If I were designing a smart-mug, I'd instead put the battery in the coaster, and in fact make that battery user-replaceable and completely optional. Power the coaster from USB-C, and it inductively heats the mug while measuring beverage temperature using an RFID sensor. Thus the mug would be lighter, dishwasher safe, and last far longer. Use a phase-change liner in the mug, and an optional travel lid, and you've got a great setup. Wish someone would make that... ah, but no planned obsolescence.
Dear customer,
Your suggestions have merit, but we're thrilled to announce the upcoming Travel Mug 3 Pro with GLYPH interface, starting as low as $399.

Seeing some mental gymnastics to justify this useless piece of kit.

Want your coffee to stay warm / cold three hours? Buy a double walled cup for it or get a thermos. The amount this thing holds should probably be gone long before it gets cold, unless you’re trying to ration on a mountainside… in which case buy waterproof matches and a collapsing kettle.

For any “use case” there are better options at 1/10 the price.

This thing is absurd - talk about a product solving a question never asked.

I don't want my coffee to stay warm. I want it hot. It stays hot with this, not warm. We have many double walled cup and you are correct they keep coffee warm much longer than anything else, but not hot. Sorry the price is out of your range for this convenience.

congrats, you're one of the 3 people who are willing to buy this thing

This thing needs to go away.

A $200 crap gadget that is inferior in every way to a $20 Contigo travel mug
Let's make a bet. I bet the ember keeps coffee at a hotter temperature than your contigo which by the way we have and doesn't come close.

Well since I have bought 2 so far that means only one. We also own a car that is sold far less than what you drive. I guarantee it is worlds better. Quantity sold is irrelevant

I also own ice cubes that are reusable so that I can have bourbon that is ice cold without dilution. Exponentially higher than water based ice. Don't care. I order from the left side of a menu not the right.

I think I disagree, although it depends what you think the target demographic is.

Many of us here on a technology forum, some with a penchant for gadgetry… absolutely, we should be the target demographic. Especially those of us who can afford to spend $200 on folly, if we choose.

The issue is not that Ember are failing to reach the target demographic. They’re just failing to convince us, if the comments in this thread are anything to go by.

It’s often said in real estate that a house will have a ceiling value, depending on its location. Well, it’s the same with a mug. It doesn’t matter how fantastic they make it, or how many features are crammed in… it’s still a mug. And so are the people that buy it. And I say that as an Apple customer!

That’s why they’re promoting it to Apple customers. If anyone would spend $200 on a mug, it’s Apple customers. Not saying it’s not a great mug. But they’re going for the top end. It’s like the Mac Pro. The target market is people for whom the price is not an issue. That’s pretty much the beginning and end of the market for it, and apparently it’s enough.

I learned something new today. Not only does the MacRumors Bot drinks tea, but it's also well-versed in beverage temperatures.

It's to help people find their mug when they place it on the roof of their vehicle, forget about it, drive off, and it falls to the ground.

I don't worry about that I have Jeep Gladiator, no fear of ever leaving it on my roof!

i used to sell suitcases and people would spend a grand on a carry-on case with a luxury label on the front, just so they could show off to other people about how rich they were. that's basically what this is.

Whew! I've been needing something absurdly expensive to keep my drink hot whilst listening to my $60K Jony Ive turntable.

I received an Ember product as a gift several years ago. The first two chargers failed while under warranty. The next four I paid for. There's a fundamental design flaw in the charging contacts the mug rests on.

As I type this, I'm sipping from a cold $350 coffee mug while waiting on delivery of another charger. I'm also hearing my deceased mother's voice mutter something horribly sarcastic in the back of my head. I'd forgotten what a mean mouth that woman had.

I have an Ember mug and love it.

If you don’t see the appeal, then it’s simply not for you – why can’t it end there?

I find the judgmental attitudes in this thread to be quite childish.

Nobody is wrong for enjoying things you don’t.

I have the mug version of this thing- received as a solar orbit completion present. It’s fine for the 45 minutes or so I spend checking and replying to email at my computer desk first thing in the morning, but if I had spent the $150 or so this thing cost I would be slightly disappointed. Battery is not great. But it does hold my black coffee at exactly the same temperature while it lasts.

I don't want my coffee hot. I want it warm. Contigo wins again

SO you decided to comment on a thread where people want their coffee hot on a product that does so and say it isn't worth it because you want your coffee not hot. Whew
