Right but the games preform better on the 3GS than on the 3G.

GPS also works faster on the 3GS due to the faster processor and more ram. You're telling me you'd rather wait 3 seconds for the Messages app to load when it can instantly load on the 3GS? Multiple upgrades is far more significant than 2 little additions.

The addition of 3G chip and GPS is nothing compared to a spec bump.

Have you ever tried loading a page with EDGE? The difference between EDGE and 3G is lot more than 3 seconds.

That's great that they perform better, I would hope they would. But that doesn't change the situation. It would be like getting an HDTV without any of the content. Sure the picture looks a bit better than an SDTV, but it's still 480i content. Until you get the HD channels, a blu-ray player and a HD video game system your expensive upgrade is rather useless.

Right now there's no market for 3GS only apps. It's only been out 7-8 months and a very large portion of the iPhones out there are 2G or 3G. If a dev makes a 3GS only app it cuts their consumer base in half (at least).

Once the 4G comes out, most 3G owners will upgrade to the newest hardware and devs can improve their app quality. Albeit, they'll be better on the 4G.

You see the flaw in your logic, right?

I wasn't arguing 3G apps I was simply arguing which phone had a more significant upgrade. Sure there may not be a lot of "3GS only apps" but that doesn't matter because the 3G apps work on the 3GS and a lot better at that.

I don't get how my opinion on which phone had the better upgrade is flawed.

It's simple the 3GS is the better phone it includes 3G updates + all the spec bumps.

Just agree to disagree.

1. You can be CERTAIN that there will be a new hardware version of the iPhone this year (most likely summer as in the past). Yearly updates of the hardware are critical to driving contract renewals for Apple's partners (ie. AT&T) and for Apple to keep iPhone users upgrading ($$$$) and locked into the platform ($$$$) and not tempted to look at alternatives such as Android or WebOS.

2. It has already been nearly confirmed that Apple locked up 5 megapixel camera units for this years iPhone (they need to, every other smartphone has moved this far already) with a likely LED flash.

3. I believe that a OLED higher resolution screen is a near certainty with 6 month lead time for developers to ensure their programs are ready (iPhone OS 4.0 will be previewed today and will be part of the tablet) and that processor and memory bumps to support multitasking in OS 4.0 are also very, very likely.

4. I bet only the 3GS and "4G" will support the true multitasking due to processor limitations in the iPhone 3G. The 3G might run OS 4.0 but only a subset and the original iPhone is likely to not run OS 4.0 at all.

So what are the odds the iPhone 4G will feature an Apple-designed custom ARM chip related to the A4 in the iPad?

About 90% I think. They have their own mobile processors, they're already using them, so why not on the iPhone? Frankly, I don't see a single reason why the iPhone won't feature a custom ARM chip.

And they already have a version of the iPhone OS compiled to run on their new chip on the iPad, I think the next iPhone will have the proprietary chip

How likely are the rumors that the next iphone will be clocked at 2ghz? Considering that the new ipad is only 1ghz the rumors seem to be overzealous. There are blogs online which suggest that there will be a 1.5ghz dual-core Snapdragon processoer by the END of 2010, so is there really a possibility the new iphone will have a 2ghz dual-core processor in a phone??

agreed. the only reason i can think of why this wouldn't happen this year is that Apple/PA Semi didn't have enough resources to make a second processor along with the A4. they might need more time. i don't expect that this is the case though, and we'll see an Ax in the next iPhone

Dont buy, the iPad release with OS 3.2 COULD justify buying a 3GS, but I still have some faith in apple to completely rework the iphone OS this summer.

No. There is no possibility. A 2.0 GHz processor would absolutely kill the battery life. I really doubt we will see even 1 GHz, but that would be the absolute highest I could see them going (and it seems more likely now that we know Apple is making a proprietary 1GHz sys-on-chip). Personally, I think this summer's iPhone will have a slight restyling, a 5MP camera, and a radio app. Other than that, I expect it to be pretty much identical to the 3GS.
