense, but you knew what it was beforehand, the specs were advertised, including how much it cost.

Seeing the specs and all the other information that's available online is not the same as experiencing the product in person, holding it in your hands and using it.

If the OP isn't happy with the product after experiencing it in person, they should definitely exercise their return option.

Why does everything look smaller on the mini 6?
Because of the new screen ratio & the mini is in portrait mode.

In landscape mode everything would look a tad bigger but also have less information on the screen for the same reasons.

The biggest issue with this new Mini is the “jelly scroll” problem which has ruined the experience of using it for me. I’m having to return it which sucks because I love the form factor.

See the thread on Macrumors about it. Also now being covered by 9to5Mac.
