Pretty positive we will see some hardware upgrade. Admittedly, the CPU is still pretty good, but that might get a bump(all those snapdragons might force Apple's hand)

Also things like camera, screen resolution, GPU are big.

Although I'll say, the smartphone world seems to be slowing down as far as big jumps go. WebOS, Android, iPhone OS were all HUGE upgrades over the past few years. Hopefully Symbian and WM can impress us!

I don't care about the software on the next iphone... i want them to improve the damn battery life..

Wait a second....are you saying a new Iphone is coming out!!!!??!?!?!?

Of course a new iPhone is coming out. Apple is going to release atleast one model every year. Most likely it will be this summer but nobody knows at this point.

OS 4.0 will probably be announced in a few more days. We'll probably see the hardware in June. Till then, I would suggest holding off.

How was the 3G to the 3GS a HUGE upgrade? Some speed bump, a compass, voice control and 7.2HSDPA (Which still can't be used in the US). The compass and voice control are novel at best. The speed bump will be nothing when we go from a 1 core CPU to a dual core CPU (which is most likely going to happen this refresh with the new ARM chips).

3G -> 3GS was a small bump at best. Which is exactly why they kept the same name! Apple knew it wasn't deserved of the 4G name.

The change from the first iPhone to the iPhone 3G was even smaller than the 3G -> 3GS. The only real difference between 1 and 2 is the inclusion of the 3G chip. The 3GS got a massive update faster processor, better graphics, better camera, ect.

So nothing new until june eh..

I was waiting for wednesday aswell. If nothing new until summer ill just get a 3Gs with a 12 month contract.

Well, they had already lost out on the Christmas market but still managed to get 50,000 pre-orders despite the phone already being out on O2 and Orange, so it seems there are a lot of people with some brand loyalty to Vodafone. If Vodafone had known a new iPhone was coming out at the beginning of February it seems they had little to lose from waiting. Plus, if they knew a new iPhone was coming, it wouldn't have made sense to do all the staff training, get all the ad campaigns going etc, for one model when it would all have to be done again less than a month later.

who said there is a new iPhone in Feb? what is so hard to understand that Apple for the last 3 years release the iPhone in June? There are only RUMOURS that theres going to be an early release and unless it's apple direct saying early release then it is simply just that....a RUMOUR probably made up by someone who wants an early release

only thing iphone releated this coming week will be the announcemen of OS 4.0 and maybe a sneak peek at the new iphone.... unless they do another conference thingy closer to june

You are joking, right?

When the 3G came out it was like buying a new computer with the same exact processor/memory specs as your year-old computer, except that the tower looks newer and it has a better wireless card.

Why would they call it the 4G? It's not the fourth iPhone model and it's not on fourth generation wireless networks.

Yes, and this fact was acknowledged by Apple in their numbering of the models. The iPhone 3G was 1,2 -- reflecting the fact that it was a minor refresh of the first model 1,1; the iPhone 3GS is model number 2,1.

I predict that the next model will be 2,2 and will have basically the same hardware as the 3GS.

Only like this for those that bought the first iPhone. ;)

Um, it is the fourth iPhone model.

  1. Original Edge iPhone
  2. iPhone 3G
  3. iPhone 3GS
  4. Upcoming model = 4G

Storage capacity bumps don't count as new models.

Eso was responding to beamer8912, who said of the 3GS "3G -> 3GS was a small bump at best. Which is exactly why they kept the same name! Apple knew it wasn't deserved of the 4G name." The 3GS, as you demonstrated, was not the 4th iPhone.

First off, the 3G got the most wanted feature of all, GPS.

What are you suppose to do with that faster processor? Load the message app 3 seconds quicker?

The 3GS is faster no doubt, but because the 3G accounted for a large part of the iPhone market all of the apps still had to be compatible with the 3G. Thus not much was done with the 3GS's speed. Hence, nothing really came of it.

When the 4G comes out most 3G owners will go from 3G to 4G so developers will begin to use the faster speed. But at that point, the 4G will have more features and an even faster processor (dual core....woot!).

So riddle me this, is the 3GS better only because it can load a webpage a few seconds faster?

EDGE to 3G was more than a few seconds, and GPS......well that speaks for itself.;)

You don't know that for sure. Maybe they will wait until AT&T can perfect a 4G network before they release another iPhone, who knows? I'm not saying they won't, I'm just saying nothing is for sure

I myself didn't think that the 3gs offered all that much over my 3g, so didn't even think of upgrading until I started to running out of space and running out of ram while multitasking. I took advantage of a 3gs for sale on craigslist. Honestly, besides the storage space and ram, I've found the 3gs to be a much bigger upgrade than I expected. The speed bump is significant, the camera is actually pretty darn good (better in many ways than the droid, I've found, fir example), and the ability to auto focus and do macro is huge. I take pictures of documents right in to evernote all the time. The compass is genuinely useful (try coming out of a subway stop onto an unknown corner in a strange city - the compass helps a lot!). Can't say I use the voice control much, but I never used it on previous phones either. The new screen coating is nice too.

Sure, I'm looking forward to the next gen (primarily for a better screen and hopefully, native multitasking, but in the meantime I'm glad to have upgraded.

Traditionally, the iPhone's next OS is not previewed till early March, but if the Tablet contains a bigger scale iPhone OS with new features, then I could see them showing off the next iPhone OS on Wednesday. Who knows what it will contain, but I've heard multitasking is one of them. I also hope they put some sort of notification system in place so you don't have to leave apps to see what happened. Sometimes if I miss a push notification, it disappears.

Lets see faster processor means I can play intensive games at a normal speed, I don't have to wait for any app to load it just starts, and there is no lag whatsoever.

Seriously are you living under a rock or something? Your arguments are horrible. Everything about the 3GS is faster.

And you can play the exact same games on the 3G. No rocks, just some common sense. ;)

So I ask again how is being able to load the message app 3 seconds faster, better than the addition of 3G signal and GPS?

Right but the games preform better on the 3GS than on the 3G.

GPS also works faster on the 3GS due to the faster processor and more ram. You're telling me you'd rather wait 3 seconds for the Messages app to load when it can instantly load on the 3GS? Multiple upgrades is far more significant than 2 little additions.

The addition of 3G chip and GPS is nothing compared to a spec bump.
