Well its never happened to me. But then all phones have faults - Look at the iphone 5 and its scratches out of the box and also the bending. Dont try and make out the Galaxy S3 is the only phone to have certain issues.

I'd like to know what "well documented" means to you, because I'm on XDA and Android Central multiple times a day, everyday, and I've NEVER seen this issue raised.

Further, I've had my S3 since early July of last year. I've had multiple other phones that I've switched between (at the same time), which means removing and reinstalling the back panel on my S3...sometimes 3 or 4 times a day. I've yet to see a scratch or crack.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be nice to have more "premium" materials, but the plastic body of the S3 has been great for me.

I kind of like the plastic too since I always use a phone naked. It makes me care less when I lay in on a table or put it in a cup holder. The iphone 5 I had to baby b.c of the material.

So we're cherry picking, huh?

Amazing how I've NEVER seen this mentioned, but you're able to state it's a widespread issue. Like someone said before, let's not even talk about the issues the iPhone 5 has had (and I own one, so save your breath if you're thinking of calling me an Android fanboy).

As someone above me stated, every phone has issues. If you don't like the plastic build of the S3, that's your prerogative. I don't care for the tiny screen on the 5, or the dings out of the box, or Apple's maps solution. But I do like how the 5 is built. That being said, while I'd love to have more premium materials in the S4, it's not a requirement. The plastic build of the S3 doesn't bother me, for one, because I use a case on all my phones. So who care what's it's built of?

Android is great. So is iOS. The S3 is an amazing piece of work. So is the iPhone 5. You want to really see a circle-jerk of an operating system? Check out a WP8 phone (I've got a Lumia 920 that's up for sale right now). Amazing build quality, the camera is much-improved since the Portico update, but man, you get bored with the OS an hour after you boot it. Ugh. It's more limited than iOS and the apps are just ugly as a whole. I'm ready to be rid of that thing.

Even worse than glass, they will use the same old plastic that scratches up. No doubt about it. For once, I wish Samsung would give the customers materials worth the money they are paying.

It is absurd you pay $200 for plastic that cost $30 tops while HTC can give you aluminum that feels and costs more for the same price.

 Two things:

1.Get a case which i always do anyways

2.You can buy back battery replacement covers cheap if it gets scratched up if you dont use a case.

I dont see the advantage of an aluminum body if im putting a case on it anywas. Especially with a aluminum body. It is very slippery. And aluminum is cheap a well. Maybe costs $40 to make instead of $30. Big deal!

HTC are all non removable backs so no thanks for me. I have a Class 10, 32GB MicroSD card that is going to be put in from my GS3. Pop it in, music and Vids instantly installed.

And if i want an aluminum back, i can do it instantly with this that i have:

I use this one 90% of the time because the aluminum one doesnt allow NFC to work. Tjis one has leather on the back of it.

Cherry picking? Those are the first few links if you search Galaxy S3 "cracked back" on GOOGLE.

What is it going to be now? There must be some conspiracy theory where Google is purposely putting these atop the search results to show problems with one of the vendors of their very own Android OS!

I use every phone I own naked. Cases add too much bulk.
The point is, you shouldn't have to spend extra money to get a back cover that is aluminum or higher quality.

And I stopped replacing my S3 back cover after it scratched up for the second time. $10 each time is too rich for my blood.

Dude together they cost $10  and i wanted to get them because i CAN change them out.

I dont think a snap on case adds much bulk. Now i do have a Otterbox as well for it but dont use it much because that one does add too much bulk. I use a case for some protection for falls and scratches and as a better grip. It is too slippery with the aluminum back on it but i dont really need it with the leather one as far as grip.

I dont know what you do with your phones but i havent got many scratches on my cover to care.

Out of curiosity, what features of WP8 would you miss? I ask because I have a Lumia 920 (that I've got up for sale at the moment) and it's been the opposite experience for me with Android/iOS vs. WP8. I feel like I can do so much more on my S3 or jailbroken iPhone 5 than on the Lumia.

I'm genuinely curious.

I use each of three platforms regularly, and I think they all have their strengths. I really love the live tiles- once you take a few minutes to set everything up I find that interface to be the most efficient. WP8 has it's flaws for sure- anything that you don't pin is going to get lousy notifications, the volume control is universal instead of separate in each app, and there is no quick toggles for wifi/bluetooth (just like iOS). But I really like WP8 a lot, and the 920 is my ride right now. Battery life is the best I've ever had on a mobile phone, and I think that is mostly because I spend less time opening apps due to the nature of the tiles.

The glass on an iPhone 4/4S were easily replaced. 2 screwed and you just pull off the back.
And they cost a few "pounds".

And have you not seen the S3 backcovers cracking issue? It is well documented.

No visible scratches on my S3 8 months into use without casing. I bet the iphone5 would be in a much worst condition in 1 month (not 8) without a casing.

Opposite case in my usage. The S3 had scratches galore and the silver bezel dented with chips. The iPhone 5 looks fine and 9/10 condition.

Well again, i dont know what you do with your devices but it is hard to believe your GS3 had that much damage but your iPhone is just fine when everybody else has said the back scratches so easily...lol.

Maybe the Apple logo on it blinds you to any imperfections of the entire phone.

I have one small dent on my bezel but that is it. Had it since July 1st.

Either you severely tortured the S3 but handle your iphone like a baby OR you never have the S3 at all. I tend to believe the latter.

Even this screen scratch test (near end of video), the Iphone5 aluminium fringe was totally scratched whereas S3 plastic fringe suffered minimal damage.

Actually not true. You can actually replace the HTC One X back housing/casing, I've done it (changing black to white) and looking at the parts for the HTC One I suspect it will be just the same to swap the silver / black housing around.

back on topic. Is the release date actually 3/14? Everything I am reading sounds like it will be released on the 14th and they will also be holding a conference that same day.

is it weird that I am more excited for this than an apple launch b.c we have seen zero leaks of the actual phone?

Meh, they haven't leaked anything unlike Apple.

With Apple's last press conference I was like....I.ALREADY.$$$%%%ING. KNOW!

This phone is dead on arrival. They are going to use Snapdragon 600 in the US when the 800 is coming out in 2 months.
