For me, the only real downside is the battery. The 2300mAh on my HTC One (M7) barely gets me through a day, there is no way the Alpha's 1800mAh battery will do it.

Spouse complains about M7 battery once in a while. Why are they make it smaller than M7 battery. Did they even try copying iPhone battery specs? Samsung making decent progress in terms of designs with rumored Note 4, S5 and making baby step towards metal phones with alpha.

Oh let's hope not. While I would much rather see HTC or LG on top to see what they could do as the lead dog, I hope we don't ever see the same dominance from another Android OEM as we've seen from Samsung. It's just not good for the platform when one OEM has a stranglehold on the market share - especially an OEM with poor software and inefficient hardware.

Or maybe you mean it's not good for Apple to face an equal competitor #

Hasn't seemed to matter much....the iPhone continues to be the best selling smartphone on the planet.

But really Apple is inconsequential as a marketshare player. They'll never gain more (or come close to) the 20% they held a few years ago - that was their high point and they won't reach it or exceed it unless they compete in the low-end market.

No, I'm talking about Android here. Companies like HTC made Android what it is today - Samsung simply jumped in and poured huge amounts of money into marketing their versions of the stuff they knew about the iPhone being in the supply chain.

Now that the marketing dollars are fading and Apple is pushing them out, their starting to decline. Which is GOOD for HTC. And LG, Sony, Huawei, and the countless other Android OEMs who make great products but had been overshadowed by the Samsung marketing machine.

Well said! And I would say those OEMs you mentioned not only make great products but make far superior products than Samsung in my opinion let alone their software as well.

Definitely looks better than my S5.

I've read awesome things about the LG G3. And if my experience with the HTC One M7 is any indication, the M8 is a great phone as well.

Sense is my favorite Android skin by far. And HTC hardware is unmatched on the Android side.

Maybe they didn't want to give it high end specs because they already have the SGS5 and Note 4 for that. Having three high end flagships in one year would be crazy and they would end up eating sales from each other.

People would stop buying the SGS5 if the Alpha were the same but thinner and with metal.

Overall it's an interesting phone IMO, but that price... not worth it.
Bingo that's the thinking i reckon.

I could see myself owning and using one of these if I had the money (which I don't). I'm in the "a smartphone should be a phone first" crowd.

My currrent personal smartphone is a Galaxy S4 which I purchased used. In my opinion, the S4 is the max you can go in a smartphone size without becoming a phablet. The Galaxy S5 is just too big in my opinion. I'm glad to see that Samsung is finally bringing the size back down.

With all that said, I don't think that this phone is going to help Samsung gain/recapture market share. It really does look like Samsung's attempt to release an iPhone 6 clone before the official iPhone 6 release.

If you want a phone that looks like an iPhone 6, then you really should just wait and purchase an iPhone 6.

For me, the one thing that puts Samsung ahead of the others is the removable battery. I think HTC makes a better phone. But I want a removable battery. I want to keep my phone on the charger at night and I want to put a new battery in it every six months.

Samsung can't even get right the choice of colors for their phones... Man, the blue and gold just look awful to me.

If Samsung thinks they'll get people who want the iPhone 6 to buy the Galaxy Alpha, then it needs to have at least the same specs as the Galaxy S5.

I'd always pick the Galaxy S5 if I had to choose between the Galaxy Alpha and the Galaxy S5. That metal around it is meaningless if everything else on it is worse.

Valid point. All looks and no substance. Blue doesn't look that bad BTW.

1. Octacore processor, I mean two quad cores (one is faster). The process switches depend on needs.
2. Smaller screen size (4.7inch).
3. Amoled display. (consumes less power)
4. 720p

I read some where that Alpha could play video for 11 hours without charging.

This Octacore processor suppose to be on 20nm soc. But US version comes with S801 which is same as S5 with bigger battery. I guess, in order to make it thin they scarified battery.

I think it is a decent phone in both looks and on the spec sheet - plenty enough for typical users.

I don't think this is aimed at the more hardcore geeks like us but more to offer an option to people who might be ending contracts / thinking of switching manufacturers and wanting a more iPhone-like size and appearance. Thin is usually a good first impression and differentiator so with all of that, I understand why they've made it.

Surely they've been getting feedback out phones getting too big and lacking a more premium (metal) feel. This phone looks to serve consumers who appreciate appearance and feel rather than specs and battery life. I've no idea if Samsung are losing many / any customers but this gives them another angle, especially with the iPhone 6 about to be the big talking point. At least now they can say 'wait a moment, have you seen this...'.

Slightly unimportant but what happened with the promo group shot? Looks a total mess!

Find a new phone designer

I've got nothing against Samsung. I had a S3 and S4. Decent phones, but not great. If they think the Alpha will "kill" the iphone 6 they just don't get it. The Iphone 6 will swat this like a mosquito.
