I keep seeing people praising the upcoming iPhones for being able to adjust the amount of bokeh on the portrait photos. But can't the Note 9 already do that (and the Note 8)? At least on the rear cameras?

Yes, that's been a thing. Austin Evans mentioned it in his video yesterday, and Dieter Bohn mentioned it on today's episode of Vergecast. I reckon because iPhone has it now, it's revolutionary.

I believe so. iPhone can do it as well using 3rd party software. Think the Note 8/9 do it natively
The apple version emulates the blades in the lens from what I could tell.
That's a nice touch, kudos to Apple if that's true.

It's pretty interesting how Apple now has a phablet sized device at $750, or a tad bit cheaper than the Note 9. If the Average Jane/Joe can get passed the screen resolution and type differences, then that could mean Samsung might have to be more aggressive with the S9+ pricing to undercut the iPhone XR.

Though, the corner cutting is laughable at times because some Android OEMs don't need to corner cut as much. Head phone jacks, OLED screens, FP sensors, fast charging out of the box isn't just priced for the flagship $800-$1000 devices.

Im not sure the average consumer cares about this stuff. My wife is the definition of your average iPhone buyer. Wants/prefers the iPhone because it’s easy and has a good camera, she uses the dongle to connect regular headphones and just doesn’t care about anything else. I think that’s the profile for most people. I think the Xr is gonna sell a ton even though the galaxy devices offer much more for not much more $.

The lens emulation is a nice touch and looks more organic than Samsung's one but you it's been a feature in 3rd party apps too - Focos is the most popular - you can change literally anything in the photo - from the focused object, to bokeh shape and lens looks (has some popular lens)

With how little the Average Joe/Jane care about resolutions, they can get passed the size and material difference without even actively knowing about it.

For me, I am starting to simplify my phone experience. I want something that works well, will have 3 years or so of longevity, is cohesive, offers a great camera, and there is plenty of customer support.

I know Apple isn't the most cutting edge software provider or the most cost effective OEM. However, I like that their phones work well. They aren't saints either. But I think iOS 12 is the step in the right direction to make a lean software version with performance as key.

I can't wait to try the XR myself.

A bigger iPod with calling capability is not really a response. The thing with iPhone is while the hardware is improving but it's still held back by the shackles of iOS.
It appears a nerve of yours has been hit..& it's made you jump up in a defensive manner causing you to ignore much of what I said.

The Note & iPhone are both very capable devices for work.

No need to suggest one is made for simple people just for disagreeing with another POV.

Gonna be a tough call whether to choose the note 9, or Xs max (stupid name) as my next phone. I was tempted to pre order, but I think I want to hold it in my hand first. Kinda hard to get stoked for the note 9, since I already have a note8. I must say though I really have no complaints besides battery life. I know the note 9 addresses that so I may just go for that.

No need to pre-order right away necessarily. It's just a race to beta test a new product if anything. Try both out since they're substantial and costly investments.

I am thinking about getting the XR right now, but it may change my mind and encourage me to get the iPhone X instead.

I am finally convinced that Samsung does not really want people to switch to the Note 9. If they did, they would have had all color options available in the US and they would have the 512 GB phone readily available. I have had every iPhone and this was the year I would have considered the Note 9. Looks like an iPhone Xs Max is in my future in about three hours!

Reading some articles, it appears the iPhone Xs/Max dual sim will be supported on at&t. Thos makes it really tempting to consolidate my 2 phones. However I will have to see how well that's implemented, if it's like the Note 9 where it allows you to have dual accounts for the same app, that could be something I would look into. This would be a no brainer if apple actually updated springboard, added multi window, and had a built in apple pencil. They could own the market if they did that.

Why can't all phones be praised for introducing new features to their market?

Do you want one brand to have all the features & hence stagnate the competition?

Some people want to feel justified in their purchase. You will see a LOT of oneplus 6 owners posting how they’re happy they have their 6 because it has a headphone jack. If the 6t hadn’t removed it, they would start second guessing their purchase.

They also instituted a new policy this year that made it really unpleasant for two or more people living under the same roof to preorder if the preorder also involves processing a trade in phone.

I preordered a few days before my husband. I got a ship date for next week, so it still would not have gotten here before an iPhone.

I also specified a trade in of my S8+.

My husband made a similar preorder with trade a few days later. They put a hold on his preorder, saying they would not process it until MY transaction was fully completed. :mad:Meaning not until after I ship my phone in and they approve the trade for the agreed on amount. What the what? Yeah, they have a new one trade transaction per household at a time. They didn’t have that last year.

Well given that I wasn’t going to ship my phone to them until I was darned sure all was good with the Note 9, my poor husband would have been waiting until middle of next month for his Note 9.

We like to get our phones together if possible or close to it. That right there sucked some of the wind out of my sails. Then as luck would have it, I happened to be on vacation when all that was going on. On vacation, I tend to use my Android phones exclusively. I was reminded how excellent my S9+ is and it would be a waste to retire it so soon. Then I thought of how much more money I could save waiting until the end of the Note 9 life cycle. So I canceled my preorder.

Now thanks to my husband and I being groggy and miscommunicating, I have the XS Max, instead of the smaller XS, coming to me next week. If I get along well with it,I probably will just hold on and wait for Note 10 now, because I want the stainless steel gold Apple Watch and that’s going to cost a bit. Fortunately I can trade in my series 3 watch and get a bit of a break but it’s still going to cost.

I’m still groggy so goodness only knows what I’m going to think once I get some coffee in me.

My husband is canceling his Note 9 preorder, too. He decided he is going to do the same as I am.

Apple didn't lie per se, but they did what they always do, they blurred the lines of the truth. Apple's new camera is using segmentation mapping to adjust the bokeh dynamically in different areas of the picture, adjusting bokeh differently in the foreground and background. That's not something we've seen from anyone else yet. It's really the public driving the narrative that adjustable bokeh hasn't been seen before period. Which is not accurate, but I'm guessing that narrative is coming mostly from folks who haven't used one of the recent Galaxy devices, or just assume Apple will do it better than anyone else.
