Maybe because I’m used to using a 2021 iMac and a Samsung with an OLED display so this looks lower res in comparison. That’s how it’s possible!!
I agree my 7plus destroys this screen, but so does the
Mini 5. It's brighter and icons are larger no ot fuzzy. Think I'll reinvest the $900 in a surface pro 8

Ok, fired up an old mini running iPadOS 14. I think its a combination of the older aspect ratio plus the change in 15 v 14 that is throwing me off. More so the Home Screen change with 15.

A few comparisons (not the best since each has a different number of icons on the home screen and dock):

The other thing is iPadOS 15 switches to 4 icons across in portrait when you start adding widgets.

Just my opinion, but holding them both in the hand, the iPadOS 14 feel of icons more uniformly filling the Home Screen feels more natural or iPad like. Good thing is its software and I'm sure over time they'll update and tweak it.
When you look at web pages, are the fonts smaller on the iPad mini 6?

In some other screenshot I saw from another guy, the fonts are smaller and it seem like there's more desktop space and more content could be shown. E.g. In the settings page, you can see more options (longer menus) with the iPad mini 6

Is that true on the 6?

That would be "no bueno" for me personally.
Things on the 5 are about as tiny as I can take them right now.

Webpage text and app text (like settings) look identical in size. Which they should given the pixel density is the same. The only difference is the real estate is slighter different as the aspect ratios are different. Settings for example, the right column has more narrow elements, but text size is the same. However more content can be seen vertically while in portrait.

Pic of settings and of a web page for comparison.

Also I should note, for whatever reason compared to my mini 4 in these pics, the mini 6 screen definitely seems warm in colour, and at different angles a bit worse even.

Damn I absolutely hate that. Garbage looking Home Screen IMO

this change for the sake of change thing has to stop

I know. I really don't like it myself. On the larger iPads you don't realize as much as the display is so big. But on a small display, its noticeable having all this dead space around the Home Screen icons.

You can tell it was to aid in the layout of widgets, but they could have done a better job.

It’s like iPhone size grid on a massive surface area

even more wasted space and clutter at the same time

apple is getting comically unwise

Alright guys boots on the ground for science. Gonna bring my mini 5 to a retailer that hopefully has the 6 on display or apple store and do some compare photos

I mean you’re not losing anything. But they should make use of the real estate on the 6 more effectively. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s garbage looking it’s a missed opportunity.

That’s True Tone and night shift off ?

Good call - it was Tru Tone on the 6. Forgot the 4 didn't have it. Even with it off its still slightly warm and even more so when looking at an angle.

Compared to my iPad Pro or iPhone 13 Pro it looks rough. But on its own for how I'll be using it, not a big deal. Do wish though there was a premium / Pro version of the iPad in this size.

Came away not impressed

looked at three units all the same

tint was not a concern (though bright lighting could’ve obfuscated)

1- less bright than my mini 5 three for three
2- dimmer off axis
3- jelly scrolling noticeable on reader mode. Even embedded photos have jelly effect. More looks like being on acid pinching and contorting text and shapes. Not thrilled about it. All three again
4 side note - could cope but the vertical bezel is thicker than the mini5. That too I notice immediately
5 side note - the bezel side by side comparison photo almost picked up the sub pixel arrangement or something in the camera that wasn’t the case as strongly with mini5. May or may not mean anything

all points lead me to believe these are cheaper inferior displays

I may get a new design mini eventually but not this 6th gen

Looks like the Mini 4 has a blue cast to it.

Wow looks like you
are right about the inferior displays. I think I’ll wait for the next iteration of the mini..the money grab by Apple is truly unreal with this particular product.

Your bezel close up photo made me think of how I thought that Mini 5's side bezel would be the overall bezel thickness of the 6. If I owned the 5 I wouldn't have any doubts about waiting for 7. But as I don't have any Mini I'm really struggling with myself over the jelly effect. I really want and need one, so I'm going to have to think long and hard about whether it's going to be a dealbreaker if Apple don't fix it.

if you aren’t directly coming from a mini 5 and you don’t have the same keen eye as people like me it may not matter but that’s in the eye of the beholder, or the wallet holder :p

Have you considered a great condition preowned five?
I’ve seen some incredible deals around me on Facebook and Craigslist

So, i purchased a 256Gb Space Grey Wifi iPad Mini 6, well the device is beautiful, form factor/size is perfect, im just completely underwhelmed for paying pretty much $1000CAD for this thing.. Screen is "ok"... cameras are "ok" , Battery life is "ok"..

Honestly if this thing costed $450-$550CAD as is id of probably of been happy with my purchase, but in no way is this thing worth $1000 to me.. I will just wait till a better version comes out or buy one used in a few months when people sell them for a good price.

i really really really wanted to like it and convince myself to keep it but i cant justify the price for the final product received.
I know what you mean. I spent $1,600 after tax for the iPad Pro 12.9 with 128 storage. Tough pill to swallow, but I think I’d feel worse if I paid $1k for the mini.

At least the iPad Air 4 and iPad Pro 11 look the same to my recollection if you get a good unit notwithstanding 60hz vs promotion

I am disappointed as well. I am going back to the 2018 iPad Pro 11”. 100% agree on the screen, it’s pretty meh. Maybe I got too used to pro-motion without even realizing it.

Not counting the ProMotion, does the 2018 iPad Pro have a better screen than the Mini? Honest question, I'm curious.

Sadly I too am going to return my mini 6. I have purchase most of the ipads since 2012 and this is the first one that doesn't live up to expectations. It's lots of little things that ruin the experience for me. The screen seems worse and less sharp than my mini 5 especially for pdfs. The battery life is shorter by about 1.5 hours compared to the mini 5. Safari is so ugly, the big font in the tabs drives me crazy. I have about a dozen usb c cables and none of them work to charge the mini, they work fine with my ipad pro and my lg laptop so the mini must do something to require you to buy a genuine apple cable. Sadly wifi drops off about once or twice a day (just enough to be irritating). Touch id doesn't work with my light fingerprints so I have to type in the code every time, I have tried reprogramming it several times. I read a lot on my mini and the kindle app looks washed out and is laggy. Most of the cases for the mini 6 have lots of heavy magnets so it winds up heavier with a case (except for the apple case) than the mini 5. I miss the button to exit and kill apps and the white boarder. Lastly in portrait mode it doesn't show the % charge left at a glance, you have to rotate it into landscape in order to find it out if you need to charge it. Maybe the mini 7 will be better and have face id.
God, do I hate FaceID with a passion. It works about 30% of the time for me.
