Well I’ve gone and reordered the mini 5 again. I’ve been regretting returning it, which I did quickly to meet the return deadline via courier while we had public holidays impacting the return time.
Now the Otterbox case exists as well with the features of allowing a Smart Cover and having a pencil holder that is ‘soft’ when not in use, as opposed to the rigid pencil slots in some cases which add extra width to the case. So I’ve ordered the Otterbox case from Apple with a Smart Cover. I’m expecting this to be a nice little portable unit. The case looks to be on the thicker side, but on the plus side, that should add nice protection against any knocks or drops on my iPad that I plan on taking everywhere.

I have the mini 4 and wanted a mini 5. In my area, they are not easy to get if you want wifi + cellular. As a trade-in, I am getting between $110-135 from the stores for my mini 4.

1) For me, a phone is too small for reading ebooks.

2) I spend much time tagging my music, and many of those tags are really long. A larger screen enables me to see them better. Nicer also for viewing my album art scans.

3) Audiobooks often contain a large number of chapters and/or parts. Once again, I can see what is going on better on a larger screen.

4) For radio, it really doesn't make any difference.

Update

I use Cs Music Player for listening to my locally stored music on iPads. I find it great for pretty much everything (inter alia, viewing tags and album art and sorting). From my point of view, at any rate, it is streets of ahead of the default music app in terms of functionality and looks.

I’m thinking of returning my iPod touch 7 for the iPad mini for music. The default player on iOS is much better in the iPad, but Cs Music is better still.

I’m worried that it’s silly to have an iPad mini for music though.

Music player on the iPad is definitely better, added bonus is that Spotify treats the device as a computer and you can play whatever you want instead of having it forced in shuffle mode without a subscription

I love my Mini 5. Had all of them bar the 3 I think.

I travel a lot so find it perfect size for throwing in the bag and using on a plane, I also think it's more resilient in a backpack or getting a bit knocked around when travelling due to it's smaller size, it's less easy to bend if pressure is applied in the middle by something else in your bag. I don't want a massive phone, just XS size as that's all I need for sliding in the pocket and going to the pub. Watching movies on the plane on the Mini I think will be better than a Max phone, and when you get to the other end, your phone isn't flat !

At home the Mini is great to grab for a quick reference or read an article as you can hold it up (or in one hand) without needing a gym membership.

I got the pencil to try out with it, great that it doubles as a notebook - I use OneNote extensively for everything from quick jotting to work/study notes as it's cross platform.

Only slight negative is that when note taking at home the screen is a bit small, so considering a new Air just for the house - so can use the same pencil between both.

Definitely a case of best tool for the job, phone is a phone, Mini is a great travel and quick use tablet, normal iPads for the house.

My mini arrived a few days ago - this is the first mini I've owned. It was more of a replacement to my iPod touch as a dedication music device with a few books + games mixed in since the mini is bigger.

So far I like it and it's absurdly small size. I'm not sure how people use the mini as their main device though because the screen I a bit too small for me. I bumped up the text size and it works for my uses.

I keep my mini because of Microsoft office is free for devices under 10 inch... LOL... It is portable and it is definite good enough to do some office work... This plus a decent battery bank and USB external drive, this will be my traveling entertainment devices. Need this to kill 13 hours in the flight...

The mini 5 is great, albeit a bit larger/taller than my mini 2. Bought the cellular version, and with an Apple Pencil, it’s an awesome digital notebook. The performance is leaps and bounds over my old mini 2. Using the iPad mini is joyful again. :)

Was planning on getting the Mini 5 but didnt bother, I really wish it had the same form factor and Face ID as the Pros do, I’d have 100% purchased it then, even if it cost a bit more

Agreed, but also the lightning port means it's a good replacement for an older mini, but dead money for anyone not already invested in lightning accessories.
