“I’m rooting for folding phones to get really good”

This is the message people should take in.

It’s a shame so many YouTube content creators’ comments feeds are ruined by peanuts who just want companies - which they have no vested interest in - to fail. The tribalism toward Android/Apple is so primitive & contagious that it pollutes forums, social media etc. & turns it into an unnecessary ‘fight club’.

Fair enough if it’s good banter (of which I’m a fan :D), but if you read the comments on YouTube, it’s hardly ever that...I mostly watch the video & move on...to avoid the pretty sad set of vindictive comments - like a pile of dominos falling over - as you read the many discussion feeds around, when you’d prefer to see fellow techies discuss things properly...

It’s mainly young kids who aren’t capable of respecting others though...

Unbox therapy did a decent video for once
Ouch! Not a fan? :D

I saw that one (from his alt channel?). Another good one. ;)

I thought it was quite decent for a change. He wasn’t shouting, wasn’t pulling silly faces in the thumbnail and there was no click Bait title.

There are devices on their 10th iteration and are still with faults according to some

However I don't think I referred to faults just to knee jerk/clickbait reaction of device failure :D
4 devices out of a larger number, 2 of which was because of the film being removed. So 2 genuine failures and that’s it. The whole product line is a complete write off, pile of trash.

1 of the 2 for concerns was a mysterious lump under the screen yet still working

I am a big edge panel user so my concern is how this has changed on the fold and my usage

I also see no one seems to mention how long the endurance would be if you never or seldom unfold. The smaller outer screen under some scenarios would probably last days given the battery size

Great if you can resist unfolding when away from power sources say on a trip

I'm not referring to the video creators. I think they're doing a good job.

The responses by the riff raff public on the other hand...

I'm not concerned in the least. I like this video, it gives good perspective. Full steam ahead.

Was just coming here to post this.

Hopefully we find out what Samsung discover is the issue with Dieters unit.

Interesting part in this video is when they talk about the lady who dropped her Fold review unit on concrete and it was perfectly fine, means the device is pretty durable which is no easy feat considering what it is.

I still want to get one. If Samsung does a crazy promotion later in the year I will trade up from my s10+. I would say once it hits $14-1500 it's game on.

Definitely going to get insurance on it though
I didn’t think they will make enough. I would have been interested in getting one later on in the year as I’m just so compelled. However I think they will be in short supply.

I’m going to be starting a new job much closer to home (no more 4 hour commutes). They offer a very generous bonus for joining the company which will more than pay for the fold. Of course I could have bought one outright but it seems a bit extravagant. Using some of my welcome bonus would allow me to buy it without feeling guilty. However I feel they will just be in limited supply.

It could just be a manufacturing defect on his unit and perhaps something was under screen out of the box. It happens to like when people say they bought an iPad/iPhone and it has dust under the screen.

Congratulations on the new job and the improved commute! I wish you all the best!

I traded in my old mini 4 for a new mini 5 yesterday. While I’m quite happy with the mini 5 and actually very relieved it has not changed in any inconvenient ways, I do look forward to a robust foldable someday. I think the hinge on the Fold looks very cool. I don’t mind a slight crease. And the weird notch doesn’t bother me.

But now that we know there is such a delicate layer on the display, I can see why they couldn’t give it S-Pen compatibility. And that’s a shame.

I am glad to finally have Apple Pencil usable on the iPad mini. I have to sign a lot of documents for school almost every week. It’s so convenient to be able to use a pencil or stylus for these tasks. I do believe someday, Samsung is going to make this possible with their foldables.

I think Samsung has debuted a promising device here. I know they’re going to keep refining it and take it to the next level year after year.

I think the fact that they make their forward momentum visible, warts and all, is very important in a time when Google said outright a couple of years ago and Apple implies via secrecy and slow incremental improvements, that smartphone hardware had advanced as far as it was possible to take it and the small slab was as good as it was ever going to get. I don’t really think Apple believes that, but Google reps said that upon debuting the Pixel 2. They’re primarily a software company so they’re coming at it with limited imagination for the hardware.

Huawei and Samsung are trying to break down the barriers in a very visible way and this is very welcome. I don’t know what Apple is doing inside the secrecy of their labs but I hope they’re converging on more versatile device form factors as well.

Congrats on the new job! Hope all goes well for you! Can't imagine a 4 hour commute! I complain about my 25 minute commute! :)

People can explain this off all they want, but the Fold is a PR nightmare and isn't going to recover from this. The only people that were buying this were tech saavy people for the most part...the exact people that watch review videos. I'll be shocked if this doesnt lead to a lot of pre-order cancellations.

The biggest issue with the review failures are the film causing display failures. If it was easy enough for reviewers to peel up like a screen protector, than its going to peel over time 100%. Even if it doesn't peel all the way, you're going to have bubbles of half-peeled film on the screen of your $2000 device? That's ridiculous.

Oh and regarding the Samsung/Apple comparison with regards to the Fold...why? It doesnt always have to be Apple vs Android in every tech discussion. But since it was brought up, lets not pretend like Apple would bring something this half baked to customers. And lets also not pretend like Apple is innovative at all anymore. They let other companies act as their beta testers, wait until a good product is out there, copy it and add a level of Apple polish which they're very good at, and then market it as something brand new. Its what they been doing for 5+ years and it works very well.

I'm kinda expecting a promo like a free S10 when you buy the Fold :D I mean they did threw a free TV for the Galaxy Note 9 in some markets.

Edit: deleted...old draft that was unnecessary on my part..beating a dead horse. ;)

A positive review despite the issues

Yeah, I wouldn’t exactly call it positive. Dieter admitted his enjoyment (felt more like amazement) when using the device but that was inspite of numerous issues and concerns. The tone was basically ‘it’s a really cool device but not ready for the everyday consumer because of so many concerns—primarily surrounding reliability, durability and cost’.

The screen motion issue alone would drive me nuts after seeing it..one of those things you’ll notice every time after seeing it once.

Looking at the Apple Watch and Airpods, I’d say Apple is innovative. I think all of these companies have become innovative, but differ by degrees. Samsung innovates in a very visible, flashy noticeable way. Huawei has arrived to that point as well. LG and HTC also innovate, but just can’t make a profit at it.

But you’re right, this isn’t a Samsung vs. Apple/Others thing. Nor even a Samsung AND Apple/Others thing.

The spotlight right now is on Samsung. This shouldn’t be a PR nightmare, but there are too many clickbait journalists and You Tubers spinning it that way and so this particular model may not recover in the eyes of the general public and among the buyers who are easily influenced by the media.

There’s a real reason these people who write these reviews and have these channels are called “influencers.” The people who preordered to be on a cool bandwagon are going to run scared in the face of the negative news and go with something more tried and true.

But if Samsung has anyone with a lick of sense on their staff, they will reach out to the people who preordered and appeal to their pioneering spirit with a campaign to recruit these people to help them perfect the product. They will attempt to sell them on their vision of the future and make them feel a part of it.

I read something about there being a limited release with an almost concierge type level of service around these devices. So it’s possible they are going in that direction. $2000 is not a bad price of admission to that world. I used to be a part of something similar for Sony AIBO for a small bit of time when we had some income and hadn’t yet become parents. Lol, kids change everything!

I’d happily do it now for Samsung, but the timing is off, because next year we switch to a private school with a strong college prep program that costs as much as we will have to pay for university tuitions in a few years. I still get to indulge my hobby but I have to be more strategic. ;)

If not for the family considerations, yeah I would be on board, but I would want a direct line to someone at Samsung who would take my observations and suggestions.

Samsung could still potentially have people like me on the hook, but who don’t have kids in school! So that’s one way I think they could salvage the situation. Appeal to the ego. It’s a great motivator! :)

Samsung could really mitigate this by saying everyone who buys it gets a unconditional 2 year warranty. With a replacement in the mail if it breaks.

Smartwatch and wireless earbuds innovative? Seems more like examples of what I was talking about. They saw existing products, added a level of Apple polish, hiked the price, and marketed them as innovative .
