Grumpymom how are you finding the iPad mini 5?

I’ve ordered one to pick up on Monday to replace my iPad mini 4.

I would have to see it in real life to know if it would bother me or not. It would have to be quite bad though. I’m quite tolerant of many things.

It’s a $2000 phone. You deserve better than to have to “tolerate” your $2000 phone.

It's a first gen product of new technology. Only a million units are being made and sold. It's not a mass market product. It will have flaws. Most people should understand that if they are buying such a cutting edge device. If you aren't ready to put up with flaws then don't buy it.

Enjoy your tech IMO If you have hang-ups or financial issues on what the Fold delivers then as you note don't buy it

Personally I think its a remarkable and refreshing step away from the slabs we use currently

Where others seem overly obsessed with some 2nd hand details they totally fail to see the enjoyment others are willing to be part of what these new devices bring

These forums are littered with commentary of flaws on so called mature devices yet many are still shelling out $2000 or more on static old formats

Sure many cautions users want the 2nd or 3rd gen but lets not knock the early adopters who make it happen

They royally messed this up. This almost worse than the backwards stylus disaster.

Samsung does amazing work but man they really screw up big when they do.

Here’s noted Android enthusiast Dieter Bohn telling you why you shouldn’t buy the Fold(read: because it is trash). Good idea, abysmal execution

Yikes. They have it a 4. I can already see the “iVerge” comments coming on Reddit and other Android forums. Sigh.

I don't get this thing about telling everyone not to buy it. It's not a mass market product. Not everyone can buy it because Samsung aren't making enough. So yes most people shouldn't buy it but Samsung aren't asking for everyone to buy it or even a lot of people. That's not what this is about. When reviewers make this big statement about telling people not to buy I think they are giving people the impression that this thing is readily available on the shelves for anyone who wants one to buy it. It's not. It's in limited supply. It can't be sold in the millions of units.

Not read that review and I'm not sure if a ranking is applicable for such as new category but in his video review he didn't say the thing was trash at all. He said it wasn't ready for mass adoption but he said a lot of positive things about it and said that he saw a future for it if Samsung could iron out some of the issues.

Come on man. Put a video on. One side of the screen trails the other side badly when scrolling.

I feel for you. Samsung let you down.

You sound so concerned, but rest assured, your concern for me or any other consumer is unwarranted. On the other hand, If you're pinching pennies, then I understand the concern you're projecting in this thread. Not everyone is a customer for bleeding edge premium luxury tech like this. For now, this is strictly an elitist device. End of day, don't be concerned about other people's spending. You go ahead and buy whatever makes you happy, and the rest of the world will do the same.

I read the review even to the point I thought I would highlight his negativity vs the positive but he was so conflicted most of the time the only consistent thing was he lead with the negative before countering with a positive  which if you read from a negative view point in the first instance may suit your preference :D

Of course based on just 2 units with faults he's overly cautious IMO and his other niggles he notes are based on early software

He quite rightly points out that it's flawed to draw simplistic comparisons to other devices and even himself found he usage or expected usage started to evolve in to a different pattern and so nullifying many of the trivial observations we have seen, especially on the front screen

Sure it's quite right not to recommend this for the masses but that's really a statement of the obvious given it's price point, however given whats in the box (Phone, buds, case, charger and insurance) it's no different to the equivalent sized 512GB IPhone  that suits the more cautious Apple user.

Personally I could not of hoped for more and will try this new experience. I find the quirks and issues some perceive far less of a problem then the dulled experience and entrapment of some eco's buy in or out

I can't wait for the updated or revised editions of the Fold. I know this is a first generation product. I know it will have issues and problems.
I can't wait for the day when I can carry one device around that can fold out to a tablet and replace my iPad and cell phone and desktop computer! What I love about the Samsung offering is Dex.....Dex changes everything. Being able to hook it up to a monitor(s) keyboard and mouse is a game changer!

Dex is so underrated it’s crazy. I can’t wait to have it all in one device. I already spend 98% of my time on my phone even though I have tablets and a laptop. One device is just more personal and convenient.

It is the one thing that separates the Samsung Fold from anything else. Being able to hook up to monitors and keyboard and mouse is exciting for me. I can't wait to carry one device for all my needs. Having everything on one device is a game changer!

I think this is the category most people will fall into, which is, being very interested and waiting on the second gen version. Who knows, maybe they add SPen support. Shame on people that hope Samsung fail because of tribalism. And shame on the people that disingenuously blew the screen issues way out of proportion. I'm glad to see there are tech enthusiast who see the bigger picture as to what Samsung and the Fold represent. It's all about taking that necessary first step to move the industry into the future. And when a company is willing to take that risk, I got nothing but respect. Any tech reveiwer, like that WSJ reveiwer, that looks at the fold as something to shoot down and make fun of, is no tech enthusiast at all. This video is the proper way to review a new device. Show actual use case scenarios.

You can 'unlike' you know.
I get that... If you don't like something then you don't like it...pretty straightforward. But continuously putting something down that you don't like and have no plans to but it not helpful.
No one here is saying to go out and but this product. We all see and accept it's shortcomings. But also see a bigger picture than just this first generation product.

If Samsung had listened to all the naysayers....there would never have been a Galaxy Note line as we know it.

EDIT: Sorry @michael9891 ...I totally mis-read your reply! My bad...

No problem!

While I'm here, I definitely have no interest in buying the Fold myself (love my iPad 12.9 and we're a long way from foldables replacing that and my phone). But I'm still interested to see how it develops (along with other foldables) over the next 2/3 years.

I personally think the doom and gloom over a few dodgy ones (2 user error) has been blown way out of proportion. It's great these products now actually exist and it's better to judge once the public owns them. They're never going to be perfect, especially not a first gen brand new product.

Well, since I'm moving, my funds are tied up. However, even with the problems that have come up, and then, having the funds, I would like to get one.

Next year's model will be mine! Hopefully, it has an s pen. But, if not, I'm still game.

Samsung just needs to keep working on it and it will be great. Can't wait.

I think you will like the Mini 5. It’s basically what the Mini 4 was like when it was new and running the OS and apps of its day. So it’s just updated with a bit more oomph for today but not really distinguishable from the 4. Of course I won’t know more until the kids use it for FaceTime with friends and can tell me if that experience is improved in any way.

We all like the display. It’s not massively different but True Tone is nice. And one of the kids enjoys sketching on it.

They will be getting one of their own when the budget permits.

It’s a welcome boring upgrade. Sometimes you actually want an upgrade to be boring. This is truly a case of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Apple did what they needed and nothing more. Thank goodness! Wish they would do the same with the SE.
