I respect your opinion, but to me saying "aside from optimization and less bloat" is like saying "yeah, that car is fine, except it has cement tires".

Touchwiz is far from fine.
Touchwiz is far from perfect, but same goes for iOS. Neither are amazing or terrible

Wrong. Touchwiz makes something good (Android) worse. iOS is good. Android is good. Touchwiz is garbage.
In your opinion sure in mine iOS is something that I do not miss. Do I love touchwiz? No but does it ruin the Android experience? Nope not at all.

There is no right and wrong only opinions.

How dare you present a balanced and dynamic view, which actually can make discussion constructive rather than force it into the dead-end alley of purely ego-centrical reasoning????!!??!

Reported.

Maybe samsung should stop spending so much money on bashing the iPhone (free advertising for apple) and focus on making a few quality handsets.

Ask yourself this. If every Android phone was running stock Android which phone would you actually buy? While I don't like touchwiz (or any skin jobs for that matter) if you don't offer something unique as a phone manufacturer you will have zero brand loyalty. All you have left is hardware and anyone can make a phone with similar hardware specs for half the cost.
So the way I see if you don't want skin jobs buy a Nexus or Moto X and stop complaining. Both those phones are over $200 cheaper than a Note 4 and runs fast as hell. I could go from my Note 3 to a Moto X with no regrets but I would rather get a Note 4 because of the Gear VR. But I could also go with a Droid Turbo. That's the beauty of Android.

Let's also keep in mind plenty of people still carry s4 and s3s today as well so people may not be upgrading as usual.

Also it's hard to different Android, how would Samsung go about that? I think they done enough, their own app store fitness apps, they try hard to pretty it up, try hard to be different from all the other android makers. Outside of maybe a iTunes equal and a easier backup method for noobs I don't know what they can do at all.

With the older models still selling and Samsung using android I think they need to cut back big time. Lose the alpha and all that stuff bring out the 6 and nite and kill the rest.

I have no doubt Samsung wastes hundreds of millions in materials, R&D, labor and QC on low volume devices.

If they cleaned up their product portfolio it would probably save millions.

I suspect Samsung is getting high on their own supply and propping up their chips and components arm by supplying their mobile division.

Internal allocations in turn makes their parts division look better when doing investor reporting.

Samsung should have 3 phones, the Phaplat, a mid size, and a bargain size. It seems that they announce a new phone every 3 weeks. Clean up the line, stop going after Apple and focus on the hardware. That is the one thing they can't compete against. Apple has the great hardware. I think HTC has better hardware but they don't have the Samsung marketing.

I agree with that, I think Samsung should offer the S line and the Note series :) the mini s should do for low end and forget the variants.

They should do the same with the watches, sport model like the gear fit and the regular watch.

Of course I want to see what they do with tizen.

Market "spoofing" is also a strategy to flood competitors' products into a vast portfolio of yours. It has a cost but could make sense in a not mature market context.
Something we miss in our reasoning is that samsung is an Asian brand that also targets asian markets where mid and bargain segments are core. Would you address such diverse geographies and segments with only 2 phones ?
AAPL positionning is much easier as it is premium, full stop.

No...their phones don't bend......the updates do not brick their new phones.
They don't bail out on their new business partners leaving them to file for bankruptcy. Like they did to GT Advanced......then withheld hundreds of millions of dollars that might have helped.

Why would I cross shop a Moto X and Nexus 5 with a Note 4?

I don't understand why you think the "something unique as a phone manufacturer you have to offer" has to be a subpar skin. What would make these phones different would be specific features which are implemented on an app level.

If you're into S-Beam, great, but why does that require a substandard user interface? If Samsung wants to come up with some proprietary widgets or something without gumming up the interface, I would be into that, too. I think some of the Samsung weather widgets are great. No, Samsung has to turn Android into something bad with a poor lock screen, a poor home screen, and non-standard menus. It's unnecessary and generally worse quality overall.

no not the bending issue again is is false..

I predict i can bend a Samsung phone exactly the same way as the Apple one..which by the way, we didn't see the guys face as he was doing this..

i bet it was bright red. and then say "see, its breaks."

well, no kidding, he was using "force"

Stop offering small / normal sized phones and go only BIG ?

I believe apple still sells a 5s don't they? And is 4.7 not normal now?

I've never run across an iPhone bricking. If needed, a restore can be done with a full system image backup. And I'm not sure u wanna discuss business ethics with samsung.

The IOS 8.01 OTA bricked 40,000 iphones. They had to be connect by cable to a Mac to restore them. That is a brick.......takes OTA phones is non functional until hooked up to a computer. What if you are at work? No iTunes? Its blocked at my work.......3 guys on my team had their phones inoperable.
Business ethics.......Apple. Apple withheld 150 million from GT Advanced they were contractually obligated to pay....because they knew...GT was filling for bankruptcy...insider info? Isn't GT an Apple funded and run company? Didn't the CEO sell all of his shares right before they filed for bankruptcy? Collusion? All this because Apple did not include Sapphire screens in the IP6. They told GT to retool all their manufacturing...stop selling to anyone else except us.....we got this....then pulled the rug..... Its all here on MR.

U and I define bricked differently then. I never said apple was some moral compass but u assume samsung doesn't do unethical things. U and I both know samsung would love to be in apples position in mobile. Samsung lost what 60 percent compared to last year? If that was apple all the androids would be declaring apple is over

Never have I assumed that......EVERYONE would love to be in Apples position as far as profitability....
